NEET UG Registration: Documents, Fees and Form Filling Steps

NEET UG registration is a three step online process on the NTA portal: register and get an application number, complete the form and upload the documents, then pay the fee. The application is only complete when the Confirmation Page is generated.

NEET UG registration: key takeaways

  • Three steps, not one. Register, complete the form, pay. Stopping after step two means no application.

  • The Confirmation Page is the proof. Money leaving your bank account is not proof of payment. If no Confirmation Page is generated, the form has not been submitted.

  • Most fields lock after payment. Personal details, address, identity, exam cities and qualification details become non-editable once the fee is paid and the Confirmation Page is generated.

  • Photograph rules are strict. The passport size photograph must be recent, taken after 1 January of the exam year, with 80% of the image being the face, no mask, ears visible, white background.

  • File sizes are specified to the kilobyte. Photograph 10 to 200 kb, signature 10 to 100 kb, certificates in PDF between 50 and 300 kb.

  • There is no upper age limit. The lower limit is 17 completed on or before 31 December of the exam year.

  • The fee is not refundable and does not carry forward to a future examination.

What does NEET UG registration cost?

The fee depends on category and on whether you sit the exam inside or outside India. These were the NEET (UG) 2026 figures.

Category

Fee in India

Fee outside India

General

Rs 1,700

Rs 9,500

General-EWS and OBC-NCL

Rs 1,600

Rs 9,500

SC, ST, PwBD, PwD, Third Gender

Rs 1,000

Rs 9,500

Two things families get caught by. Processing charges and GST are charged on top by the bank or payment gateway, so the amount debited is slightly higher than the table. And the fee once deposited is not refunded and is not carried forward to a future examination, so an abandoned application is money gone.

What to keep ready before NEET UG registration

The bulletin asks candidates to prepare before opening the form, and that advice is worth following, because the session times out and most fields lock later.

  • Names spelled exactly as on the certificates. Your name, your father's name and your mother's name, matching the documents, not the way the family writes them.

  • One identity document. Indian nationals can use an Aadhaar Card, Indian passport number, DigiLocker, PAN Card number or any other valid Central or State Government photo identity card. NRIs, OCI candidates and foreign nationals use a passport number.

  • Class X marksheet and passing certificate. Both are uploaded, and the certificate is what proves date of birth.

  • A CGPA conversion certificate if your Class X result is in grades. This is uploaded as a separate document.

  • Address proof for present and permanent address.

  • Your own mobile number and email, plus a parent or guardian's. Both are mandatory, and the confirmation page, scanned OMR and scorecard go to both.

  • Six to eight passport size photographs. The bulletin recommends this so the same photograph is used for the form, the exam and counselling.

Using your own Aadhaar as the identity verification method avoids having to submit additional documents, which is the single easiest way to shorten the upload list.

NEET UG registration step by step

  1. Open the application on the official portal. Go to neet.nta.nic.in and start the new registration. Do not use a coaching centre's address, phone number or email anywhere in the form, which the bulletin prohibits.

  2. Register and note the application number. You supply the personal details, create a password and choose a security question and answer. The system then generates an application number, which you need for every later login and all future correspondence.

  3. Verify the mobile number and email by OTP. The OTP on the website is valid for ten minutes only, after which you click Resend OTP. The mobile OTP comes at registration, the email OTP before you submit the fee.

  4. Complete the form. Personal details, question paper medium, three exam cities, educational qualifications, then the uploads. Choose the medium carefully, because it cannot be changed later.

  5. Upload the images and documents to the exact specifications. A live photograph is captured during form filling, and the scanned files follow the sizes in the next section.

  6. Pay the fee online. Debit card, credit card, UPI or net banking. Processing charges and GST are added by the bank or gateway.

  7. Download and keep the Confirmation Page. It is generated only after successful payment, and it is the only proof that the form was submitted. Keep several hard copies.

NEET UG registration document upload specifications

These file sizes are prescribed in the bulletin, and an upload outside them is rejected. This is where most forms stall.

The photograph rule deserves its own line. It must be recent, taken after 1 January of the exam year, colour or black and white, against a white background, with the face unmasked and the ears visible, and 80% of the image area must be the face. Unclear finger and thumb impressions are rejected outright.

Who can apply for NEET UG registration?

Eligibility comes from the NMC regulations rather than from NTA, and the bulletin reproduces it.

  • Lower age limit: 17 years. You must have completed 17 on or before 31 December of the year in which you sit the exam.

  • Upper age limit: none. The bulletin records the NMC position that there is no upper age limit.

  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, with English. Candidates appearing in Class 12 in the exam year select qualifying code 01; those who have already passed select a code from 02 to 07.

