MBBS in Barbados for Indian Students: 2026 Guide

MBBS in Barbados is offered by one school: The University of the West Indies (UWI) at Cave Hill, which runs a five-year MBBS. The island's other medical schools award a US-style MD. For an Indian student, the deciding test is whether the course meets NMC's 2021 rules for foreign graduates.

Which medical schools in Barbados are accredited?

Two official lists matter. CAAM-HP, the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions, accredits medical programmes across the region. The Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC) is the government body that registers and accredits colleges on the island.

MBBS vs MD in Barbados: what is the difference?

The MBBS at UWI Cave Hill follows the Commonwealth model. Students join after school and study for five years on one campus system. Graduates then do 12 months of supervised work before full registration in the English-speaking Caribbean, according to the UWI faculty handbook.

The MD schools follow the US model. Bridgetown International University and Ross University are registered with BAC for pre-medical and MD programmes (BAC registered providers). These schools prepare students for the USMLE, the United States medical licensing exam. A student aiming for the UK sits PLAB, the General Medical Council's licensing test. MBBS in Barbados fees at UWI Cave Hill

UWI Cave Hill publishes fees for international students in US dollars. These are the 2025 to 2026 rates from the UWI Cave Hill financial information for international students (PDF). Rupee figures use about Rs. 96 to USD 1 (September 2026).

Tuition alone comes to about USD 197,200 over five years. Registration fees are paid before each year starts and are not refunded. Living costs, flights, insurance and the student visa are extra. UWI quotes USD 1 as BDS 2.

Who is eligible for MBBS in Barbados at UWI?

The UWI Faculty of Medical Sciences handbook (PDF) sets these entry conditions for the MBBS.

• Age. At least 18 years old by 30 December of the year of entry.

• School subjects. Advanced passes in biology and chemistry plus one more subject, usually physics or maths. Other qualifications are judged as equivalents from official transcripts.

• NEET UG. An Indian citizen must also qualify NEET UG. The result stays valid for three years (NMC information desk).

How to apply for MBBS in Barbados

1. Qualify NEET UG. Keep the scorecard, since it is your eligibility for a medical degree abroad.

2. Apply to the Campus Registrar at UWI Cave Hill by the end of the second week of January (UWI MBBS page).

3. Accept the offer and pay the registration fees before the academic year starts. These fees are not refunded.

4. Apply for a Barbados student visa before you travel (Barbados Immigration Department).

Barbados student visa for Indian medical students

A student must hold a student visa before entering Barbados. An adult applicant sends these documents to the Barbados Immigration Department.

• Form H-1. Completed by the school and certified by the Ministry of Education.

• Form H-2. Completed by the student.

• Identity. Original or notarised birth certificate, two passport photos and a copy of the passport bio page.

• Money. Proof of funds for fees, living and medical costs, such as bank statements or a sponsor's letter with proof of the sponsor's means.

• Police certificate. A certificate of character from every country you lived in for six months or more in the last three years.

• Course papers. The acceptance letter, the timetable and course outline, and proof of accommodation.

• Fee. BDS 300, about USD 150 (around Rs. 14,400).

A provisional visa of up to four months is decided within 10 working days. A full student visa runs for three years and is decided within 60 working days. At renewal, the student shows that all school fees are paid.

Is MBBS in Barbados valid in India?

The NMC, India's National Medical Commission, does not approve or endorse any foreign medical school (NMC information desk). Instead, the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 (PDF) set conditions that every course must meet. They apply to students who began abroad after November 2021.

NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, publishes FMGE results by country and by school on its FMGE page. These are the Barbados rows for the two 2025 exams.

It passed 17 of 29 in 2024, 58.62 per cent (NBEMS FMGE 2024), and 12 of 28 in 2023, 42.86 per cent (NBEMS FMGE 2023). • Cost. Five years of UWI tuition comes to about Rs. 1.89 crore before living costs.

• One MBBS seat pool. UWI is the only MBBS, and its entry is competitive for regional and international applicants alike.

• Clinical years abroad at MD schools. Rotations outside Barbados conflict with NMC's same-country rule.

• Small FMGE record. Only 53 Barbados graduates sat FMGE in the two 2025 exams.
