Surgeon salary in India in 2026 from official pay rules: Senior Resident to Professor pay levels, NPA, DA and what you earn while training for MS. Plan ahead.

The surgeon salary in India is clearest in government service, where it is set by the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. A surgeon who has just finished an MS (Master of Surgery) and joins AIIMS as a Senior Resident starts at a basic pay of ₹67,700 a month. Add the 20% Non-Practising Allowance and today's 60% Dearness Allowance, and that is about ₹1,21,860 a month before house rent and other allowances.
From there, pay climbs post by post. An Assistant Professor of Surgery at AIIMS starts at ₹1,01,500 basic pay and a Professor at ₹1,68,900. This guide walks through each step, what you earn while you train, why private hospital pay has no official number, and how students who study MBBS abroad can reach the same ladder.
Key Takeaways
- Clear official starting point. A Senior Resident after MS is paid at Level 11 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, with an entry basic pay of ₹67,700 plus allowances including NPA, as AIIMS Nagpur's June 2026 advertisement shows.
- Faculty posts pay more at every step. AIIMS Bathinda's July 2026 advertisement places Assistant Professors at ₹1,01,500 to ₹1,67,400 and Professors at ₹1,68,900 to ₹2,20,400 basic pay.
- Three parts make the salary. Basic pay, a Non-Practising Allowance of 20% of basic pay and Dearness Allowance, which rose to 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026.
- You are paid while you train. NMC rules say MS students in every institution get a stipend at par with state or central government colleges in the same state.
- A revision is on the way. The 8th Central Pay Commission was set up on 3 November 2025 and has 18 months to report.
What is the surgeon salary in India in 2026?
The surgeon salary in India in 2026 starts at a basic pay of ₹67,700 a month for a Senior Resident with an MS degree in government service. With a 20% Non-Practising Allowance and 60% Dearness Allowance on basic pay, that comes to about ₹1,21,860 a month. Faculty posts at AIIMS start higher, at ₹1,01,500 basic pay.
A surgeon in India is an MBBS doctor who has gone on to a postgraduate surgical qualification. The National Medical Commission's Post-Graduate Medical Education Regulations 2023 list six MS degrees: General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), and Traumatology and Surgery. Each runs for 3 years including the exam, or 2 years if you already hold a diploma in the same subject.
Why start with government pay? Because it is the only surgeon salary in India that is written down in public documents. A recruitment advertisement prints the pay level, the pay range and the allowances. That makes it a number you can plan around, and it is the benchmark private hospitals are measured against.
If you are still deciding whether surgery is for you, our guide on how to become a surgeon explains the training route in detail. This page is about the money.
How is a government surgeon's pay built?
A government surgeon's pay has three parts: basic pay from the pay matrix, a Non-Practising Allowance (NPA) of 20% of basic pay because the doctor gives up private practice, and Dearness Allowance (DA), which the government revises to keep up with prices. House rent and transport allowances come on top.
Here's each part in plain words.
Basic pay. This is the biggest part of any government surgeon salary in India. The 7th Central Pay Commission report replaced the old pay bands with a pay matrix. Every post sits at a level, and each level is a column of pay cells. You join at the first cell. Each annual increment moves you one cell down.
Non-Practising Allowance. The same report recommends NPA at 20% of basic pay for doctors, on one condition: basic pay plus NPA must not go above the average of the Apex Level (₹2,25,000) and the Cabinet Secretary's level (₹2,50,000). That average is ₹2,37,500 a month. No post in this guide comes close to it.
Dearness Allowance. The Department of Expenditure raised DA for central government employees from 58% to 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026, in an office memorandum dated 22 April 2026. AIIMS New Delhi forwarded that order to its own staff.
One honest caveat. In this guide we work out DA on basic pay only, because that is how the memorandum defines it. Whether DA is also paid on NPA depends on your employer's pay rules, so check your offer letter.

