NEET 2027 Chapter-Wise Weightage: Subject and Unit Split
21 Oct 2026
12 min read
Biology carries 360 of the 720 marks in NEET, Physics and Chemistry 180 each. Human Physiology is the heaviest unit in the syllabus at six NCERT chapters. Here is the chapter-wise weightage by subject and by unit, and the revision order it gives you.

The real NEET chapter-wise weightage starts with the subject split: Biology 360 of 720 marks, Physics 180, Chemistry 180. Below that sit 50 syllabus units, and the material behind each one is very uneven. Biology's ten units carry 32 NCERT chapters. The full unit breakdown is below.
NEET 2027 chapter-wise weightage: key takeaways
Biology is half the paper. It carries 90 of the 180 questions and 360 of the 720 marks, as many as Physics and Chemistry together, so it earns half the revision time.
Human Physiology is the single biggest unit in the syllabus. Six of Biology's 32 NCERT chapters sit inside it, roughly 19 per cent of all the Biology reading.
Organic and Physical Chemistry carry eight units each. Inorganic carries four, so two thirds of Chemistry revision belongs to Organic and Physical.
Physics splits evenly across the two years. Fourteen chapters in Class 11 and 14 in Class 12, so a dropper cannot treat either year as the lighter one.
Accuracy beats coverage. A wrong answer costs one mark against four for a correct one, so a unit you half know is worth less than a unit you leave.
The 2025 and 2026 syllabus are identical. Same 50 units, same names, so a plan built on the current syllabus should hold for 2027.
NEET chapter-wise weightage by subject
This is the split every revision plan is built on, and it is printed in the official bulletin.
Subject | Questions | Marks | Share of the paper | Syllabus units |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Physics | 45 | 180 | 25 per cent | 20 |
Chemistry | 45 | 180 | 25 per cent | 20 |
Biology (Botany and Zoology) | 90 | 360 | 50 per cent | 10 |
Total | 180 | 720 | 100 per cent | 50 |
Notice what that does to a Biology unit. Ten units share 360 marks, so each Biology unit is worth roughly 36 marks on average. Twenty Physics units share 180, so each is worth about nine. A Biology unit is worth four Physics units before you have read a single chapter.
The pattern comes from the NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin, and the unit list from the syllabus notified by the National Medical Commission. Our NEET exam pattern page and the NEET hub carry the rest.
Biology chapter-wise weightage, unit by unit
Biology is the one subject where the syllabus units and the NCERT chapters line up exactly. That makes the chapter count per unit a real measure of how much work each one holds.
Syllabus unit | NCERT chapters | Share of Biology reading | Class |
|---|---|---|---|
Human Physiology | 6 | 19 per cent | 11 |
Diversity in Living World | 4 | 13 per cent | 11 |
Structural Organisation in Animals and Plants | 3 | 9 per cent | 11 |
Cell Structure and Function | 3 | 9 per cent | 11 |
Plant Physiology | 3 | 9 per cent | 11 |
Reproduction | 3 | 9 per cent | 12 |
Genetics and Evolution | 3 | 9 per cent | 12 |
Ecology and Environment | 3 | 9 per cent | 12 |
Biology and Human Welfare | 2 | 6 per cent | 12 |
Biotechnology and Its Applications | 2 | 6 per cent | 12 |
Human Physiology is the heaviest unit in the entire syllabus. Six chapters covering breathing, circulation, excretion, locomotion, neural control and chemical coordination, all in Class 11 Biology. If you revise one unit properly before any other, this is generally the one.
At the other end, Biology and Human Welfare and Biotechnology carry two chapters each. They are short, they are in Class 12, and they are usually the fastest marks in the paper to secure late in a revision cycle.

Chemistry chapter-wise weightage, by branch
Chemistry does not divide by class as neatly, so the useful split is by branch. The syllabus groups its 20 units under three headings, and the group sizes tell you where the time goes.
Branch | Syllabus units | Share of Chemistry | What it mostly asks for |
|---|---|---|---|
Physical Chemistry | 8 | 40 per cent | Numericals and formulas |
Organic Chemistry | 8 | 40 per cent | Mechanisms and reasoning |
Inorganic Chemistry | 4 | 20 per cent | Recall and periodic trends |
Organic and Physical together are four fifths of Chemistry. Inorganic is the smallest branch but the easiest to score once it is memorised, which is why it is often left to the last month and still works.
The Physical units run from Some Basic Concepts in Chemistry through Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Chemical Thermodynamics, Solutions, Equilibrium, Redox and Electrochemistry, to Chemical Kinetics. The Inorganic units are Classification of Elements and Periodicity, p-Block, d- and f-Block, and Co-ordination Compounds.
Physics chapter-wise weightage, across the two years
Physics is the most evenly spread subject in NEET, which is why it rarely rewards skipping.
Class | NCERT chapters | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
Class 11 | 14 | Measurement, mechanics, rotational motion, gravitation, properties of matter, thermodynamics, kinetic theory, oscillations and waves |
Class 12 | 14 | Electrostatics, current electricity, magnetism, induction, alternating current, electromagnetic waves, optics, dual nature, atoms, nuclei and semiconductors |
Fourteen chapters each way, so neither year is the light one. The twentieth syllabus unit, Experimental Skills, has no chapter of its own and comes from the practical work across both years. It is the unit students most often forget exists.
What to revise first, using the chapter-wise weightage
Work the order, not the clock. This sequence follows the weightage above.
Human Physiology, all six chapters. The heaviest unit in the syllabus and the one that carries the most Biology marks. Finish it before anything else in a short revision window.
Genetics and Evolution, then Ecology. Three chapters each, heavily asked, and both reward reading the NCERT lines rather than solving.
Organic Chemistry mechanisms. Eight units, and the reasoning carries across questions in a way that recall does not.
Physics mechanics from Class 11. The chapters most other Physics questions lean on, so the return is higher than the chapter count suggests.
Inorganic Chemistry last. Four units, mostly recall, and it holds best when revised close to the exam.
Biotechnology and Biology in Human Welfare to finish. Two chapters each, quick to secure, and a good way to end a cycle with marks banked. Our NEET study tools page helps track what is done.

