NEET PG counselling 2026: rounds, fees and seats

PG seats split half and half, not 85 and 15

The Medical Counselling Committee, which runs central counselling, allots half of all postgraduate seats in India. Each state allots the other half to its own.

Four rounds, each with the same four stages

There are four rounds: Round 1, Round 2, a mop up round and a stray vacancy round. In each you register, pick colleges, get a seat and report to the college.

Registration is cheap, the deposit is not

On the central track, general and EWS candidates pay about Rs. 1,000 to register. They also put down a refundable deposit of about Rs. 25,000, which comes back.

Reserved categories pay roughly half of that

SC, ST, OBC and PwD candidates pay about Rs. 500 to register with a refundable deposit of about Rs. 10,000 on the all India quota track.

Deemed universities sit in another bracket

A deemed university is a private institution with university status. A seat there needs about Rs. 5,000 to register and a refundable deposit of about Rs. 2,00,000.

What you are actually competing for

India had about 82,059 postgraduate medical seats in 2025, against 31,185 in 2014. The number has more than doubled, but applications have grown faster still.
