How to Prepare for NEET 2027: Syllabus and Study Plan

How to prepare for NEET comes down to three things: learn the NMC syllabus, master the exam pattern and test yourself often. NEET UG is the national entrance exam for MBBS, with 180 questions and 720 marks in three hours. Students aiming for 2027 should also practise on a computer, because the exam moves to computer-based testing.

Key Takeaways

  • NEET UG has 180 compulsory questions: 45 in Physics, 45 in Chemistry and 90 in Biology, for 720 marks. A correct answer earns 4 marks and a wrong answer loses 1, as set out in the NTA NEET UG 2026 information bulletin.

  • The syllabus is notified by the National Medical Commission (NMC), the regulator for medical education in India. It has 20 units in Physics, 20 in Chemistry and 10 in Biology, listed in the NMC syllabus for NEET UG 2026.

  • The Union Education Minister said on 15 May 2026 that NEET UG will move to computer-based test (CBT) mode from 2027, replacing the OMR answer sheet (News On AIR, 15 May 2026).

  • Biology carries 360 of the 720 marks, so it deserves the largest share of daily study time.

  • The qualifying score moves with the paper. The general cut-off was 213 marks in 2026, against 144 in 2025 (NTA key data points of NEET UG over years).

  • There is no upper age limit and no limit on attempts in the bulletin. A candidate must be at least 17 by 31 December of the exam year.

NEET UG at a glance

NEET UG (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test, Undergraduate) is the single entrance exam for MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses in India. It is run by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Our NEET UG hub page brings together the syllabus, cut-offs, counselling and tools in one place. The table below is the starting point for how to prepare for NEET.

  • Correct or most appropriate answer: plus 4 marks.

  • Wrong answer: minus 1 mark. This is negative marking, so a blind guess can lower your score.

  • Unanswered question: zero marks.

  • If a question is dropped or has no correct option, NTA gives every candidate 4 marks for it.

What is in the NEET syllabus?

The National Medical Commission Undergraduate Medical Education Board finalised the NEET UG 2026 syllabus by public notice on 22 December 2025. The NTA information bulletin confirms there is no change from the previous year. The full unit list is in the NMC syllabus for NEET UG 2026, and our NEET syllabus page sets out every topic.

Subject

The units follow the Class 11 and Class 12 science courses. Most students use the NCERT textbooks, the standard school books for these classes, as their base. Map every NCERT chapter to a syllabus unit before you start. This list is the base of how to prepare for NEET. Any unit not in the NMC list can be dropped from your plan.

Who is eligible to sit NEET UG?

The eligibility rules below are from the NEET UG 2026 information bulletin. Our web story on NEET age limit and attempts sums them up in short.

  • Age: at least 17 years on or before 31 December of the year of the exam. For 2026, that meant born on or before 31 December 2009.

  • Upper age limit: none. The bulletin cites an NMC letter of 9 March 2022.

  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Biotechnology, and English, in Class 12 or an equivalent exam. Students who studied these as additional subjects after Class 12 are also allowed.

  • Class 12 students: those still awaiting results can sit NEET UG. They must pass Class 12 by the first round of counselling to take a seat.

  • Nationality: Indian nationals, NRIs, OCI cardholders and foreign nationals can apply. NRI and OCI candidates upload a certificate from the Indian mission in their country.

  • Studying abroad: Indian citizens and OCI cardholders who plan to study MBBS in a foreign medical college must also qualify NEET UG.

What NEET score should you aim for?

Qualifying NEET UG means scoring at or above a set percentile. A percentile shows where you stand against everyone who sat the exam. For General and EWS candidates it is the 50th percentile. For OBC, SC and ST candidates it is the 40th. For candidates with benchmark disabilities it is the 45th (General and EWS) or 40th (reserved categories). These rules are in the information bulletin.

The 2026 result shows how tight the top end is. Only 10,160 candidates scored 600 or more out of 720. 90,780 scored 500 or more (NTA NEET UG 2026 result press release). Use our NEET cut-off page for closing ranks and the futureMBBS College Predictor to see which colleges a score can reach. That turns a vague goal into a mark you can plan around, which is the core of how to prepare for NEET.

Why does the NEET UG 2027 computer-based test change preparation?

NEET UG 2026 was held in pen and paper mode. On 15 May 2026, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said NEET UG will be held in computer-based test (CBT) mode from next year, instead of the OMR-based mode (News On AIR, 15 May 2026). In a CBT, each question appears on a screen and you pick the answer with a mouse. In the OMR mode, you shade a bubble on paper.

Three habits change. You read questions on a screen, not in a printed booklet. Rough work sits on a separate sheet, away from the question. And you track time with an on-screen clock. Taking full mock tests on a computer, not only on paper, builds this comfort well before exam day. This is the biggest change in how to prepare for NEET for the 2027 cohort.

