MBBS in Russia Fees 2026: The Real Six Year Cost

MBBS in Russia fees for the 2026/27 intake run from around RUB 350,000 to RUB 1,300,000 a year for international students, roughly Rs. 4 lakh to Rs. 14.8 lakh (September 2026). The six year total at most state medical universities lands between Rs. 22 lakh and Rs. 45 lakh, tuition only.

Those MBBS in Russia fees are the figures the universities themselves publish in their 2026/27 rectors' orders, not the ones circulating on price lists. The gap between the two matters, and this page sets out exactly where it comes from.

MBBS in Russia fees 2026 at a glance

Every figure below is the rate for foreign citizens on the six year General Medicine programme, taken from the university's own published order or fee page for 2026/27. Conversions use the Central Bank of Russia rate of 1 RUB to 1.1398 INR on 17 September 2026.

Sechenov's published six-year schedule comes to more than four times the six year total at Orenburg for the same qualification. Moscow carries a premium that has nothing to do with the degree an Indian graduate brings home, and every regional university in that table awards the same six year Specialist degree in General Medicine.

Why is the advertised fee rarely what you pay?

Russian universities do not price the six years the same way, and this is where most MBBS in Russia fees comparisons go wrong. There are three patterns, a flat rate held for all six years, a tapering rate that falls each year, and an escalating rate that climbs. Mixing them up changes the total by lakhs.

Flat rate for all six years

Volgograd State Medical University sets RUB 480,000 for courses one to six in a single order, and Tver State Medical University publishes a full course price of RUB 2,580,000 alongside its RUB 430,000 annual rate. These are the only two universities in this set that commit to the whole course in writing. If the six year cost is what worries you, that commitment is worth more than a slightly lower year one number somewhere else.

Tapering, where year one is the most expensive

Orenburg State Medical University charges RUB 422,380 in year one and RUB 233,020 in year six. Kursk State Medical University drops from RUB 300,000 to RUB 179,580. Siberian State Medical University falls from RUB 384,000 to RUB 329,050. Quote the year one figure for these and you overstate the real cost, sometimes by a fifth.

Escalating, where year one is the cheapest

Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University publishes a schedule that climbs from RUB 1,250,000 in year one to RUB 1,756,000 in year six. Here the year one figure understates the total by a very wide margin. A family budgeting from the first year alone would be short by more than RUB 2 million across the course.

The rate can also simply go up

Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University charged foreign citizens RUB 1,000,000 for 2025/26 and RUB 1,200,000 for 2026/27, a rise of 20% in one year, both figures set out in its own rectors' orders. Northern State Medical University publishes separate notifications of tuition fee change for courses two through six, and Sechenov states that its fee information is updated annually. Unless the university publishes a full course price, treat this year's number as this year's number.

The English medium premium, in numbers

Where a university runs both tracks, the English programme costs more. The premium is not uniform.

The English track is where MBBS in Russia fees stop being a simple comparison. Paying the premium is not optional for an Indian student who intends to come home and practise, and the next section explains why.

The rule that decides whether the fee was worth paying

MBBS in Russia fees only buy something useful if the qualification is accepted back home. An Indian graduate of a foreign medical school has to clear the licensing exam before practising in India, and the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 decide whether the course even qualifies to sit it. Four conditions apply.

1. Minimum course duration of fifty-four months. The six year Russian Specialist programme clears this comfortably.

2. Medium of instruction in English. This is the condition that Russia trips over. Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, Siberian State Medical University and RUDN publish General Medicine as a Russian medium programme only. Their fee may look attractive on a price list, and the qualification will not meet this test.

3. Twelve months of internship in the same foreign medical institution. The internship has to be completed at the university that awarded the degree, not back in India and not in a third country.

4. The entire course, training and internship outside India in the same institution. No part of the medical training may be done in India or in any country other than the one awarding the qualification.

The regulations also require the graduate to be registered with the professional regulatory body competent to grant a licence to practise in that country, on the same footing as a citizen of that country. Before you commit to any fee, check that the specific programme is listed on the World Directory of Medical Schools and that the university's own order names it as an English medium programme, in writing, for the year you are joining.

Kazan Federal University is a useful illustration of how carefully this has to be read. Its own fee table annotates Dentistry as taught in English for courses one and two and in Russian for courses three to five. General Medicine carries no such annotation. That single line in a fee table is the difference between a degree that qualifies and one that does not, and it is not something an agent's brochure will tell you.

What do MBBS in Russia fees not cover?

Volgograd State Medical University spells the exclusions out in its 2026/27 order more plainly than most, and the list applies broadly. Tuition does not include the hostel, does not include medical insurance, does not include the compulsory medical examination, and does not include any commission charged by an intermediary firm. Contract students receive no stipend.

Medical insurance is not a formality. It has been compulsory for every foreign national in Russia since 2016, with a minimum sum insured of RUB 100,000, and every foreign student buys it at their own expense. Add insurance, hostel, the medical examination, flights and living costs, and a RUB 430,000 tuition line becomes a meaningfully larger annual number.

Watch which order you are reading

Universities publish separate fee orders for Russian citizens and for foreign citizens in the same month, with near identical titles. Volgograd's order for Russian citizens shows RUB 320,000 for General Medicine. Its order for foreign citizens shows RUB 480,000 for the same programme, a difference of Rs. 1.82 lakh a year. Siberian State Medical University lists the two categories as adjacent rows, RUB 320,000 for Russian and CIS citizens against RUB 384,000 for everyone else. A price list that looks unusually cheap has often been built from the wrong document.

The Russian government quota, where tuition is free

There is one route where MBBS in Russia fees fall to nothing. The Government of Russia funds tuition for a number of foreign students each year through the quota administered on the official selection portal, and Indian citizens are eligible to apply. Selection runs in two stages: Rossotrudnichestvo screens candidates in their own country through the Russian House or the embassy, and Russian universities then choose from the approved pool. An applicant may name up to six universities in one application.

The portal is direct about the limits of the word free. Tuition is covered and a stipend is paid. Travel to Russia, accommodation, medical insurance and daily living costs are not covered and are paid by the student. For the 2026/27 cycle, applications opened on 15 September 2025 and closed for Indian applicants on 15 January 2026, so the window for the following intake is worth watching from September onward.

What to check before you pay anything

1. Ask for the rector's order, not a price list. Published MBBS in Russia fees always sit inside a numbered order with a date. If the figure you have been quoted is not in that document, it is not the fee.

2. Confirm the order applies to foreign citizens. Check the title of the document names foreign citizens or non-CIS citizens, and not citizens of the Russian Federation.

3. Get all six years, not year one. Ask whether the rate is flat for courses one to six, tapering, escalating, or reset annually, and ask for it in writing.

4. Confirm the English medium in the order itself. The programme must be named as English medium for General Medicine, for your intake year, with no switch to Russian in the clinical years.

5. Price the exclusions separately. Hostel, insurance, the medical examination, flights, and living costs sit outside tuition at every university in this set.

6. Check any commission you are being charged. Volgograd's order states plainly that intermediary firm commissions are not part of the tuition, which means anything added on top is a separate charge and you are entitled to see it itemised.