Surgeon salary in India by post: from Senior Resident to Professor
The surgeon salary in India rises in clear steps in central institutions such as AIIMS. Two recent official advertisements give the figures. AIIMS Nagpur's Senior Resident advertisement of 19 June 2026 covers the first post after MS. AIIMS Bathinda's faculty advertisement of 31 July 2026 covers the four teaching posts.
| Post | Who it is for | Pay level (7th CPC) | Basic pay per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Resident | MS (or MCh) holder, tenure of up to 3 years | Level 11, cell 1 | ₹67,700 |
| Assistant Professor | Faculty entry post | Level 12 | ₹1,01,500 to ₹1,67,400 |
| Associate Professor | Faculty | Level 13-A1+ | ₹1,38,300 to ₹2,09,200 |
| Additional Professor | Faculty | Level 13-A2+ | ₹1,48,200 to ₹2,11,400 |
| Professor | Senior faculty | Level 14-A | ₹1,68,900 to ₹2,20,400 |
Both advertisements add "usual allowances including NPA (if applicable)" to the basic pay. The faculty pay applies to surgical departments in the same way as to any other: the Bathinda advertisement lists General Surgery, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, Burns and Plastic Surgery, Surgical Oncology and Surgical Gastroenterology among its posts.
Notice the shape of the ladder. The jump from Senior Resident to Assistant Professor is the biggest single step, with a 50% rise in entry basic pay. That's why many young surgeons treat senior residency as an investment year rather than an end point. Once you are faculty, each promotion also lifts your ceiling, not just your starting cell.
What does a surgeon earn per month after allowances?
A Senior Resident surgeon earns about ₹1,21,860 a month from basic pay, NPA and DA together, before house rent and other allowances. An Assistant Professor earns about ₹1,82,700 and a Professor about ₹3,04,020 at the entry cell of each level, using 20% NPA and 60% DA on basic pay.
Here is the working, so you can check every number of the surgeon salary in India at each post:
| Post (entry cell) | Basic pay | + NPA (20%) | + DA (60% of basic) | Monthly total | Yearly total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Senior Resident | ₹67,700 | ₹13,540 | ₹40,620 | ₹1,21,860 | about ₹14.6 lakh |
| Assistant Professor | ₹1,01,500 | ₹20,300 | ₹60,900 | ₹1,82,700 | about ₹21.9 lakh |
| Associate Professor | ₹1,38,300 | ₹27,660 | ₹82,980 | ₹2,48,940 | about ₹29.9 lakh |
| Additional Professor | ₹1,48,200 | ₹29,640 | ₹88,920 | ₹2,66,760 | about ₹32.0 lakh |
| Professor | ₹1,68,900 | ₹33,780 | ₹1,01,340 | ₹3,04,020 | about ₹36.5 lakh |
These totals are our own sums of the official parts. They leave out house rent allowance, transport allowance and anything your institute adds, and they are before tax. Your real pay slip will usually show more than this table, and it rises again with every annual increment.
What do you earn while training for MS?
During your 3 year MS you are paid a stipend, not a salary. Regulation 5.4 of the NMC's PGMER 2023 says postgraduate students in all institutions must get a stipend at par with the stipend paid in state or central government medical institutions of the state or Union Territory where the college is located.
So the amount depends on where you train, not on whether the college is private or government. Your full surgeon salary in India only starts once the MS is done. That's a real protection for students in private colleges. The same regulations also give every postgraduate student at least 20 days of paid casual leave a year and one weekly holiday, subject to work needs.
Our guide to PG resident stipends in India lists what states pay. If you are earlier on the path, our explainer on the house surgeon role covers the intern years before MS.

Super-specialist surgeons: does an MCh pay more?
An MCh (Master of Chirurgie) is a 3 year super-speciality degree taken after MS. In government service an MCh surgeon moves up the same Senior Resident and faculty ladder shown above. The gain comes from the posts it opens, since super-speciality departments recruit only candidates with the right feeder degree.
