How to Apply
Admission to Edinburgh Medicine is through UCAS, the UK's central university application system, and is decided on academic results, the UCAT admissions test and an assessment day that now includes interviews, not on NEET. Edinburgh admits only about 21 international students to Medicine per year, so it is one of the most competitive medical admissions routes in the world. Indian students who later want to practise in India must also have qualified NEET before starting.
Applicants register for and sit the UCAT admissions test in the summer before applying; Edinburgh uses the UCAT heavily in shortlisting, and a situational judgement Band 4 leads to rejection.
Medicine has an early UCAS deadline in mid-October, with a personal statement and predicted or achieved A-level / IB grades.
Shortlisted candidates are invited to an Edinburgh assessment day, which now includes short interviews; home applicants attend in person and international applicants are usually assessed online.
Offers are made to successful candidates, typically conditional on final results such as AAA including Chemistry, or the IB equivalent, achieved at the first attempt.
Applicants confirm their place by meeting the conditions of the offer, plus occupational health and enhanced criminal-record checks.
The new intake begins the six-year MBChB course in the autumn semester.
Applicants need top school-leaving grades achieved at the first attempt: a typical A-level offer of AAA including Chemistry plus one of Biology, Mathematics or Physics, or the equivalent in the International Baccalaureate (38 points with 666 at Higher Level including Chemistry). GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry, English and Mathematics at grade A or 7 are also required, and resits are generally not accepted.
Subjects:
There is no fixed age bar beyond the standard school-leaving age; applicants are expected to be completing their qualifying examinations, and offers are conditional on occupational health clearance and an enhanced criminal-record check.
International applicants apply through UCAS, sit the UCAT and, if shortlisted, attend an assessment day with interviews. Fee status is decided by ordinary residence rather than nationality, so an Indian student resident in India applies as an overseas student. Indian students who plan to return to India also need a valid NEET qualification.

Legacy
For nearly three centuries, Edinburgh has shaped the history of medicine, from anaesthesia and antiseptic surgery to the first women to enter a British university. The figures below studied or held professorships at Edinburgh.
Sir James Young Simpson studied and later held the Chair of Midwifery at Edinburgh, where in 1847 he pioneered the use of chloroform as an anaesthetic in childbirth and surgery. His discovery transformed the relief of pain in medicine and, despite early opposition, made modern anaesthesia possible. He remains one of the towering figures of the Edinburgh school.
Joseph, Lord Lister, was Regius Professor of Clinical Surgery at Edinburgh, where he developed antiseptic surgery. By sterilising wounds and instruments with carbolic acid, he dramatically reduced fatal post-operative infections and transformed surgery into a far safer discipline across the world.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and practised as a doctor before becoming the author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. His Edinburgh training in careful observation and deduction directly inspired his most famous creation, linking the medical school to one of the best-known figures in world literature.
Dr Joseph Bell was a surgeon and lecturer at Edinburgh renowned for diagnosing patients by acute observation and logical deduction. He taught the young Conan Doyle and was the real-life model for Sherlock Holmes, embodying the Edinburgh tradition of diagnostic reasoning.
Charles Darwin enrolled to study medicine at Edinburgh in the 1820s before turning to natural history, later formulating the theory of evolution by natural selection, one of the most important ideas in the history of science. His time at Edinburgh shows the breadth of thinkers the university has drawn.
The Edinburgh Seven, led by Sophia Jex-Blake, were the first group of women to matriculate at any British university when they began studying medicine at Edinburgh in 1869. Although the university later blocked their graduation, their campaign led to legislation that opened the medical profession to women across Britain, a landmark in the history of medical education.

Practising in India
An Edinburgh medical graduate who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting the course abroad, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship and registering with the medical council. Because Edinburgh is a UK degree followed by separate Foundation training for full registration, Indian families should confirm the exact NMC position for a UK qualification before relying on this route.
Step 1
Under NMC rules, an Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning any foreign medical course to be eligible later for Indian licensing. This applies to Edinburgh just as to any other overseas medical school, even though NEET is not part of Edinburgh's own admission.
Step 2
To practise in India, graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT). A UK degree of six years comfortably exceeds the minimum course length the NMC requires.
Step 3
After clearing the exam, graduates complete the required internship and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council. Because the UK MBChB gives provisional GMC registration and is followed by UK Foundation training for full registration, the exact mapping to NMC internship rules should be confirmed case by case with the NMC.
