History
Introduction
Calcutta National Medical College is one of Kolkata's older government medical colleges. In its present form, it dates to 1948, but its roots go further back to the Calcutta Medical Institute (1907) and the National Medical Institute (1921). That history still matters because the college has not grown as a recent peripheral campus. It has grown inside Kolkata's older medical and academic ecosystem.
For MBBS students, the main draw is the clinical base. An official unit-wise bed-distribution document on the college website lists 1,470 beds and an average daily OPD of about 4,150. That gives the college the kind of case volume that keeps bedside exposure strong across medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, emergency care, and major referral specialties.

History
Calcutta National Medical College in its present form dates to 1948. It emerged from the amalgamation of the National Medical Institute (1921) and the Calcutta Medical Institute (1907) at 32 Gorachand Road.
The college and hospital have been under the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal since 1967.
The founder principal was Dr. Sundari Mohan Das. That early foundation gave the college a distinct position in Kolkata's medical history.
It did not begin as a post-independence greenfield government college. It carried forward an already established nationalist-era and city-based medical tradition into the current CNMC structure.

Scholarship & Financial
Although CNMC is a government medical college and therefore already more affordable than most private MBBS options, students still have a few major scholarship routes available.
West Bengal's SVMCM is one of the main state-level scholarship routes for meritorious students with financial need. It remains one of the most relevant state scholarship portals for higher-education students in West Bengal.
The official OASIS portal handles scholarship applications for SC, ST and OBC students in West Bengal. For eligible CNMC students from these categories, this is one of the main state portals to track.
Students can also check eligible central scholarship schemes through the National Scholarship Portal. NSP currently uses One Time Registration (OTR) for applications.
Students should track the relevant portal based on the scholarship they are applying for.
SVMCM and OASIS cover key West Bengal state routes, while NSP covers central-scheme applications.
Before applying, students should check the category rules, income limits, renewal conditions, document list, and deadline for the specific scheme.
