Hungary is home to four state medical universities that have taught medicine in English for decades, all listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and recognised by India's National Medical Commission.

Introduction

Studying Medicine in Hungary

Hungary sits in the heart of Central Europe and is one of the longest-established destinations for international medical students, having taught medicine in English since 1987. Its four state medical universities follow the European Union standard six-year model, teach entirely in English for international tracks, and combine centuries of academic tradition with modern, research-driven clinical training. Degrees are recognised across the EU and by India's National Medical Commission, so graduates go on to practise across Europe, the UK, the USA, Canada and India after clearing the relevant licensing examination. With safe, affordable and welcoming student cities and a large Indian community, Hungary offers Indian students a genuinely world-class route into medicine.

Centuries of Academic Tradition

Medical education in Hungary dates back to 1769, when Empress Maria Theresa founded the Faculty of Medicine that became Semmelweis University — the oldest medical school in the country. Hungary gave medicine some of its most influential figures, including Ignaz Semmelweis, the "saviour of mothers", who discovered the life-saving value of hand disinfection, and Albert Szent-Györgyi, awarded the 1937 Nobel Prize for isolating vitamin C at the University of Szeged.
