Jobs After MBBS Abroad: 3 Career Paths for 2026 Graduates

Jobs after MBBS abroad are doctor posts and medical careers that open up once you finish a foreign medical degree, and for an Indian graduate of a European university there are three main routes: practise in India after the FMGE and an Indian internship, take a hospital job in Europe, or qualify for a third country such as the USA, UK, Australia or the Gulf.

The good news is that you don't have to pick your jobs after MBBS abroad on day one. A European degree that meets the National Medical Commission (NMC) rules keeps the India route open, and the years you spend in Europe give you the language, the clinical exposure and the contacts for the other two. This guide explains each route to jobs after MBBS abroad in plain words, with the official rules behind it.

Key Takeaways

  • Three routes, one degree. Jobs after MBBS abroad fall into India, Europe and third countries, and a degree that meets NMC rules keeps all three open.
  • The India route has four checkpoints. A course of at least 54 months in English with a 12 month internship at the same university, a licence in the country of study, the FMGE (or NExT once it replaces it) and a 12 month supervised internship in India.
  • The FMGE has a clear target. It is one paper of 300 multiple choice questions in two parts, and you pass with 150 marks out of 300.
  • Europe is short of doctors. In 2025, 22 EURES countries reported a shortage of specialist doctors and none reported a surplus, including Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus and Romania.
  • The European workforce is ageing. 41.8% of specialist doctors in EURES countries were aged 50 or older in 2024, so many posts will open as they retire.

What are the main jobs after MBBS abroad?

The main jobs after MBBS abroad are clinical posts in India after NMC registration, resident and specialist training posts in European hospitals, and licensed doctor jobs in a third country. Next to these sit non-clinical careers such as research, public health and medical industry roles, which suit graduates who want to stay close to medicine.

Here is how the three clinical routes compare at a glance:

Route Where you work What you clear first Our detailed guide
India Government and private hospitals, then PG training FMGE (or NExT), 12 month supervised internship, NMC permanent registration Medical registration in India after MBBS in Europe
Europe Hospitals in the country you studied in or another European country Local licence, language level, work or residence permit Medical licence in Europe after MBBS
Third country USA, UK, Australia, UAE and others That country's licensing exam USMLE, PLAB and NHS, AMC, DHA

When students plan their jobs after MBBS abroad, most keep India as the base plan and add a European or global option during their studies. That's a smart way to use your six years: you study for one exam while you build the language or experience for another.

How do you start working as a doctor in India after MBBS abroad?

You start working as a doctor in India once the NMC grants you permanent registration. Under the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, that needs a qualifying foreign degree, a licence in your country of study, the screening exam and a 12 month supervised internship in India.

The rules are strict, but they are also clear, which makes the India route to jobs after MBBS abroad easy to plan for. Here is the full sequence, in order:

  1. Qualify NEET UG before you go. The FMGE October 2026 information bulletin repeats the rule that Indian citizens who started a foreign medical degree on or after May 2018 must qualify NEET, and a NEET result stays valid for three years. Check the NEET qualifying marks for your category and the NEET 2027 eligibility criteria if you are still preparing.
  2. Study a course that meets the NMC rules. It must last at least 54 months, be taught in English, include the mandatory subjects and a 12 month internship at the same foreign university, and be completed within ten years of joining.
  3. Become eligible for a licence where you studied. You must be registered, or competent to be licensed, in the country that awards your degree, on the same terms as its own citizens.
  4. Clear the screening exam. Today that is the FMGE, conducted by NBEMS; the regulations name the National Exit Test (NExT) or another test the NMC mandates.
  5. Complete 12 months of supervised internship in India. You apply to the NMC for it after the exam.
  6. Apply for permanent registration. This is the licence that lets you practise modern medicine independently in India.

Our guides on the FMG internship and registration process and what the FMGE exam is walk through steps 4 to 6 in detail, and NExT explained covers the exam that is meant to replace the FMGE.

Which jobs open up in India once you are registered?

Once you hold NMC permanent registration, the jobs after MBBS abroad in India are the same kinds of doctor posts an Indian graduate applies for: medical officer and resident posts in government hospitals, posts in private hospitals and clinics, and the route into postgraduate training through NEET PG.

A few of our guides go deeper into each option. Government jobs after MBBS lists the main recruitment routes, jobs after MBBS compares private hospital work and private practice, and our NEET PG counselling guide explains how PG seats are allotted. For a sense of pay, NEETsheet's guide to doctor salary in India breaks down what doctors earn at different stages.

Can you get a doctor job in Europe after studying there?

Yes. A doctor job in Europe after studying there is a realistic goal, because European countries report a lasting shortage of doctors. In the European Labour Authority's 2025 analysis, 22 EURES countries reported a shortage of specialist medical practitioners and not one reported a surplus. You still need the local licence, the language and a permit.

The European Labour Authority's 2025 report on labour shortages and surpluses counted 2,617 reported shortages across occupations and describes health and care, which employs around 25 million people, as a sector with particularly severe and persistent shortages. Its occupational fiche on specialist medical practitioners gives the full list:

Labour market status, 2025 Countries
Shortage of specialist doctors Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czechia, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden
Surplus of specialist doctors None reported

Look at that list from an Indian student's side, because it shapes your jobs after MBBS abroad. Czechia, Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus and Romania, all popular for English-taught MBBS, are on it. You'd be graduating into the very health systems that are asking for more doctors.