How to build your own chapter-wise weightage from mock tests
The table above tells you how much material sits in each unit. Your own papers tell you where you are losing marks, and that is the number that actually changes your score.
Track marks lost by unit across five or six full papers, in one sheet. After the fifth paper the pattern is usually obvious, and it is rarely what a student expects. Most people lose more in two or three units than in all the rest combined.
Work the 2020 question papers while you do it, because they are the ones published officially. You can find them in the National Testing Agency NEET archive, and our NEET previous year questions section collects them. Our guide on mock test strategy covers how to read a paper properly afterwards.
What changed in the NEET paper in 2025
This matters if you are reading an older weightage table, because the paper it was counted from is not the paper you will sit.
Until 2024 the paper carried 200 questions, with an optional Section B in each subject where candidates chose 10 out of 15, and extra time to match. A public notice dated 25 January 2025 ended that. From that year the paper returned to 180 compulsory questions in 180 minutes, with no optional choice. You can read the National Testing Agency notice on the question paper pattern in full.
Marking is four for a correct answer, minus one for a wrong one, and zero for a blank. With every question compulsory, accuracy matters more than it did under the old structure. Our page on total marks in NEET goes through the scoring.
Will the NEET 2027 syllabus be the same?
Most likely yes, on the record so far. The 2025 and 2026 syllabus documents carry the same 50 units with the same names, so the content has held steady for two cycles.
The rationalised syllabus came in for 2024, after school boards trimmed their own syllabi during the pandemic years and did not restore them. The National Testing Agency explains that in its frequently asked questions on the revised NEET syllabus. The same document notes that a few syllabus topics are not in the current NCERT books, kept because several state boards still teach them.
The 2027 notification has not been issued yet, so build on the current syllabus and adjust if it moves. Our page on NEET UG 2027 preparation tracks it, and our NEET syllabus guide carries the full unit list.

How many students appear, and how many qualify
Worth seeing before you decide how much a chapter-wise weightage table is going to change for you.
Year | Registered | Appeared | Qualified |
|---|---|---|---|
2025 | 22,76,069 | 22,09,318 | 12,36,531 |
2026 | 22,79,743 | 19,99,895 | 11,21,185 |
These come from the National Testing Agency's key data points of NEET (UG) over the years, which also splits them by category and gender.
Around 11 lakh candidates qualified in 2026, against roughly 1.2 lakh MBBS seats. Our page on MBBS seats in India against NEET numbers sets out that gap, and the NEET qualifiers against MBBS seats web story shows it in one screen.
Common mistakes with chapter weightage
Dropping a unit before the first full pass. Weightage is a revision tool. Used before you have read everything once, it only tells you what to neglect.
Treating the three subjects equally. Equal hours means a quarter of the effort on half the paper, which is the most common planning error we see.
Counting chapters instead of marks lost. A short unit you keep getting wrong costs more than a long unit you have secured.
Ignoring Experimental Skills. It is a listed Physics unit with no chapter, so it falls out of most revision plans entirely.
Trusting two chapter-wise weightage tables that disagree. Where published counts differ, go back to the syllabus and the marks split, which do not.
What if NEET 2027 does not go your way
Check where the score actually places you. Our college predictor and the NEET cutoffs page work from closing ranks rather than guesswork.
Look at what a seat has historically needed. Our page on the marks required for MBBS in NEET covers it by category.
Weigh another attempt honestly. There is no cap on attempts, and our page on low marks in NEET walks through both sides.
Consider studying medicine in Europe. A NEET qualification is still needed for Indian citizens who go abroad for an undergraduate medical course, so the preparation counts either way.

NEET 2027 chapter-wise weightage: the bottom line
Biology is half the paper, Human Physiology is its heaviest unit, Organic and Physical Chemistry are four fifths of Chemistry, and Physics is split evenly across both years. Plan in that order and you are working with the real weighting rather than against it.
One line worth saying once. The exam authority does not publish a question count per chapter, so any table that shows exact question numbers per chapter, anywhere, is an estimate rather than a published figure. The splits above come from the official syllabus and the NCERT contents pages, both of which can be counted.
