Biology carries 360 of the 720 marks in NEET and most of that syllabus sits inside the NCERT text. Ten NCERT books cover the whole course, free to download. Here is the subject-wise list, the supplements students actually use, and what each one is for.

Biology carries 360 of the 720 marks in NEET, with Physics and Chemistry on 180 each. Most of that syllabus sits inside the NCERT text. The best books for NEET 2027 start with the ten NCERT volumes, which are free to download, and a short list of supplements does the rest.
Best books for NEET 2027: key takeaways
Ten NCERT books cover the whole course. Physics and Chemistry come in two parts for each class, Biology is a single volume per class, and all ten are free on the council's own site.
Biology needs the reading, not the shelf. It is half the paper at 360 of 720 marks, and most of those answers are in the NCERT text itself rather than in a second book.
Physics is where the extra book earns its place. The NCERT exercises are too few for the question style, so one problem book is worth owning.
Chemistry splits three ways. Physical, Inorganic and Organic each need a different kind of support, which is why one Chemistry book rarely covers it.
The NCERT Exemplars are strong practice with one check. They were not revised when the textbooks were, so a few chapters in them no longer exist in the current books.
A handful of topics sit outside NCERT. They were kept in the syllabus because several state boards still teach them, so they are worth knowing about.
Best books for NEET 2027, subject by subject
This is the working list. NCERT is the spine in every subject, and the supplement column is what students most often add on top.
Subject | Core book | Most used supplements | What the supplement is for |
|---|---|---|---|
Physics | NCERT Physics Part I and Part II, Classes 11 and 12 | Concepts of Physics by H. C. Verma; Understanding Physics by D. C. Pandey | Problem solving and practice volume |
Chemistry (Physical) | NCERT Chemistry Part I, Classes 11 and 12 | A numerical practice book | Calculation speed, not more theory |
Chemistry (Inorganic) | NCERT Chemistry Part I and Part II | Concise Inorganic Chemistry by J. D. Lee | Reference for periodic trends and blocks |
Chemistry (Organic) | NCERT Chemistry Part II, Classes 11 and 12 | Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd | Mechanisms and reasoning |
Biology | NCERT Biology, Classes 11 and 12 | Trueman's Elementary Biology, Volumes 1 and 2 | Extra detail and question sets |
Buy one supplement per subject, not three. Most books for NEET are bought in threes and finished in none. Our NEET hub and our NEET syllabus guide cover what each book has to carry.
The ten NCERT books for NEET, class by class
The titles below are as NCERT prints them. Every one is free to read or download on the council's own site.
Book | Class | Subject |
|---|---|---|
Physics Part I | 11 | Physics |
Physics Part II | 11 | Physics |
Chemistry Part I | 11 | Chemistry |
Chemistry Part II | 11 | Chemistry |
Biology | 11 | Biology |
Physics Part I | 12 | Physics |
Physics Part II | 12 | Physics |
Chemistry Part I | 12 | Chemistry |
Chemistry Part II | 12 | Chemistry |
Biology | 12 | Biology |
All ten sit on the NCERT e-textbook portal, as full books and as single chapters. The current printing carries the reprint year 2026 to 2027. Our page on what an NCERT book is covers the basics for families new to this.

How much reading sits behind each subject
This is the number that decides your timetable.
Subject and class | Structure | Total |
|---|---|---|
Physics, Class 11 | 7 chapters in Part I, 7 in Part II | 14 chapters |
Physics, Class 12 | 8 chapters in Part I, 6 in Part II | 14 chapters |
Chemistry, Class 11 | 6 units in Part I, 3 in Part II | 9 units |
Chemistry, Class 12 | 5 units in Part I, 5 in Part II | 10 units |
Biology, Class 11 | 19 chapters in 5 units | 19 chapters |
Biology, Class 12 | 13 chapters in 5 units | 13 chapters |
Biology is the heaviest read at 32 chapters, and it is also half the paper. Most students own the fewest Biology books and the most Physics books, which is the wrong way round. Weight your books for NEET the way the paper is weighted.
Which books for NEET go beyond NCERT
These are the titles students most often add after NCERT, and what each one is actually good for.
Physics
Physics is where a second book earns its place, because the NCERT exercises are too few for the question style. Concepts of Physics by H. C. Verma, in two volumes, is the usual choice for building problem solving, and it is worth working rather than reading. The Understanding Physics series by D. C. Pandey gives the practice volume on top. Fundamentals of Physics by Halliday, Resnick and Walker is a reference to dip into, not a daily book, and it goes further than NEET asks.
Chemistry
Chemistry splits three ways and so do the books. Concise Inorganic Chemistry by J. D. Lee is the standard reference for periodic trends and the blocks, though more of it sits outside the syllabus than inside it. Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd is the deep reference for mechanisms, and most students pair it with a lighter practice book. For Physical Chemistry, a numerical practice book does more than a second theory text, because the NCERT theory is already enough.
Biology
Biology needs the fewest extra books and the most NCERT reading. Trueman's Elementary Biology, in two volumes, is the common supplement, used for the extra detail and the question sets. An objective question bank is worth owning for the revision months. Anything beyond that competes with time you should be spending on the NCERT text, which is where most Biology answers sit.
Where the marks are, and how to split your reading
Buy and read in proportion to the paper, not to how hard a subject feels.
Subject | Questions | Marks | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
Physics | 45 | 180 | 25 per cent |
Chemistry | 45 | 180 | 25 per cent |
Biology | 90 | 360 | 50 per cent |
Total | 180 | 720 | 100 per cent |
Biology carries as many marks as the other two subjects together. The split is printed in the NEET (UG) 2026 information bulletin, and our page on total marks in NEET goes through the scoring.

