Victoria University of Barbados MD: NMC Rules Check 2026

Victoria University of Barbados is a private medical school in Warrens, St. Michael, that offers a US-style MD. For an Indian student, the key fact is simple. Its MD, as the university describes it, does not match NMC's foreign graduate rules on course length, internship or where clinical training happens. It is also absent from CAAM-HP's register.

What is Victoria University of Barbados?

Victoria University of Barbados School of Medicine is a private school in Warrens, St. Michael. Its WDOMS entry records that the school was set up in 2017 and began teaching in 2019. WDOMS is the World Directory of Medical Schools. A listing there means the school exists and has reported its details. It is not an accreditation.

The school teaches in English and awards an MD. It markets a curriculum built around the USMLE, the United States licensing exam (university MD programme page). Most of its admissions contacts on the university website are Indian phone numbers, so the school clearly recruits from India.

How the Victoria University of Barbados MD programme is structured

The university describes two tracks. A Class 12 science student joins the 5-year track. A student who already holds a degree in medical sciences joins the 4-year track and skips the pre-medical year.

The university's MD programme page says students graduate at the end of the two clinical years. It does not describe a separate 12-month internship after the degree. Its clinical rotations page says rotations can take place in Barbados, with options in Asia, Africa, the USA and Canada.

Does the Victoria University of Barbados MD meet NMC rules?

An Indian who studies medicine abroad needs a licence from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to work in India. The rules are in the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 (FMGL). They apply to every student who started abroad after November 2021. Here is how the programme, as the university describes it, compares.

Course length of 54 months

Regulation 4(a)(i) of the FMGL asks for a course of at least 54 months, so four and a half years. The pre-medical year at Victoria University of Barbados covers school-level physics, chemistry and biology. The medical part that follows is four years, or 48 months. Even counting all five years, there is still no 12-month internship on top.

The 12-month internship at the same institution

Regulation 4(a)(ii) asks for a 12-month internship at the same foreign institution, on top of the course. Schedule I lists the subjects it must cover, from general medicine to obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics. After that, the graduate does another 12 months of supervised internship in India. A degree that ends after clinical rotations, with no internship year, does not meet this rule.

Clinical rotations in Nepal and other countries

This is the rule that catches families out. Schedule I, clause 2(iii) of the FMGL says the entire course, training and internship must be done at the same institution. No part may be done in India or in any country other than the one that awards the degree.

The university's Nepal rotations page invites students to do clinical rotations at Manmohan Memorial Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu after the basic sciences years. The same page mentions hospitals in New Jersey, Chicago, Washington DC, Michigan, Florida and Maryland. Clinical years spent in Nepal or the USA would be training outside Barbados, which the NMC rule does not allow.

Licence to practise in Barbados

Regulation 4(b) also asks that the graduate is registered, or eligible for a licence, with the medical regulator of the country that awards the degree. The licence must be on a par with what that country's own citizens receive. The university website does not show that its graduates can be licensed in Barbados.

Is Victoria University of Barbados accredited by CAAM-HP?

No. CAAM-HP, the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions, is the regional accreditor recognised by the governments of member states, Barbados among them. Its Assessed Programs register lists every school it has assessed. Victoria University of Barbados is not on it.

Is Victoria University of Barbados registered in Barbados?

The Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC) is the government body that registers and accredits higher education providers on the island. Its registered providers list names Bridgetown International University and Ross University School of Medicine Barbados as registered for the MD degree. Its accredited providers list names the American University of Barbados (2024 to 2031) and The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus. Victoria University of Barbados is on neither list.

What does "recognised by MCI" mean for Victoria University of Barbados?

The university's website and its 2022 brochure say it is recognised by the Medical Council of India. The Medical Council of India (MCI) was replaced by the NMC in September 2020. It no longer exists.

The NMC does not approve foreign schools either. Its information desk for students going abroad states that it does not endorse any list of foreign medical institutions. A degree counts in India only if the student meets every FMGL condition and then clears FMGE or NExT.

Victoria University of Barbados graduates and the FMGE

FMGE, the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination, is the screening test a foreign graduate passes before working in India. NBEMS publishes results by country and by institution on its FMGE page. No row for Victoria University of Barbados appears in the 2023, 2024 or 2025 reports. These are the Barbados rows for 2025.

Who can apply to Victoria University of Barbados?

The university's 2022 brochure sets these conditions for the 5-year track.

• Age. At least 17 by 31 December of the year of admission.

• Class 12. At least 50 per cent overall, with English, physics, chemistry and biology.

• NEET UG. Indian students must qualify NEET UG. This is also an NMC requirement for anyone studying medicine abroad since May 2018, and the result stays valid for three years (NMC information desk).

• English. Students from non-English-speaking countries show proof of English, such as TOEFL or IELTS. Indian students with English-medium schooling are exempt.

Meeting the school's entry conditions does not mean the degree will meet NMC rules. The two are separate tests.

How admission to Victoria University of Barbados works

The 2022 brochure describes these steps.

1. Submit the application form online with a non-refundable US$ 100 application fee (approximately Rs. 9,600, September 2026).

2. Upload mark sheets and certificates, a signed personal statement and two letters of recommendation.

3. Receive a provisional acceptance letter if the application is approved.

4. Send proof of funds: a sponsor's letter and three months of the sponsor's bank statements showing a balance of US$ 5,250 for the student visa.

5. Pay the first-year tuition fee. The fee structure and bank details are sent to admitted students.

Questions to put to Victoria University of Barbados before paying any fee

Each question below maps to a clause of the FMGL. Ask for the answers in writing, on university letterhead.

• How many months is the medical course itself? NMC asks for at least 54 months, not counting a pre-medical year of school-level science.

• Where and when is the 12-month internship? It must be at Victoria University of Barbados itself, in addition to the course.

• Will every clinical rotation happen in Barbados? Training in Nepal, the USA or any other country breaks the same-country rule.

• Can graduates get a full licence to practise in Barbados? NMC asks for a licence on a par with Barbados citizens.

• What is the school's CAAM-HP status? The register currently shows no entry for the school.

Alternatives to Victoria University of Barbados

Conclusion: is Victoria University of Barbados right for Indian students?

On the evidence available in September 2026, no. Victoria University of Barbados describes a 48-month medical course with no separate internship year and offers clinical training in Nepal and the USA. Each of these conflicts with a specific clause of NMC's 2021 rules.

The school is also missing from the CAAM-HP register, from the Barbados Accreditation Council lists and from every NBEMS FMGE table since 2023. A family that wants a degree valid in India should choose a programme that meets every FMGL clause on paper before any fee is paid.