The PGMER 2023 lists 16 MCh courses, and for most of them MS or DNB in General Surgery is the feeder degree. That includes Neurosurgery, Urology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Paediatric Surgery and Cardio Vascular and Thoracic Surgery.
You can see this in the AIIMS Nagpur advertisement. Senior Resident posts in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Surgical Gastroenterology and Surgical Oncology ask for MS in General Surgery, while MCh holders in that discipline may also apply. Same Level 11 pay, but a narrower field of competitors and a direct line into a specialist department, which is where the surgeon salary in India grows fastest over a career.
Entry to an MCh runs through NEET-SS. Our guide to NEET-SS covers eligibility. NEETsheet has career walkthroughs for two popular choices, how to become a neurosurgeon in India and how to become a plastic surgeon in India, and we have our own guide on the plastic surgeon route.
Why is there no official private surgeon salary?
There is no official private surgeon salary in India because private hospitals set pay contract by contract and no regulator publishes it. Any single figure you see online for private pay is an estimate. That's why this guide sticks to government pay, which is printed in recruitment documents.
What moves private pay is easy to name, even if it can't be measured honestly:
- Speciality. Super-specialists in high-demand fields usually command more than general surgeons.
- City and hospital type. Metro corporate hospitals, smaller private hospitals and your own practice pay in very different ways.
- Case volume. Many private contracts link part of the pay to the number of procedures you do.
- Experience and reputation. Referrals build over years, and income usually follows.
Use the government surgeon salary in India figures above as your benchmark when you compare an offer, and read the terms as closely as the pay. Senior Resident posts, for example, are contracts: the AIIMS Nagpur advertisement says they carry no provident fund, pension or gratuity, and bar any private practice during the contract. Will the 8th Pay Commission change surgeon pay?
Yes, it is expected to. The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted by a Ministry of Finance resolution dated 3 November 2025. Its terms of reference cover central government employees, and it must make its recommendations within 18 months of its constitution.
Until the government accepts and notifies its report, the 7th CPC matrix stays in force, so every figure on this page still applies. When the new matrix arrives, each level above will map to a new rupee value, and the surgeon salary in India for every post will move with it. It's worth checking this page again before you sign anything.

The path from NEET to a surgeon's salary, including MBBS abroad
Every surgeon salary in India starts with the same gate: an MBBS degree that lets you register in India. You can earn that in an Indian college or abroad. Students who study in Europe follow a few extra registration steps, then join the same NEET-PG queue for an MS seat as everyone else.
Under the NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, a foreign medical graduate needs a course of at least 54 months with 12 months of internship at the same university, teaching in English, a licence to practise in that country, 12 months of supervised internship in India, and a pass in the NMC's licensing test. Here is the whole route in order:
- Qualify NEET-UG. It is required for MBBS in India and for MBBS abroad. NEETsheet explains the NEET qualifying marks you need.
- Finish MBBS and internship. In India, or at a European university whose course meets the FMGL conditions.
- Clear the licensing test and register. Foreign graduates take the FMGE and complete their Indian internship; our guide to FMG internship and registration explains the order.
- Take NEET-PG and choose MS. PGMER 2023 keeps admission through NEET-PG until the first NExT batch is eligible. See our guide to NEET-PG counselling.
- Complete MS, then senior residency. That's when the Level 11 salary starts.
- Move into faculty or specialise further. Apply for Assistant Professor posts, or take NEET-SS for an MCh.
Studying in Europe also keeps a second door open. Graduates can train as specialists in the EU instead of coming back for MS, and our guides to specialist training in Europe and doctor salary in Europe compare that route. Your next step
A career in surgery is long, but it is one of the few in medicine where the reward at each stage is written down in advance. The surgeon salary in India rises with every post you earn. Whether your MBBS is in India or in Europe, the ladder is the same once you are registered.
