Comenius University Faculty of Medicine

Comenius University in Bratislava was founded in 1919 and is the oldest and largest university in Slovakia. Its Faculty of Medicine, established on 21 September 1919, was the very first faculty of the university and remains the country's leading medical school. Comenius University is ranked #662 in the QS World University Rankings 2027 and is consistently the top-ranked university in Slovakia. The General Medicine (MBBS) programme is a six-year, full-time degree taught entirely in English, with about 240 places offered to international students for 2026/27. Admission is through the faculty's own SCIO entrance examination in biology and chemistry, rather than NEET, though Indian students still need to qualify NEET to obtain the eligibility certificate the National Medical Commission (NMC) requires for studying MBBS abroad and for licensing later. The degree is recognised across the European Union and listed by the NMC and the World Directory of Medical Schools, so graduates can pursue licensing in India, the EU and beyond.

How to Apply

Admission Process for MBBS

Admission to General Medicine at Comenius University Faculty of Medicine is through the faculty's own SCIO entrance examination in biology and chemistry, which can be taken online or in person in Bratislava. Indian students must also qualify NEET to obtain the NMC eligibility certificate required to study MBBS abroad, but admission to Comenius itself is decided by the entrance exam, not by NEET rank.

Academic Qualification

Applicants must have completed Class 12 (or equivalent secondary education) with Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and Indian students must have qualified NEET for NMC eligibility. Strong biology and chemistry knowledge is key for the SCIO entrance exam.

Requirements

Applicants must sit and pass the Comenius Faculty of Medicine SCIO entrance examination. Applications are submitted through the faculty's online system, directly or through an approved representative.

  • Entrance Exam

    A SCIO test in Biology (100 questions) and Chemistry (100 questions) over 180 minutes, with no negative marking, taken online in March, June or August or in person in Bratislava in August.

  • NEET (for Indian students)

    Indian students must qualify NEET to obtain the NMC eligibility certificate required for studying MBBS abroad and for the screening examination on return.

Entrance Examination

Admission is based on the SCIO entrance examination in biology and chemistry, with applicants ranked by their scores, not on category-wise minimum marks.

Prominent Figures of Comenius University Faculty of Medicine

With more than a century of history, Comenius University Faculty of Medicine has produced influential physicians and scientists, and the wider Comenius University has educated leading figures in Slovak public life.

Jan Vilček

Jan Vilček earned his medical degree at Comenius University in Bratislava in 1957 and became one of the most influential biomedical scientists of his generation. A pioneer of interferon research, his work on antibodies against tumour necrosis factor helped lead to the anti-TNF drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. He became a professor at New York University and a major philanthropist for biomedical science.

Lukáš Plank

Lukáš Plank is a Slovak pathologist and professor within Comenius University, known for his work in oncopathology and haematopathology. He has been a leading figure in modern Slovak diagnostic pathology and in training new generations of pathologists.

Peter Osuský

Peter Osuský is a Slovak physician and university professor who became a long-serving member of the Slovak parliament. He represents the many Comenius medical graduates who have combined clinical medicine with wider public and academic roles.

Zuzana Čaputová

Zuzana Čaputová studied law at Comenius University and served as the fifth President of Slovakia from 2019 to 2024, the first woman and the youngest person to hold the office. While not a medical graduate, she reflects the standing of Comenius University as the country's leading institution.

FMGE & NExT Details

To practise medicine in India after graduating from Comenius University, Indian students follow a clear pathway set by the National Medical Commission. NEET qualification is required from the start to obtain the NMC eligibility certificate.