NCERT Exemplar: strong practice, with one check
NCERT publishes Exemplar Problems for Physics, Chemistry and Biology in both classes, free on the NCERT Exemplar Problems portal. They are harder than the textbook exercises and they are good practice for the question style.
One check before you use them. The Exemplars were not revised when the textbooks were rationalised, so a few chapters in them are no longer in the current books.
Class 12 Chemistry. The first Exemplar unit is Solid State, which is not in the current Class 12 Chemistry textbook.
Class 12 Biology. The first Exemplar chapter is Reproduction in Organisms, which is not in the current Class 12 Biology textbook.
Class 11 Biology. The Exemplar is numbered to the older 22-chapter book, so its chapter numbers run ahead of the current 19-chapter one.
Compare the Exemplar chapter against the textbook contents page first, and you will not lose an evening on removed material.
The topics that sit outside the NCERT books
A small part of the syllabus is not in the current NCERT text, and it is worth knowing which part.
The National Testing Agency answers this in its frequently asked questions on the revised NEET syllabus. Those topics were kept because several school boards still teach them, and the answer names Maharashtra, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Nagaland, Manipur and the National Institute of Open Schooling.
So NCERT is the base, and a supplement or a state board text fills the small remainder. This is the practical reason to own one extra book per subject rather than none.
How the 50 syllabus units map onto the books
Usefully in Biology, loosely in the other two.
Biology lines up cleanly. The two Biology books number their units I to V and VI to X, so the ten syllabus units map onto them directly. This is why Biology planning feels easier than the rest.
Chemistry recombines. The syllabus has 20 units against 19 across the four Chemistry books. Its unit on redox reactions and electrochemistry draws on one Class 11 unit and one Class 12 unit.
One Physics unit is not a chapter. Experimental Skills is the twentieth Physics unit and comes from the practical work in both years rather than from a chapter.
Read the syllabus beside the contents page. Our NEET syllabus hub keeps the unit list in one place.

How to choose books for NEET without wasting money
The order matters more than the titles. Buying in the wrong order is the usual way a family pays twice.
Start with the free NCERT downloads. All ten are on the council's portal at no cost. Buy printed copies only if you prefer paper.
Read one NCERT chapter before buying anything for that topic. You cannot tell which support you need until you see where the marks go.
Buy one supplement per subject. Three books for one subject usually means finishing none of them.
Check the Exemplar chapter against the textbook contents. A thirty second check saves a wasted session.
Give Biology the reading hours. Half the marks sit there, and most of them sit in the NCERT text. Our guide on how to prepare for NEET covers the daily split.
Add a question bank in the final year. Practice volume helps once the syllabus is finished, not before. Our guide on mock test strategy covers the timing.
Books for NEET that are not worth buying
A second theory book for a subject you have not finished once. The problem at that stage is coverage, and a new book restarts it.
An edition that predates the 2024 syllabus revision. It carries topics that are no longer examined, which costs study time rather than saving money.
A fourth question bank. Past papers and full mock tests do more with the same money. Our NEET previous year questions section and our NEET study tools are free.
A book bought in the last two months. At that point the gain is in revision and timing, not in new material.
Are the NCERT books for NEET free to download?
Yes. The e-textbook portal serves full books and single chapters with no login, no fee and no registration. The booklets listing what was removed in 2022 are marked for free distribution.
Free to read is not free to republish. Every book carries an all rights reserved notice and a watermark on each page, which is worth knowing if you are handed photocopied coaching material.

What was removed from the NCERT books for NEET
NCERT published two booklets in May 2022 listing the content removed from each book, one for Class 11 textbooks and one for Class 12 textbooks. They are indexed by book, so you can look up a single title in a minute.
Every current textbook also carries a short section in its opening pages explaining the rationalisation, with the five grounds used for removal. If you are working from an older printed copy, read that section first. Our page on NEET UG 2027 preparation tracks anything that changes for the next cycle.
How many people you are reading against
Scale is the reason the reading matters more than the shelf.
Year | Registered | Appeared | Qualified |
|---|---|---|---|
2025 | 22,76,069 | 22,09,318 | 12,36,531 |
2026 | 22,79,743 | 19,99,895 | 11,21,185 |
These come from the National Testing Agency's key data points of NEET (UG) over the years. Around 11 lakh candidates qualified in 2026, against roughly 1.2 lakh MBBS seats.
Everyone in that queue owns the same ten free books. What separates them is how many times those books have been read. Our page on MBBS seats in India against NEET numbers sets out the gap, and the NEET qualifiers against MBBS seats web story shows it in one screen.
Best books for NEET 2027: the bottom line
Read the ten NCERT books properly, keep the syllabus open beside them, and add one supplement per subject where your own test papers show you need it. Give Biology half the hours, because it carries half the marks.
One thing worth saying once. The National Medical Commission and the National Testing Agency do not publish a recommended book list, so every list you read, this one included, is a judgement built on what the syllabus actually asks for. That is also why the NCERT text stays the safest place to start.
