How to Apply
Admission to Birmingham Medicine is through UCAS, the UK's central university application system, and is decided on academic results, the UCAT admissions test and Multiple Mini Interviews, not on NEET. For international applicants Birmingham ranks eligible candidates by UCAT score for interview selection, and competition for the up-to-28 overseas places is intense. Indian students who later want to practise in India must also have qualified NEET before starting.
Applicants register for and sit the UCAT admissions test in the summer before applying; Birmingham has no fixed cut-off but ranks international applicants by UCAT score to select for interview.
Medicine has an early UCAS deadline of 15 October, with a personal statement and predicted or achieved A-level / IB grades; late supplementary information is not considered.
Shortlisted applicants attend Birmingham's Multiple Mini Interviews; international applicants are usually interviewed online, with role-play and a calculations station.
Offers are made to successful candidates, typically conditional on final results such as A*AA including Chemistry and a second science, or the IB equivalent.
Applicants confirm their place by meeting the conditions of the offer, plus occupational health, immunisation and enhanced criminal-record checks.
The new intake begins the five-year MBChB course at the Edgbaston campus in the autumn.
Applicants need strong school-leaving grades: a typical A-level offer of A*AA including Chemistry plus a second science (from Biology, Physics or Mathematics), with a minimum predicted AAA, or the equivalent in the International Baccalaureate (7,6,6 at Higher Level including Chemistry and a second science). At least seven GCSEs are scored, and must include Biology and Chemistry (or dual-award science), English and Maths at grade 6 or above. Indian applicants are generally expected to have around 85% overall in Standard XII with high marks in the sciences.
Subjects:
There is no fixed age bar beyond the standard school-leaving age; applicants are expected to be completing their qualifying examinations, and offers are conditional on occupational health and immunisation clearance and an enhanced criminal-record check.
International applicants apply through UCAS, sit the UCAT and, if selected, attend Multiple Mini Interviews. Fee status is decided by ordinary residence rather than nationality, so an Indian student resident in India applies as an overseas student for one of the up-to-28 international places. Indian students who plan to return to India also need a valid NEET qualification.

A strong UCAT score (used to rank international applicants for interview) and success at Birmingham's Multiple Mini Interviews are central to selection alongside top academic grades.
NEET for India Licensing
NEET is not part of Birmingham admission, but Indian students must have qualified NEET-UG before starting if they intend to sit the FMGE/NExT and practise in India later.
Birmingham Medicine uses the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test); the older BMAT was discontinued after 2023.

Birmingham's five-year MBChB integrates science and clinical learning from the start, with early years of case-based science and anatomy at the Edgbaston campus and community placements from Year 1, then hospital placement years across the West Midlands, leading to the MBChB. Students may add an intercalated degree.

Intercalated Option
Students may take an optional additional year for an intercalated BSc (for example in Clinical Anatomy) or a master's, adding a research qualification and extending the course to six years.

A final year of senior clinical placements, an assistantship, an elective and the UK Medical Licensing Assessment, ending in the qualifying examinations for the MBChB, after which graduates enter UK Foundation training.
Clinical training takes place across the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the wider West Midlands teaching network, and is followed after graduation by the UK Foundation Programme (the UK's paid, supervised training that follows the degree). An indicative pattern is:

Legacy
Birmingham has a deep heritage in medical and biomedical science, and the university counts several Nobel laureates. The figures below held professorships at Birmingham, where their landmark work was done.
Sir Peter Medawar held the Chair of Zoology at the University of Birmingham from 1947, and it was in Birmingham that he began the work on acquired immunological tolerance that won him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1960, shared with Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet. His discoveries provided the scientific foundation of modern organ and tissue transplantation. He was an experimental biologist and professor at Birmingham rather than a Birmingham-trained doctor.
Sir Norman Haworth was Mason Professor of Chemistry and Head of Chemistry at the University of Birmingham, where he achieved the first laboratory synthesis of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) and defined the structures of important carbohydrates, work that earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1937. The 'Haworth projection' used across biochemistry is named after him. His achievement was in chemistry, but of profound importance to medicine and nutrition.
Teaching is delivered through the University of Birmingham's College of Medicine and Health and its network of West Midlands teaching hospitals. The College is led by its Head of College and Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Neil Hanley, working with leading clinicians and research scientists at one of the UK's largest medical schools.

Practising in India
A Birmingham medical graduate who wants to practise in India follows the licensing pathway set by the National Medical Commission (NMC): qualifying NEET before starting the course abroad, clearing the NMC screening examination (currently the FMGE, transitioning to the NExT), completing the required internship and registering with the medical council. Because Birmingham is a UK degree followed by separate Foundation training for full registration, Indian families should confirm the exact NMC position for a UK qualification before relying on this route.
Step 1
Under NMC rules, an Indian student must have qualified NEET-UG before beginning any foreign medical course to be eligible later for Indian licensing. This applies to Birmingham just as to any other overseas medical school, even though NEET is not part of Birmingham's own admission.
Step 2
To practise in India, graduates must clear the qualifying examination for foreign medical graduates, currently the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE), which India is replacing with the National Exit Test (NExT). A UK medicine degree meets the minimum course length the NMC requires.
Step 3
After clearing the exam, graduates complete the required internship and register with the National Medical Commission or a State Medical Council. Because the UK MBChB gives provisional GMC registration and is followed by UK Foundation training for full registration, the exact mapping to NMC internship rules should be confirmed case by case with the NMC.
