What Is a Gap Certificate for NEET?

A gap certificate for NEET is a sworn statement, called an affidavit, that covers the time between passing Class 12 and joining an MBBS or BDS course. The person who signs an affidavit is called the deponent. Here that is the student.

The affidavit records three things. It names the year you passed Class 12 and the school. It states the gap period, for example 2024 to 2026. It then says either that you did not join any institution in that time, or which course you did join.

Do You Need a Gap Certificate to Apply for NEET UG 2026?

No. The NTA NEET UG 2026 information bulletin asks for no gap certificate at the application stage. Its eligibility rules are about age and subjects, not about when you passed Class 12.

The age rule comes from the National Medical Commission (NMC), the regulator for medical education in India. It sits in the NMC Graduate Medical Education Regulations, listed on the NMC rules and regulations page.

For context, the NTA press release on the NEET UG 2026 result (16 July 2026) says close to 20 lakh candidates appeared and 11.21 lakh qualified. That is about 56%, or more than one in two. Of the 138 candidates above 690 marks, over 93% were sitting NEET for the first time.

Is a Gap Certificate Required for MCC Counselling 2026?

Not by MCC itself. MCC, the Medical Counselling Committee, runs All India Quota counselling for government seats and deemed universities. Its UG Counselling 2026 information bulletin lists the documents to carry when you report to the allotted college. A gap certificate is not on that list.

The same bulletin adds one line that matters for gap-year students. It tells candidates to check the allotted college's information for any other document that college requires. That is where a gap certificate usually appears.

Which Colleges Ask for a Gap Certificate for NEET Admission?

Individual colleges decide this, and some publish their own format. Two examples with formats on their official websites are below.

If your allotted college has its own format, use that one. A format written for one college may include declarations another college does not ask for.

What Does a Gap Affidavit for NEET Contain?

Going by the two published formats, a gap affidavit for NEET usually carries these parts:

• Your details: full name, parent's name, age and full residential address, written as they appear on your Class 12 documents.

• Qualifying exam: the year you passed Class 12 and the name and address of the school or board.

• Gap period: the exact years, from the year you passed Class 12 to the year of admission.

• Reason or activity: that you did not join any institution, with the reason, or the name of the course you joined or completed.

• Character declarations: in the Hamdard format, that no civil or criminal case is pending against you.

• Verification: a closing line that the contents are true, with the place and date, your signature and the notary's stamp.

How to Make a Gap Certificate for NEET, Step by Step

1. Get the right format. Look at the admission notice of the college you have been allotted. Use its format if it has one.

2. Buy the stamp paper. Both formats above use Rs. 100 non-judicial stamp paper. Buy it in your own name from an authorised stamp vendor or through e-stamping in your state.

3. Fill in the details. Print or type the format on the stamp paper. Check that your name, dates and school match your mark sheets exactly.

4. Sign before a notary. Do not sign in advance. The notary or advocate watches you sign, then stamps and registers the affidavit.

5. Attach proof of anything you studied. The Hamdard format asks for a photocopy of any exam passed after Class 12 to support the gap.

6. Carry the original and copies. Take the original affidavit and two or three photocopies to the college with your other documents.

What Happens If the Gap Certificate Is Missing or Wrong?

MCC says admission is provisional until the allotted college checks your documents in person. The MCC 2026 bulletin also says candidates without original documents will not be allowed to take admission. If your college lists a gap affidavit, treat it the same way as your mark sheets.

A false statement carries more risk than a missing one. The Hamdard format states that admission can be cancelled at any stage if the facts are found to be wrong. Write the gap exactly as it happened, including any course you started and left.
