MBBS in Slovakia: Comenius vs Jessenius vs UPJŠ Fees

MBBS in Slovakia is offered in English by three public medical faculties, and their annual tuition runs from €11,500 to €13,000. The bigger difference is the entrance exam. Comenius and Jessenius test online through Scio, while UPJŠ Košice holds a 200-question paper on campus with a usual pass mark of 75 per cent.

Key Takeaways

  • Fees: Comenius Bratislava and UPJŠ Košice charge €13,000 a year (about Rs. 14.1 lakh) for new students. Jessenius Martin charges €11,500 a year (about Rs. 12.5 lakh).

  • Seats: the English General Medicine programmes plan to admit 240 students at Comenius, up to 150 at Jessenius and 210 at UPJŠ.

  • Exams: all three test only biology and chemistry. Comenius and Jessenius run online Scio tests. UPJŠ tests in person in Košice.

  • Language: teaching is in English at all three. Comenius also timetables 48 hours of Slovak in each of the first four semesters, so students can talk to patients.

  • India rules: NEET UG is compulsory, and the NMC rules on course length, internship and licensing apply to all three faculties in the same way.

This post compares the three faculties side by side. For the full country overview, including cities, curriculum and career paths, see our MBBS in Slovakia country page and the wider MBBS in Slovakia for Indian students 2026 guide. All three faculties are among the 23 futureMBBS partner universities, three of them in Slovakia.

Which three faculties offer MBBS in Slovakia in English?

Slovakia has three public faculties that teach General Medicine in English. Each one awards the MUDr. degree (Doctor of General Medicine) after six years. The MUDr. is the Slovak equivalent of an MBBS.

Jessenius is often described as a separate university. It is not. Jessenius is a faculty of Comenius University, so both Bratislava and Martin use the same Comenius e-application system and the same university fee rules.

How fees stay fixed at Comenius and UPJŠ

Comenius guarantees the same tuition each year for the standard six years of General Medicine, so a student admitted in 2026 pays €13,000 every year (Comenius admission process page).

UPJŠ sets its rate by year of admission. Its 2026/27 fee notice lists €13,000 for students admitted in 2025/26 or 2026/27, €12,500 for those admitted in 2024/25, and €10,500 for earlier groups. Tuition is paid in two instalments, due 31 August 2026 and 1 March 2027 (UPJŠ tuition fee notice 2026/2027).

Jessenius lists tuition of €11,500 for one academic year of two semesters, paid before the semester starts in mid-September (Jessenius applicant FAQ). That makes Martin about €9,000 cheaper than Bratislava or Košice over six years, roughly Rs. 9.8 lakh.

One-time fees before admission

  • Comenius: €99 per application, non-refundable, paid before the exam deadline. Applying to both medicine and dentistry means paying twice (Comenius admission fee rules).

  • Jessenius: €70 per application. A new €70 fee is due each time a student re-registers for a later exam date (Jessenius applicant FAQ).

  • UPJŠ: €30 for the application and entrance exam, non-refundable for every applicant (UPJŠ entrance examination page).

MBBS in Slovakia entrance exams: how each faculty tests

No Slovak faculty admits on Class 12 marks alone. Each one runs its own exam in biology and chemistry. Physics is not tested at any of the three.

Comenius University entrance exam

Comenius uses a test delivered by Scio, a testing company. The paper has 100 biology and 100 chemistry questions, with 180 minutes in total. Each question has four options and one correct answer (Comenius entrance examination page).

From 2026 there is no negative marking. A wrong answer, or more than one answer ticked, scores zero. Every question comes from the faculty's own preparation booklets, which hold 500 biology and 500 chemistry questions. A student who works through the booklets has seen every possible question before exam day.

Comenius offered three dates for 2026/27: 19 March, 2 June and 6 August. The faculty tells applicants from outside the EU to take only the March or June date, because the student visa takes several weeks, and it recommends March (Comenius admission process page).

Jessenius Faculty of Medicine entrance exam

Jessenius also runs its exam online with Scio, in biology and chemistry. The faculty publishes chemistry and biology guides with sample questions from earlier intakes (Jessenius application process page).

Jessenius is the most flexible of the three on retakes. A student who fails can register again for the next date, with a new application and fee. Each sitting uses a different set of questions (Jessenius applicant FAQ).

UPJŠ Košice entrance exam

UPJŠ holds a written test at the faculty in Košice. For 2026 the dates were 12 August and 5 September. The test has 200 questions, 100 in biology and 100 in chemistry, in one sitting of two and a half hours (UPJŠ entrance examination page).

The scoring is different from Comenius. Each question has four options, and anywhere from none to all four can be correct. Each question scores 0 to 4 points, so the maximum is 800. There are no minus points. The usual pass mark is 75 per cent, which means about 600 of 800. UPJŠ publishes its entrance exam questions on the faculty website.

A student may sit the UPJŠ exam only once per admission year for General Medicine. That makes the August date the main attempt for most applicants.

