NEET 2027 Exam Languages: 13 Mediums, Which to Choose
5 Nov 2026
15 min read
NEET is held in 13 languages. See which medium is available at which centres, how many students pick each language, why the choice cannot be changed later, and which language to choose for NEET 2027.

NEET 2027 exam languages are the 13 mediums the National Testing Agency used for NEET (UG) 2026: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. You pick one medium in the application form, it cannot be changed later, and every regional paper comes with the English version printed alongside it.
Key takeaways on NEET 2027 exam languages
NEET (UG) is offered in 13 languages. In 2026, 18.09 lakh of the 22.80 lakh registered candidates chose English (79 per cent), 3.45 lakh chose Hindi (15 per cent) and the remaining 11 regional languages together accounted for about 1.26 lakh candidates.
The medium is chosen once, in the online application form, and the NTA bulletin says the option once chosen cannot be changed. The only chance to alter it is the correction window, which in 2026 ran from 10 to 12 March.
A Hindi or regional-language candidate receives a bilingual test booklet with English printed next to the chosen language. English-medium candidates receive an English-only booklet. In any dispute over translation, the English version is final.
Regional languages are available only at centres in specific states. Tamil, for example, is offered at centres in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. English and Hindi are offered at every centre in India, and English alone at centres abroad.
Your medium has no effect on counselling. The bulletin states that a qualified candidate is eligible for the All India Quota and state quotas irrespective of the medium of the examination.
In which 13 languages is NEET 2027 held?
The NTA has conducted NEET (UG) in 13 languages every year since 2021, up from 11 in 2019 and 2020. The NEET (UG) 2026 Information Bulletin lists them in Chapter 4: Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. The NTA public notice of 15 May 2026 on the re-examination confirmed that the 21 June 2026 paper was again set in all 13 languages. The NEET 2027 bulletin is not out yet; last year's bulletin came in February 2026, and the language list has not changed in six years.
The NEET (UG) syllabus notified by the National Medical Commission is the same for every medium. A Tamil-medium candidate and an English-medium candidate answer the same 180 questions, carrying the same 720 marks, on the same day. The NEET syllabus page on this site breaks the units down subject by subject.
How many students choose each NEET language?
The NTA publishes the number of registered candidates by language with every result. The table below is taken from the NTA Key Data Points of NEET (UG) over the years, released with the NEET 2026 result on 16 July 2026, and cross-checked against the NEET (UG) 2025 result press release and the NEET (UG) 2024 revised result press release of 26 July 2024. The figures are registered candidates; the NTA does not publish appeared or qualified numbers by language.

Two patterns matter for a family deciding now. First, Hindi is the only regional option used by a large block of candidates, and its share has held between 14 and 15 per cent for three years. Second, the southern languages are chosen by very few candidates even in their home states: Kannada by 614 candidates and Malayalam by 787 in 2026. The paper in those languages is a translation of the English paper, and most students who study Biology from NCERT in English stay with English in the exam hall.

Which NEET languages are available at which exam centres?
A regional language is offered only at centres in the states where that language is spoken, and your choice of centre city is limited to your state of permanent or present address. Chapter 4 of the 2026 bulletin sets the table out as follows.
Medium chosen | Where the paper is available |
|---|---|
English | Every examination centre in India and the 14 cities outside India |
Hindi | Every examination centre in India |
Urdu | Every examination centre in India |
Assamese | Centres in Assam |
Bengali | Centres in West Bengal, Tripura, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands |
Gujarati | Centres in Gujarat, Daman and Diu, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli |
Kannada | Centres in Karnataka |
Malayalam | Centres in Kerala and Lakshadweep |
Marathi | Centres in Maharashtra |
Odia | Centres in Odisha |
Punjabi | Centres in Punjab, Chandigarh, and Delhi with Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Noida |
Tamil | Centres in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands |
Telugu | Centres in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana |
The bulletin adds one rule that catches a few candidates each year. Where the number of candidates choosing a city with a regional language is below a certain minimum, the NTA may allot a centre in another city, regardless of the city you opted for. A Marathi-medium candidate in a small town can therefore be sent to a larger city in Maharashtra. Our guide to NEET exam centres and city choice explains how the four city preferences work.
How do you choose the NEET question paper medium in the application form?
The medium is chosen on the examination centre and question paper medium page of the online application, which is step 10 of the form in Appendix IX of the bulletin. The bulletin's checklist for applicants says, in its own words, to choose the question paper medium carefully as it cannot be changed at a later stage.
Register on the NEET portal with your Aadhaar-linked details and APAAR ID; our guide on Aadhaar and APAAR for NEET 2027 shows what to fix in your records before the form opens.
Fill the personal, educational and category details and upload your photograph, signature and documents, as listed in the NEET UG registration documents, fees and steps guide.
On the examination centre and medium page, select your medium from the drop-down of 13 languages. The city list then shows only cities in your state of address, and a regional medium is accepted only if that state is in the table above.
Choose four exam cities in order of preference.
Pay the fee, which in 2026 was Rs. 1,700 for general candidates, Rs. 1,600 for EWS and OBC-NCL, Rs. 1,000 for SC, ST, PwBD and third gender, and Rs. 9,500 for centres abroad. The NEETsheet guide to NEET exam fees keeps the category-wise table.
Download the confirmation page and check the medium printed on it the same day.
Can you change the NEET medium after submitting the form?
Not after the correction window closes. The bulletin's important points state that options once exercised cannot be changed later, including examination centre city and medium of question paper, except when the window for correction in all fields opens. In 2026 that window ran from 10 to 12 March 2026. After it, the bulletin's instruction 27 applies: any request to change the question paper medium, examination centre, date and time provided on the admit card shall not be considered under any circumstances.
The 2026 re-examination proved how firm this is. When the NTA cancelled the 3 May 2026 paper and re-held the exam on 21 June 2026, it opened a window from 15 to 21 May for candidates to update only their present address and choice of city. The medium stayed as originally chosen, even for a fresh sitting six weeks later. The NEETsheet guide to the NEET correction window lists what each year's window allowed.

