MBBS how many years does it take, exactly? MBBS is a 5.5-year undergraduate medical degree in India: 4.5 years of academic study across pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical phases, plus a mandatory 1-year internship, regulated by the National Medical Commission under its Competency-Based Medical Education framework. Most of our EU partner universities follow a similar 5-6 year structure.
This guide breaks the MBBS how many years question down phase by phase, plus eligibility, admission, fees, and what the timeline looks like if you study MBBS abroad instead of in India.
Key Takeaways
MBBS how many years: 5.5 years in India — 4.5 years academic + 1-year compulsory internship, per NMC's Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2019.
Admission runs entirely through NEET-UG; for 2026, roughly 11.21 lakh candidates qualified out of nearly 20 lakh who appeared, per neet.nta.nic.in.
India had 1,36,939 MBBS seats across 823 colleges for 2026-27, per the NMC's official seat matrix — 441 government, 382 private.
At our 9 EU partner countries, MBBS typically takes 5-6 years, with the internship structured differently by country.
Graduates of foreign MBBS programs must clear the FMGE (18.61% pass rate, June 2025 cycle) or NEXT before practicing in India.
MBBS How Many Years: Year-by-Year Breakdown
The 5.5-year MBBS timeline in India splits into four phases under the NMC's CBME curriculum: one pre-clinical year, a para-clinical stretch, roughly two clinical years, and a final year of full-time internship. Each phase builds directly on the last, so subjects can't be skipped or reordered.
Year 1 — Pre-clinical phase: Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry, plus an early clinical exposure module.
Year 2 — Para-clinical phase: Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine, alongside continued clinical postings.
Years 3-4.5 — Clinical phase: Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Orthopedics, Psychiatry, ENT, and Ophthalmology, taught through ward rounds and case-based learning.
Final year — Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship: 12 months of full-time, supervised rotations through every major hospital department before a license to practice.

What Is MBBS Eligibility Beyond Just Age and Marks?
Candidates need Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English, a minimum 50% aggregate in PCB (40% for OBC/SC/ST, 45% for PwD), and to be at least 17 on or before 31 December of the admission year. A 2024 NMC update also permits students who took Mathematics as an additional subject to appear for NEET-UG.
There's no upper age limit under current NMC rules, and NRI, OCI, and foreign-national applicants can apply provided their qualifying exam is recognized as equivalent to Indian 10+2.

How Does MBBS Admission Actually Work in India?
Getting an MBBS seat means clearing NEET-UG first, then working through a structured counselling process — there's no direct-admission route at any recognized medical college in India.
Appear for NEET-UG, conducted by the National Testing Agency.
Check your All India Rank once NTA declares results.
Register for MCC counselling (15% All India Quota) and/or your state counselling body (85% State Quota).
Participate in seat-allotment rounds based on rank, category, and college preference.
Report to the allotted college with your NEET scorecard, admit card, mark sheets, and category certificate to confirm the seat.
Does MBBS Abroad Take a Different Number of Years?
MBBS at most universities abroad, including our EU partner countries, takes 5-6 years, close to the Indian timeline but with internship handled differently by country — some integrate clinical training into the final academic years, others require a separate post-graduation internship. Indian students choosing MBBS abroad still need a qualifying NEET-UG score to register as a doctor back in India afterward.
futureMBBS currently places students only at 22 partner universities across our 9 EU countries: Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, and Romania, all listed on the World Directory of Medical Schools. What Happens After the MBBS Years Are Done?
Once the 5.5 years (or 5-6 years abroad) are complete, graduates can register as general practitioners or pursue postgraduate specialization via NEET-PG or INI-CET — MD, MS, or diploma courses running another 2-3 years. Graduates from foreign medical schools must additionally clear the FMGE, which had an 18.61% pass rate in the June 2025 cycle, per NBEMS.
