Crimea Federal University MBBS: FMGE Results and NMC Rules

Crimea Federal University, officially V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University in Simferopol, has one of the strongest FMGE records of any university in Russia. In the December 2025 FMGE, 168 of its 275 graduates passed (61.09%). The main thing to understand first is Crimea's disputed status, explained plainly below.

Key Takeaways

  • FMGE is the screening test for doctors with a foreign degree. Crimea Federal University graduates passed it at 61.09% in December 2025, 54.80% in 2024 and 59.62% in 2023 (NBEMS).

  • The June 2025 session was much weaker: 19 of 93 candidates passed (20.43%). One session is never the full picture, so the table below shows every result since 2023.

  • Crimea has been run by Russia since 2014. In UN General Assembly resolution 68/262, 100 countries voted not to recognise that change of status. Most governments still treat Crimea as part of Ukraine.

  • The NMC FMGL Regulations 2021 set the rules for foreign degrees. The course must last at least 54 months and be taught in English. It must include a 12-month internship at the same university.

  • futureMBBS does not place students at Crimea Federal University. Our 23 partner universities are in 9 EU countries.

What is Crimea Federal University?

Crimea Federal University is a public university in Simferopol, the main city of the Crimean peninsula. Its full name is V.I. Vernadsky Crimean Federal University, often shortened to CFU. Medicine is taught at its medical academy, the Medical Academy named after S.I. Georgievsky.

Indian families usually search for it as "MBBS in Russia, Crimea Federal University". The university works under the Russian system, so it is covered on our MBBS in Russia country page. The degree it awards is a diploma in General Medicine, which India treats as equal to MBBS only when the NMC rules below are met.

Crimea Federal University and the status of Crimea

Crimea was part of Ukraine until 2014. Russia took control of the peninsula that year, after a referendum held on 16 March 2014. Since then, Russian institutions have run daily life in Crimea, including its universities.

On 27 March 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 68/262 on the territorial integrity of Ukraine. It passed with 100 votes in favour, 11 against and 58 abstentions. The resolution said the referendum had no validity. It asked all states not to recognise any change to the status of Crimea. You can read the UN News report of the vote and the text of resolution 68/262.

For a student, this is a practical point, not a political one. The degree is issued by a Russian university on land most countries do not recognise as Russian. For India, what decides whether the degree works is the NMC rulebook and the FMGE, which the next sections explain.

Is the Crimea Federal University degree valid in India?

India does not approve foreign universities country by country. The NMC, India's National Medical Commission, sets rules that every foreign degree must meet. These are the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021, listed on the NMC rules and regulations page.

A Crimea Federal University degree counts in India only if all of these are true:

  • Course length: the medical course lasts at least 54 months, which is four and a half years.

  • Internship abroad: the student completes a 12-month internship at the same foreign university where the degree was earned.

  • Language: the degree is taught in English. A course taught in Russian does not qualify.

  • Licence abroad: the graduate can get a licence to practise in the country that awarded the degree. It must be on the same terms as a local citizen.

  • Same university throughout: the whole course and internship are done at one foreign institution. No part may be done in India.

  • Time limit: the whole course must be finished within ten years of joining.

  • After returning: the graduate passes FMGE and then completes a 12-month supervised internship in India.

The English rule matters most here. The admission letter should name English as the medium of instruction. Our guide on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition explains the listing a university needs. Our page on eligibility for MBBS abroad covers the NEET and age rules for students.

Crimea Federal University FMGE pass rate, 2023 to 2025

FMGE, the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, is the test an Indian student with a foreign degree must pass before working in India. NBEMS, the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences, publishes results for every university. Our guide to the FMGE exam explains the format.

NBEMS lists Crimea Federal University under the Russian Federation. In 2023 and 2024 it appears under two spellings of the same name. The table shows each line as NBEMS prints it.

How the Crimea Federal University FMGE result compares

The table below puts the Crimea Federal University result next to the national result for all candidates.

NBEMS also gives a total for all graduates of Russian universities in 2025. In June 2025, 822 of 4,550 passed (18.07%). In December 2025, 2,128 of 6,878 passed (30.94%).

In three of the four results, Crimea Federal University graduates passed at about twice the national rate. The June 2025 dip shows why a family should look at several sessions, not one. Our web story on FMGE pass rates by country shows how Russia compares with other countries.

The medical academy entry listed under Ukraine

NBEMS also lists a separate entry, "Medical Academy named after S.I. Georgievsky of Vernadsky CFU", under Ukraine. NBEMS records these graduates under Ukraine, not Russia. Their results are much lower.

So the name printed on the final degree matters. The strong results above belong to graduates listed as Crimean Federal University under the Russian Federation.

Studying at Crimea Federal University: the constraints to know

  • Disputed territory: the university sits in a region whose status most UN member states do not recognise, as the UN vote above shows.

  • Language of patients: patients in Simferopol speak Russian. Clinical years in hospital therefore depend on Russian, even when lectures are in English.

  • Degree wording: the degree is a diploma in General Medicine. It counts as MBBS in India only under the FMGL rules above.

  • Wider Russia issues: we have covered mass expulsions of medical students at a Russian university. Our guide to the disadvantages of studying MBBS in Russia covers the problems families raise most often.

For costs across Russian universities, see MBBS in Russia fees for 2026.

Does futureMBBS offer admission to Crimea Federal University?

No. futureMBBS does not offer admission support for Crimea Federal University or any university in Russia. We work with 23 partner universities in 9 EU countries. They are in the Czech Republic (5), Hungary (4), Poland (3), Slovakia (3), Croatia (2), Latvia (2), Romania (2), Cyprus (1) and Lithuania (1). This guide exists so families researching Crimea Federal University have the official facts in one place.

Conclusion

Crimea Federal University has a strong FMGE record. Since 2023, most of its results sit between 55% and 61%. The national rate in those years was 17% to 26%. The June 2025 result of 20.43% is the exception. The decision rests on two things: accepting Crimea's disputed status, and making sure the course is taught in English and meets every NMC FMGL rule.
