New York Medical University Curacao: NMC Status 2026

New York Medical University Curacao is not currently operational, according to its entry in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS). The directory shows no medical programme on offer today. Its old 4-year MD also falls short of India's 54-month rule, and no graduate appears in any FMGE result from 2023 to 2025.

What is New York Medical University Curacao?

New York Medical University School of Medicine is a private medical school on the Caribbean island of Curacao. Its WDOMS entry gives its address as WTC Piscadera Bay in Willemstad, the capital. Teaching started in 2017.

Despite the name, the school is not in New York. Families sometimes confuse it with New York Medical College, a separate school in Valhalla, New York. The two have different directory entries and nothing in the WDOMS record links them.

WDOMS is the World Directory of Medical Schools, run by WFME and FAIMER. A listing shows that a school exists and has reported its details. It is not an accreditation, and it is not an approval from India.

What does "not currently operational" mean for New York Medical University?

It means the school is not running a medical programme that the directory knows of. The WDOMS entry says the directory "has no information on any medical programs currently offered by this school". The 4-year MD appears only under discontinued programmes.

For a family, the practical point is simple. A school with no current programme cannot give a student a degree that meets Indian rules. Any offer letter in the school's name should be read against this status before any money moves.

Does the New York Medical University MD meet NMC rules?

No. An Indian who studies medicine abroad needs permanent registration from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to work in India. The conditions are in the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 (FMGL). They apply to students who began studying abroad after November 2021. Here is how the WDOMS record compares.

NMC FMGL rule

What WDOMS records for New York Medical University

Course of at least 54 months (regulation 4(a)(i))

4-year MD, so 48 months

12-month internship at the same foreign institution (regulation 4(a)(ii))

No internship recorded

Degree taught in English (regulation 4(a)(iii))

English

Licence to practise in the country that awards the degree, on a par with its citizens (regulation 4(b))

No licensing route recorded for Curacao

School is running the programme

Not currently operational, no current programme

The 54-month course rule

Regulation 4(a)(i) of the FMGL asks for a course of at least 54 months, so four and a half years. The New York Medical University MD is recorded as 4 years. That is six months short before the internship is even counted.

The same-institution internship rule

Regulation 4(a)(ii) asks for a 12-month internship at the same foreign school, on top of the course. Schedule I adds that the whole course, training and internship must happen at that one institution. No part may be done in India or in a third country. A degree whose clinical years are spent outside Curacao would not meet this rule.

After graduation: the Indian steps

For an Indian student, the route from a foreign medical school to practice in India has three steps, in this order.

  1. Meet every FMGL condition abroad. A course of at least 54 months, a 12-month internship at the same school, English teaching and a licence in the country that awards the degree.

  2. Pass FMGE. FMGE, the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination, is the screening test run by NBEMS.

  3. Complete a 12-month supervised internship in India. The graduate applies to the NMC for this after passing FMGE.

Our post on which NMC rules apply to you explains who falls under the 2021 rules and who does not.

Is New York Medical University recognised by NMC?

The NMC does not recognise or endorse any foreign medical school. Its information desk for students going abroad says it "does not endorse any list" of foreign medical institutions. A degree counts in India only if the student meets every FMGL condition and then clears FMGE.

So an old claim that New York Medical University is "NMC approved" or "MCI approved" has no basis. The Medical Council of India (MCI) was replaced by the NMC in September 2020. Our guide on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition shows how to test any school yourself.

Can New York Medical University graduates take the USMLE?

No. The USMLE is the United States Medical Licensing Examination. To sit it, a foreign graduate needs ECFMG Certification. ECFMG has added a note to the WDOMS entry for the school.

The note says students and graduates of the school are not eligible for ECFMG Certification or the USMLE. ECFMG will only reconsider after the school shows it is accredited by a WFME-recognised agency serving Curacao. WFME is the World Federation for Medical Education.

This matters even for a student who only plans to work in India, because the US route is often sold as a backup. Each country sets its own test: FMGE for India, the USMLE for the United States, PLAB for the United Kingdom. Our post on USMLE after MBBS in Europe explains the US route in full.

Is New York Medical University accredited by CAAM-HP?

No. CAAM-HP, the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and Other Health Professions, is the regional accreditor for Caribbean medical schools. Its Assessed Programs register lists every school it has assessed. New York Medical University is not on it.

Two Curacao schools do appear on the register, with very different results.

New York Medical University and FMGE results

NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, publishes FMGE results by country and by school on its FMGE page. No row for New York Medical University appears in the 2023, 2024 or 2025 reports. Three other Curacao schools do appear.

Who can apply to New York Medical University?

WDOMS records that the discontinued MD took students after an undergraduate degree, with an entrance exam. That is the US graduate-entry model, not a programme for students straight after Class 12. Since the school is not currently operational, there is no open intake recorded.

For any medical school abroad, the NMC rule is the same. An Indian student must qualify NEET UG, and the result stays valid for three years (NMC information desk).

What if you hold an offer from New York Medical University?

Do not pay a fee until each point below is answered in writing, on university letterhead. Each question maps to a clause of the FMGL or to the WDOMS record.

  • Is the school operating today? WDOMS lists it as not currently operational, with no current programme.

  • How many months is the medical course? NMC asks for at least 54 months, not counting any pre-medical year.

  • Where is the 12-month internship? It must be at the same school, in Curacao, on top of the course.

  • Will every clinical rotation happen in Curacao? Training in the United States or any other country breaks the same-institution rule.

  • Can graduates get a full licence to practise in Curacao? NMC asks for a licence on a par with Curacao citizens.

  • Which WFME-recognised agency accredits the school? ECFMG names this as the condition for USMLE eligibility.

Our web story on NMC's 2026 advisory on MBBS abroad covers the latest NMC notice in two minutes.

Alternatives to New York Medical University Curacao

In the Caribbean, compare schools that show up in the NBEMS tables and the CAAM-HP register. Our guides to the American University of Barbados and Lincoln American University test each school against the same NMC rules.

futureMBBS works with 23 partner universities in 9 countries: the Czech Republic (5), Hungary (4), Poland (3), Slovakia (3), Croatia (2), Latvia (2), Romania (2), Cyprus (1) and Lithuania (1). Each runs a six-year English-medium programme with clinical training in its own country. Our guide to MBBS in Europe compares them.

Conclusion: is New York Medical University Curacao right for Indian students?

On the evidence available in October 2026, no. The school is listed as not currently operational, with no current programme. Its recorded MD is 48 months long with no internship, below the NMC's 54-month rule.

ECFMG bars its students from the USMLE, CAAM-HP has not assessed it, and no graduate appears in three years of FMGE results. A family that wants a degree valid in India should choose a running programme that meets every FMGL clause on paper first.
