What is MBBS? It's Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, a 5.5-year NMC-regulated degree. Eligibility, admission steps, fees & career paths explained.

MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, a 5.5-year undergraduate degree (4.5 years of academic study plus a mandatory 1-year internship) regulated by India's National Medical Commission under the Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2019. It's the entry qualification for practicing medicine and the first step for any Indian student aiming to become a doctor, in India or abroad.
This guide answers what is MBBS in full: meaning, eligibility, admission process, curriculum, fees, and what the degree actually opens up career-wise, in India and at our partner universities across the EU.
Key Takeaways
MBBS = Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery, a 5.5-year degree (4.5 years academic + 1-year internship) recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Admission in India runs entirely through NEET-UG; for 2026, roughly 20 lakh candidates appeared and 11.21 lakh+ qualified nationwide, per neet.nta.nic.in.
India has 1,40,664 MBBS seats across 839 medical colleges for 2026-27 (447 government, 392 private), per the NMC's official seat matrix. AIIMS and other national institutes are counted separately.
MBBS graduates can practice as general physicians, pursue postgraduate specialization (MD/MS), or write licensing exams like FMGE or NExT to practice after a foreign degree.
Studying MBBS at one of our 9 partner EU countries is a recognized alternative when Indian seats run short, provided the university and course are NMC-compliant.
What Is MBBS? Full Form and Meaning
MBBS is short for Medicinae Baccalaureus, Baccalaureus Chirurgiae, or Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. It's a single combined undergraduate degree, not two separate ones, awarded after completing a structured program of pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical training plus a supervised internship.
To fully answer what is MBBS in practice: unlike some countries where medicine is a graduate-entry degree, India (like the UK and much of the Commonwealth) treats MBBS as a direct undergraduate pathway straight after Class 12. A person holding an MBBS from an NMC-compliant institution is legally qualified to register as a medical practitioner in India once their internship and license formalities are complete.

What Is MBBS Eligibility Criteria?
To sit NEET-UG and enroll in MBBS, a candidate needs Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English, at least 50% aggregate in PCB (40% for OBC/SC/ST, 45% for PwD), and a minimum age of 17 on or before 31 December of the admission year. There's no upper age limit under current NMC guidelines.
NRI, OCI, and foreign-national applicants can also apply, provided their qualifying exam is recognized as equivalent to Indian 10+2 by the Association of Indian Universities. Students planning MBBS at one of our EU partner universities generally follow the same PCB and age criteria, though some universities add their own entrance test or English-proficiency check.

What Is MBBS Admission Process in India?

What Can You Do After MBBS?
Once you know what is MBBS on paper, the real question is where it takes you. The degree qualifies you to register as a general medical practitioner, but most graduates go on to specialize. Common postgraduate routes include Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Radiology, and Psychiatry, entered via NEET-PG or INI-CET. Graduates from foreign MBBS programs must clear the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) before registering to practice in India. The June 2026 session had a pass rate of only about 12.8%, per NBEMS data.
For deeper NEET-UG preparation, our sister platform NEETsheet offers structured test series and mock exams built specifically for Indian aspirants.
