History

Introduction

CNMC, Kolkata

Calcutta National Medical College is one of Kolkata's older government medical colleges. In its present form, it dates to 1948, but its roots go further back to the Calcutta Medical Institute (1907) and the National Medical Institute (1921). That history still matters because the college has not grown as a recent peripheral campus. It has grown inside Kolkata's older medical and academic ecosystem.

  • MBBS Entrance Exam:NEET-UG
  • MBBS FeesApprox. ₹40,000 for the full course
  • Eligibility Criteria:10+2 with PCB/Biotech & English + NEET-UG
  • MBBS SeatsApprox. 250

For MBBS students, the main draw is the clinical base. An official unit-wise bed-distribution document on the college website lists 1,470 beds and an average daily OPD of about 4,150. That gives the college the kind of case volume that keeps bedside exposure strong across medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, emergency care, and major referral specialties.

Academic Excellence

Why Is Calcutta National Medical College a Great Option for MBBS?

CNMC pairs a long institutional lineage with a substantial 1,470-bed hospital, a wide academic spread, a large public-seat base, a central Kolkata location, and an active student and alumni culture.

A Long Institutional Lineage

The college in its present form dates to 1948, but its roots go further back through the Calcutta Medical Institute, founded in 1907, and the National Medical Institute, founded in 1921. That gives Calcutta National Medical College a longer institutional lineage than many later government medical colleges.

A Substantial Hospital Base

The hospital base is substantial, with around 1,470 beds and an average daily OPD of around 4,150. That scale matters for MBBS because it supports regular clinical exposure across wards, outpatient departments, and routine casework.

A Wide Academic Spread

The academic spread is also wide. Along with the full pre-clinical and para-clinical base, the college covers major clinical disciplines such as general medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, anaesthesiology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, psychiatry, radiotherapy, cardiology, CTVS, neurosurgery, urology, and paediatric surgery.

A Large Public-Seat Base

For MBBS admissions, the 2025 counselling cycle reflected a large public-seat base at the college, with around 208 state-quota seats and 38 AIQ seats. This is one reason CNMC remains a prominent option in West Bengal government medical admissions.

Central Kolkata Location

The college is located at 32 Gorachand Road, Beniapukur, in central Kolkata. That gives it a more connected city-based setting rather than an isolated campus location.

Active Student & Alumni Culture

Student and alumni culture is active and visible. The college has a presence across cultural activities, sports, social initiatives, academic affairs, results, and awards. Its 73rd reunion in 2025 also saw participation from over 2,500 doctors, along with nearly 1,000 present students.

Dr. Arnab Ghosh — MBBS 2018

CNMC gives you a busy 1,470-bed hospital right in central Kolkata, so the case exposure across medicine, surgery and the referral specialties is strong from early on.

  • World-class clinical training

Dr. Riya Sen — MBBS 2019
