Key Takeaways

What is Brokenshire College School of Medicine?

Brokenshire College School of Medicine is one of the schools of Brokenshire College, Inc. The college is a non-stock, non-profit educational corporation owned by the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, usually shortened to UCCP (Brokenshire College about page). Families often search for it as "MBBS in the Philippines", but the degree it teaches is a Doctor of Medicine, or MD.

The college shares a 14-hectare site on Madapo Hills, Davao City, with Brokenshire Integrated Health Ministries, Inc., which runs the church's hospital work. Both are named after Dr Herbert Cecil Brokenshire, an American surgeon who took charge of the Davao Mission Hospital in 1926 (Brokenshire College history page). For the wider country picture, see our MBBS in the Philippines country guide.

Does the Brokenshire College School of Medicine MD meet NMC rules?

NMC, the National Medical Commission, is India's medical regulator. Its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 decide who can work as a doctor in India after studying abroad. They apply to students who joined a foreign course after 18 November 2021 (NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 (PDF)).

NMC rule

What it means for a Brokenshire College School of Medicine student

Course of at least 54 months

The medical degree course must last at least four and a half years

12-month internship in the same foreign institution

The internship must be done at the school that awards the degree

Teaching in English

The whole degree must be taught in English

Licence to practise in the country of study, at par with citizens

The graduate must be able to register as a doctor in the Philippines on the same terms as a Filipino doctor

FMGE, then a 12-month supervised internship in India

FMGE is the licensing exam for foreign graduates. The Indian internship follows it

Whole course completed within 10 years

Counted from the date of joining the course

This is the part of the decision that matters most. The Brokenshire College School of Medicine curriculum is four years, which is 48 months. The bachelor's degree before it is a separate programme. A family should get the school to state in writing how its MD, internship and Philippine licence route meet each line of the table above before paying any fees.

For how these rules apply to your own start date, see our guide on which NMC rules apply to you and our explainer on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition. The current NMC documents are listed on the NMC rules and regulations page.

FMGE, the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, is run by NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences. Every Philippine-trained Indian graduate must pass it before the internship in India (NBEMS FMGE exam page). NBEMS publishes results by country and by school.