Our web story on the NEET UG 2027 computer-based test explains the switch in short. The NEET UG 2027 preparation guide sets out a plan for the full cycle.

How to prepare for NEET subject by subject

Start from the syllabus, then the textbook, then questions. Read each chapter more than once, including diagrams, tables and small in-text facts. Then test it with past questions straight away. Our sorted NEET previous year question papers help with this step.

NEET Biology preparation

Biology is 90 questions and 360 marks, half the paper. Read the Class 11 and 12 chapters line by line, because questions often test exact terms, examples and diagram labels. Revise human physiology, genetics, reproduction and ecology on a fixed cycle, since these units are long and easy to forget.

NEET Chemistry preparation

Chemistry is 45 questions and 180 marks. Physical chemistry needs daily numerical practice. Organic chemistry needs reaction maps you redraw from memory. Inorganic chemistry is mostly recall, so short, frequent revision works better than long single sittings.

NEET Physics preparation

Physics is 45 questions and 180 marks. It is where time runs out most easily. Learn each formula with its units, then solve timed sets of numericals. Mark questions that took more than two minutes and redo them a week later.

How to prepare for NEET with a daily study routine

A fixed routine you keep every day works better than long, irregular days. Set a measurable target each morning, such as one chapter plus 50 practice questions. "Study Biology" is too vague to check. The table shows one way to divide a study day.

Time block

Focus

Morning

Revise the previous day's topics before starting anything new

Mid-morning to afternoon

New syllabus work, rotating Biology, Chemistry and Physics across the week

Late afternoon

Practice questions or a timed test on the chapters covered

Evening

Check the test, update the error log and revise weak areas

Before bed

Light revision only, then a regular sleep time

A preparation cycle can run a year or more. Plan short breaks and a weekly lighter day so the routine lasts. For parents, the most useful support is practical: a quiet place to study, regular meals and no extra pressure after each test score.

How to prepare for NEET with mock tests

Use mock tests as a check-up, not a verdict. The analysis after a test improves your score more than the test itself. Our guide to a NEET mock test strategy covers this in detail. Here is how to prepare for NEET with tests, step by step.

  1. Take a short topic test straight after each chapter, so gaps show while the chapter is fresh.

  2. Move to part-syllabus tests as more chapters are done, to practise switching between topics.

  3. Add full 180-question, three-hour mocks in the final months. For 2027, take them on a computer to match the CBT format.

  4. Keep an error log. Note every wrong answer, the reason (concept, careless slip or guess) and the fix. Review it weekly.

  5. Track negative marks. If guesses cost more than they earn, stop guessing on questions where you cannot rule out two options.

How to prepare for NEET: mistakes to avoid

  • Collecting many reference books before the textbook chapters are clear. This usually means finishing none of them.

  • Studying without a written plan. Without daily targets, weak chapters get skipped for months.

  • Covering new topics without revision. Biology facts fade fast unless revised on a schedule.

  • Avoiding weak chapters. These are where the quickest marks are usually found.

  • Taking mock tests without analysing them. A score with no review changes nothing.

  • Cutting sleep for extra hours. Tired study days lower recall and accuracy in tests.

How to apply for NEET UG

Registration happens only online, on neet.nta.nic.in. Knowing how to prepare for NEET includes getting the application right. The steps below follow the NEET UG 2026 information bulletin.

  1. Register with a valid mobile number and email address, and note the application number.

  2. Fill in the application form, including the question paper language and exam city choices. The language cannot be changed later.

  3. Upload a photograph, signature and the documents asked for, such as a category certificate if you claim one.

  4. Pay the fee online by net banking, card or UPI. The fee is not refunded.

  5. Download and keep the confirmation page and proof of payment.

What if NEET does not go to plan?

Qualifying gives eligibility, not a seat. All India Quota seats are filled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and state quota seats by each state's counselling authority. Our NEET counselling guide explains each round.

Students who do not get a seat can repeat NEET UG, since there is no attempt limit. Over 93 per cent of the 138 candidates who scored above 690 in 2026 were sitting NEET UG for the first time (NTA result press release, 16 July 2026), so a repeat year needs a clear plan for how to prepare for NEET again, not just more hours. Another path is MBBS abroad, which also needs a NEET UG qualifying score. Our web story on options after qualifying with no MBBS seat and our MBBS abroad guide cover both routes.

Conclusion

How to prepare for NEET comes down to four habits. Work from the NMC syllabus unit by unit. Keep a fixed daily routine with measurable targets. Test every chapter early and analyse every mock. And, for 2027, practise full papers on a computer. Steady months of this matter more than a few long days.