  • Nationality: open. Indian nationals, NRIs, OCI candidates and foreign nationals are all eligible to appear.

  • Attempts: not capped by the bulletin. The eligibility rules are framed by age and qualification, not by a limit on how many times you sit.

Our web stories on NEET UG eligibility rules and the age limit and attempts cover this in a shorter form, and the NEET hub carries the syllabus, cutoffs and preparation material.

Qualifying marks after the exam

NEET UG registration gets you to the exam. Qualifying for counselling is a separate bar, set as a percentile rather than a fixed score.

  • General and General-EWS: the 50th percentile.

  • SC, ST and OBC: the 40th percentile.

  • PwBD, Unreserved and General-EWS: the 45th percentile.

  • PwBD, SC, ST and OBC-NCL: the 40th percentile.

The percentile is worked out from the highest marks in the All India common merit list, so the score behind a given percentile moves every year with the paper and the candidate pool. If too few candidates in a category clear the bar, the Central Government may lower it in consultation with the regulators, which is why qualifying percentiles have been reduced in some years. Our post on the marks required for MBBS through NEET puts past years side by side, and the College Predictor turns a score into a realistic college list.

What can be corrected after NEET UG registration?

There is a correction window, and it is short. In the 2026 cycle it ran from 10 to 12 March, two days after applications closed.

Only the permissible fields can be changed in that window, and the bulletin is blunt about the rest: NTA does not edit, modify or alter information after the application process is complete, and any request afterwards will not be entertained. Fields locked after payment include personal details, address, identity details, disability details, exam cities and qualification details.

Two things can never be changed at all once the admit card is issued: the question paper medium, and the examination centre, date and time.

What if the payment fails?

This is the single most common panic during NEET UG registration, and the rule is clear.

  • If the Confirmation Page is not generated, the transaction is cancelled. The form has not been submitted, whatever your bank statement says.

  • Pay again. You have to make another payment to complete the application.

  • Duplicate payments are reconciled afterwards. Multiple payments are reconciled by NTA after the declaration of the final result and refunded.

  • For a cancelled transaction, the amount deducted is normally refunded through the same bank or payment gateway.

The practical lesson is to leave days, not hours, before the closing time. A failed payment at 11:30 PM on the last date leaves no room for a second attempt.

Mistakes that cost candidates their NEET UG registration

  • Using a coaching centre's email, phone or address. The bulletin prohibits it, and it cuts you off from every official communication.

  • Uploading an old photograph. It must be taken after 1 January of the exam year.

  • A photograph where the face is too small. 80% of the image area must be the face, with ears visible and no mask.

  • Treating a bank debit as a submitted form. Only the Confirmation Page counts.

  • Choosing the question paper medium carelessly. It cannot be changed afterwards.

  • Selecting a reserved category you do not hold a Central list certificate for. Candidates who do not fall under the listed reserved categories should apply under General.

  • Assuming the eligibility is settled. Eligibility is purely provisional and subject to the criteria of NMC, DCI, NCISM, NCH and the relevant ministry.

Do you need NEET UG registration to study MBBS abroad?

Yes. The bulletin states it directly: Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India intending to pursue undergraduate medical courses in a foreign medical or dental institute also need to qualify for NEET (UG).

So a family planning an MBBS abroad still registers, still sits the paper, and still needs the qualifying percentile, because the NEET result is what makes the foreign degree usable in India later. Our explainer on whether NEET is required for MBBS abroad covers the rule and the exceptions. Alongside it, check that any university you are considering is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools, the international directory regulators use to confirm that a school exists and is recognised in its own country.

After NEET UG registration: what comes next

The sequence after a successful NEET UG registration is fixed, and each stage has its own page on the NTA site.

  1. City intimation slip, announced on the website before the admit card.

  2. Admit card, downloaded from the NTA website, carrying the centre, date and time.

  3. The exam, 180 minutes, 180 questions, 720 marks.

  4. Recorded responses and answer keys, displayed for challenge.

  5. Result and All India Rank.

  6. Counselling, run by MCC for the 15% All India Quota and by the states for the rest.

Our pages on the NEET exam date, NEET exam centres and MCC NEET UG counselling carry each stage, and the category certificate guide matters before counselling rather than before registration.

Conclusion

NEET UG registration is not difficult, but it is unforgiving. The form locks, the photograph rules are specific, the file sizes are specified to the kilobyte, and the fee does not come back. Almost every story of a lost year starts with a form filled in the last hour.

Open the bulletin, collect the documents on the list above, and fill the form in one sitting at least a week before the window closes. Then keep the Confirmation Page somewhere you can find it in May.