Language of teaching for MBBS in Slovakia

All three faculties teach the full six-year General Medicine programme in English. That matters for India, because the NMC only licenses graduates whose foreign degree was taught in English (NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021).

Slovak is still part of the course. Comenius's study plan lists Slovak Language 1 to 4 in the first two years, with 48 hours of classes in each semester (Comenius General Medicine study plan). Patients in Slovak hospitals speak Slovak, so these classes are what let a student take a history on the wards in later years.

On English proof, the rules differ. Comenius states that it does not ask for an English language certificate (Comenius admission process page). UPJŠ says applicants should have a good command of English, since the whole course is taught in it (UPJŠ entrance examination page).

Who is eligible for MBBS in Slovakia, and who cannot apply?

An Indian student needs to meet two sets of rules: the Slovak faculty's rules and India's rules.

  • School education: a completed Class 12 certificate that counts as secondary education at European Qualifications Framework level 4. Students still in Class 12 can apply and send the certificate later (Comenius admission process page).

  • NEET UG: Indian citizens who want to practise in India after a foreign MBBS must qualify NEET UG. The NEET result acts as their eligibility certificate (NMC Screening Test Regulations, 2018 amendment).

  • Fitness to study: all three faculties ask for a doctor's certificate confirming the student is fit for university study (Jessenius application process page).

  • Entrance exam: passing the faculty's own biology and chemistry test is required at all three.

Who cannot use the degree in India: a student who studies in Slovakia without qualifying NEET UG cannot later register to practise in India. A student who does not complete the course within ten years of joining also falls outside the NMC rules.

Comenius and Jessenius accept everything online. UPJŠ wants a printed, signed form and documents posted to the Study Department in Košice before the deadline, which was 29 July 2026 for the August exam (UPJŠ entrance examination page).

Nostrification for Indian students

Nostrification is the Slovak process that recognises a foreign school certificate as equal to Slovak secondary education. Students from the EU and a short list of other countries can skip it. India is not on that list, so Indian students need nostrification by enrolment day (Comenius admission process page). The request goes to the Regional School Administration Office in Slovakia.

What NMC rules mean for an MBBS in Slovakia degree

The NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021 apply in the same way to Comenius, Jessenius and UPJŠ (NMC FMGL Regulations 2021, listed on the NMC rules and regulations page). A graduate needs:

  • Course length: at least 54 months of study. The Slovak General Medicine programme runs six years.

  • Internship abroad: 12 months of internship at the same foreign institution that awards the degree, with no part of the training done in India or a third country.

  • English medium: the degree must be taught in English, which all three faculties do.

  • Licence in Slovakia: registration with the body that licenses doctors in the country of study, on the same footing as a Slovak citizen.

  • India steps: pass the screening test, today the FMGE, then a 12-month supervised internship in India.

The FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) is the exam that NBEMS runs for doctors who studied abroad (NBEMS FMGE page). Our guide to the FMGE exam explains the pattern, and the FMGE pass rate by country web story shows how graduates of each country performed. Before paying any fee, use our NMC and WDOMS recognition checklist on the faculty you choose. Jessenius lists its entry in the World Directory of Medical Schools on its General Medicine programme page.

MBBS in Slovakia key dates for the 2027 intake

The 2026 intake has closed. Comenius enrolled its new students on 14 September 2026, and the last UPJŠ exam was on 5 September 2026. Jessenius has already published its 2027 dates, and its application platform opens on 1 December 2026 (Jessenius application process page).

Friday 6 August 2027

23 July 2027

In 2026 Comenius used March, June and August, and UPJŠ used August and September. For a student needing an Indian visa, the earlier dates leave the most time.

What if you miss or fail a Slovak entrance exam?

  • Fail at Jessenius: register again for the next date once the current one has passed, with a new application and €70 fee.

  • Fail at Comenius: a student can register only once per programme per academic year, so the next chance at Comenius is the following year.

  • Fail at UPJŠ: one attempt per admission year applies, so the next chance at UPJŠ is also the following year.

  • Miss a Comenius date through illness: the faculty can move the registration only if told at least one day before, or on the day with a doctor's note.

  • Admitted but no nostrification by enrolment: the faculty cannot enrol the student, so start this process as soon as the offer arrives.

Each faculty runs its own admission, so a student can apply to more than one. Comenius in March or June, then Jessenius in June or August, then UPJŠ in August or September is one way to spread the attempts across the year.

Conclusion: which Slovak faculty fits which student?

Jessenius in Martin is the lowest-cost option at €11,500 a year and the only one that allows retakes within a year. Comenius in Bratislava has the most places and a test drawn entirely from published booklets, which rewards steady preparation. UPJŠ in Košice has a demanding 75 per cent pass mark but a long record of English teaching since 1992.

All three lead to the same MUDr. degree and face the same NMC rules in India. For help choosing and applying, see our MBBS in Slovakia country page or the MBBS in Europe overview.
