NEET PG 2024 postponed: Key Takeaways
NEET PG 2024 was postponed on the night of 22 June 2024, the day before the exam, by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, as stated in the Ministry of Health press release of 22 June 2024.
The ministry gave one reason: recent allegations about the integrity of certain competitive exams, mainly NEET UG 2024. It wanted a thorough check of the NEET PG process first.
NBEMS announced the new date on 5 July 2024. NEET PG 2024 was then held on 11 August 2024 in two shifts, at 416 centres in 170 cities.
The result came out on 23 August 2024. Scorecards followed on or after 30 August 2024.
The qualifying percentile was later lowered twice, on 6 January 2025 and 25 February 2025, so that more candidates could join counselling.
Why was NEET PG 2024 postponed?
NEET PG 2024 was postponed because the government wanted to test how secure the exam process was before going ahead. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare press release of 22 June 2024 said this was done in light of recent allegations about the integrity of certain competitive exams. It called the step a precautionary measure.
The ministry did not say the NEET PG paper had leaked. It said a fresh date would be notified at the earliest. It also expressed regret for the inconvenience and said the decision was taken in the best interests of students and to keep the exam process clean.
The allegations it pointed to were mainly about NEET UG 2024. NEET UG is the undergraduate entrance exam for MBBS, run by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It was held on 5 May 2024 on paper. The same night, the Ministry of Education handed the NEET UG 2024 irregularities to the CBI, the Central Bureau of Investigation, for a full inquiry.

What did the Ministry of Health say when NEET PG 2024 was postponed?
The ministry's statement was short. It made three points.
Reason: recent allegations about the integrity of certain competitive exams led the ministry to review the NEET PG process.
Nature of the step: a precautionary measure, taken in the best interests of students and to protect the exam.
Next step: a fresh date would be notified at the earliest, and the ministry regretted the inconvenience to candidates.
What other exam reforms followed in June 2024?
On the same day, the Ministry of Education set up a high-level committee of experts. It was chaired by Dr K. Radhakrishnan, former chairman of ISRO. Its brief, set out in the Ministry of Education release of 22 June 2024, covered three areas.
Exam process: reform of how exams are conducted, to make them transparent and fair.
Data security: stronger rules for protecting papers and candidate data.
NTA itself: how the National Testing Agency is structured and how it works.
The committee was asked to report within two months. Its remit covered NTA exams such as NEET UG. NEET PG is run by NBEMS, a separate body under the Ministry of Health.

How was the NEET PG 2024 postponed exam finally held?
The NEET PG 2024 postponed exam was held on 11 August 2024 in two shifts. The Ministry of Health release of 11 August 2024 gives the main figures. Admit cards went to 2,28,540 candidates. The exam ran at 416 centres in 170 cities.
Security was tightened. More than 1,950 independent appraisers and 300 flying squad members watched the centres. NBEMS ran a central command centre in Dwarka, Delhi, and eight regional command centres.
Candidates did not have to apply again. But the old test centres were cancelled. Every candidate had to pick four preferred test cities in a window from 19 to 22 July 2024, according to the NBEMS notice of 18 July 2024. The cut-off date for finishing internship stayed at 15 August 2024, as set in the NEET PG 2024 Information Bulletin.
What were the NEET PG 2024 result and cut-off?
NBEMS declared the NEET PG 2024 result on 23 August 2024. Its result notice of 23 August 2024 also says experts reviewed every question after the exam and found none technically incorrect. Scorecards could be downloaded on or after 30 August 2024.
The cut-off is the lowest position that counts as qualified. For 2024 it was set as a percentile, meaning your place among all candidates, not your marks. It was then lowered twice on the Ministry of Health's direction, as the table shows.
Category | At result (23 August 2024) | 6 January 2025 | 25 February 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|
General and EWS | 50th percentile | 15th percentile | 5th percentile |
General PwBD | 45th percentile | 10th percentile | 5th percentile |
SC, ST and OBC | 40th percentile | 10th percentile | 5th percentile |
Ranks did not change when the percentile fell. Only the line for who could join counselling moved, as both the NBEMS notice of 6 January 2025 and the NBEMS notice of 25 February 2025 state.