What does the bilingual NEET test booklet look like?
Candidates opting for English receive a test booklet in English only. Candidates opting for Hindi receive a bilingual booklet in English and Hindi. Candidates opting for a regional language receive the booklet in English plus the selected language, so a Tamil-medium candidate sees each question in Tamil with the English version beside it. The NTA's clarification notice of 19 April 2023 explained the printing: the English and Hindi paper is printed in white, the regional language in yellow, and Urdu in green, so the invigilator hands out the right booklet by colour.
Two rules protect a regional-medium candidate. In case of any ambiguity in the translation of a question, its English version is treated as final, and for the correctness of every question the English version is taken as final. A student who reads the English column whenever the regional wording looks odd loses nothing. The NTA notice of 12 June 2026 on student-friendly measures also added two extra rough-work pages after the instruction page in both the English and regional versions of the paper.
Which NEET language should you choose in 2027?
Choose the language you studied Biology, Physics and Chemistry in during Class 11 and 12. The exam tests the NCERT syllabus, and the words you revised from are the words you will recognise under time pressure. Four situations cover almost every family.
Your situation | Best medium | Why |
|---|---|---|
English-medium school, English NCERT or coaching notes | English | The paper is set in English first; no translation ambiguity at all. 79 per cent of candidates sit this way. |
Hindi-medium school, Hindi NCERT | Hindi | Bilingual booklet gives Hindi and English side by side at every centre in India. 3.45 lakh candidates chose it in 2026. NEETsheet's guide to NEET in Hindi medium covers preparation in Hindi. |
State board in a regional language (Tamil, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi and others), exam centre in that state | Your regional language | You get the regional text plus English on the same page, so technical terms you learnt in English are still there. |
Regional-language school but exam centre outside that state, or studying abroad | English or Hindi | Regional papers are not available outside the listed states; English is the only medium at centres abroad. |
One more consideration for parents. MBBS in India is taught in English, as is the FMGE for students who return from abroad, so a student who can manage the English paper gains a year's head start on medical textbooks. A student who cannot yet read a Biology question comfortably in English should choose the bilingual booklet and use the English column to build that vocabulary through the preparation year. Either way, medium has no effect on the merit list, the All India Quota or state counselling.
Does the NEET medium affect counselling, cut-offs or state quota?
No. The bulletin states that candidates qualifying for NEET (UG) are eligible for the All India Quota and other quotas under the state governments and institutes irrespective of the medium of the examination, subject to other eligibility criteria. The cut-off is one percentile list for everyone: in 2026 the unreserved cut-off was the 50th percentile, which fell at 213 marks out of 720, and 11,21,185 candidates qualified. There is no separate merit list for Hindi or regional candidates and no language quota in any counselling. The medium you tick affects only the paper you receive on exam day. The NEET 2027 eligibility criteria guide covers age, subjects and attempts, and the NEET hub links counselling, cut-offs and the college predictor.

What is the NEET 2027 exam pattern in every language?
The 2026 pattern, which carries into 2027 unless a new bulletin changes it, is 180 compulsory questions in 180 minutes, each with four options and one correct answer. Physics and Chemistry carry 45 questions and 180 marks each; Biology, split into Botany and Zoology, carries 90 questions and 360 marks. A correct answer earns 4 marks, a wrong answer costs 1 mark and an unanswered question scores 0. The exam is held in a single shift from 2 pm to 5 pm, with an extra hour for eligible PwBD candidates; the 21 June 2026 re-examination ran to 5.15 pm to include exam formalities. NEET 2026 was a pen-and-paper exam, and the NTA has issued nothing yet on the mode for 2027; our explainer on NEET 2027 and computer-based testing tracks what is official. The marking scheme and subject split are the same in all 13 mediums, and our guide on total marks in NEET walks through the arithmetic.
What happens if you pick the wrong NEET language?
If you notice before the correction window, change it there; that is the only route. If you notice after it, sit the exam in the medium printed on the admit card. A regional or Hindi booklet still carries the full English paper, so an English-medium student who ticked Hindi by mistake can answer from the English column and loses nothing. The reverse is harder: an English-only booklet has no regional text, so a student who studied in Tamil and ticked English must manage with English. Reading the confirmation page on the day you submit the form removes this risk, because the medium is printed there.
If your regional medium is not offered in the state you now live in, choose Hindi or English at a centre in your current state rather than travelling to your home state only for the language, because centre cities are limited to your state of permanent or present address.