The WHO Regional Office for Europe says every country in the region is struggling to recruit and retain enough health and care workers with the right mix of skills, and 53 countries adopted a Framework for action on the health and care workforce for 2023 to 2030.

What do you need for a hospital job in Europe?

You need three things: a licence from the country's medical authority, the local language at the level it asks for, and the right to work there. Stakeholders quoted by the ELA name language requirements and administrative delays as the main hurdles in recognition, so the earlier you start on them, the smoother the move.

Start with our guides on the medical licence in Europe, learning the local language during MBBS in Europe and, for Germany, the Fachsprachprüfung for doctors. For permits, see the EU Blue Card for doctors and the job seeker visa after MBBS in Europe. Country guides on working as a doctor in Poland and Ireland show how the steps play out in practice.

Which countries in Europe need doctors most?

The countries that need doctors most are those where many specialists are close to retirement. Across EURES countries, 41.8% of specialist doctors were aged 50 or older in 2024, and the share is far higher in Bulgaria (65%), Greece (60%), Lithuania (55%) and Poland (53%), per the ELA specialist fiche.

Share of specialist doctors aged 50 or older, 2024 Bulgaria 65 percent, Greece 60 percent, Lithuania 55 percent, Poland 53 percent and the average across EURES countries 41.8 percent of specialist medical practitioners were aged 50 or older in 2024. Specialist doctors aged 50 or older (2024) Bulgaria 65% Greece 60% Lithuania 55% Poland 53% EURES average 41.8% Orange: countries with English-taught MBBS popular with Indian students. Bar length is proportional to the share.

Some systems already rely heavily on doctors trained elsewhere: foreign-trained doctors make up 94% of physicians in Cyprus and 43% in Ireland, per the same fiche. For an international graduate looking at jobs after MBBS abroad, that's a sign of health systems that are used to welcoming doctors from abroad. Our post on the doctor shortage in Europe maps both shortage lists country by country, and doctor salary in Europe shows what those posts pay.

After graduation, the next move might be home to India, to a hospital in Europe or further afield.

Which jobs open up outside India and Europe?

Outside India and Europe, jobs after MBBS abroad mean passing the licensing exam of your target country: the USMLE for the USA, PLAB and GMC registration for the UK, the AMC exams for Australia and the DHA licence for Dubai. Each has its own steps, costs and timelines, so choose early and plan around them.

We have a separate guide for each: USMLE after MBBS in Europe, NHS training after MBBS in Europe, the AMC exam after MBBS in Europe and the DHA exam after MBBS in Europe. A European degree is a strong base for all of these jobs after MBBS abroad, because you train in English alongside students from many countries.

What non-clinical jobs can an MBBS abroad graduate do?

An MBBS abroad graduate can also build a career in research, public health, medical writing, pharmaceutical and health technology companies, or teaching. These jobs after MBBS abroad use your medical degree without a hospital rota, and some, like a PhD, start best in the country where you studied.

Our guide to non-clinical jobs for doctors in Europe covers the main fields, and PhD after MBBS in Europe explains the research route. If you want to specialise in Europe instead, the PG roadmap in Europe and specialist training in Europe show how long it takes.

How should you plan your career while you study?

Plan your career in stages: protect your India eligibility from the start, pick a second route by about the third year, and use your clinical years to build the language, exam preparation and experience it needs. That way your jobs after MBBS abroad are ready to apply for when you graduate, instead of starting from zero.

  1. Year 1: keep copies of your NEET result, admission letter and every transcript, and confirm your course meets the NMC rules on duration, English teaching and internship.
  2. Years 1 to 3: take the local language seriously from the first semester; it helps on hospital wards in the clinical years and is the base for a European job.
  3. Year 3: decide on your second route (Europe, USA, UK, Australia or the Gulf) and read that country's licensing rules.
  4. Years 4 to 6: study for the FMGE or NExT alongside your clinical subjects, and for your second route's exam if it allows early attempts.
  5. Final year: finish your internship, collect your degree and licence documents, and apply for the screening exam or the foreign licence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What jobs can I get after MBBS abroad?

After MBBS abroad you can work as a doctor in India once you clear the FMGE and a 12 month supervised internship and get NMC registration, take a hospital post in Europe with the local licence and language, or pass the licensing exam of a country such as the USA, UK, Australia or the UAE. Research and industry roles are open too.

Can I do a government job in India after MBBS abroad?

Yes, once the NMC grants you permanent registration. That needs a qualifying foreign degree, a licence in your country of study, the FMGE or NExT and a 12 month supervised internship in India. Permanent registration lets you practise modern medicine independently in India, and you can then apply for government doctor posts.

Is it easy to get a doctor job in Europe after MBBS there?

Europe has strong demand: in 2025, 22 EURES countries reported a shortage of specialist doctors and none a surplus. You still need the local medical licence, the language at the required level and a work or residence permit, so starting the language early in your degree makes the move much smoother.

How many marks do I need to pass the FMGE?

You need at least 150 marks out of 300. The FMGE is one paper of 300 multiple choice questions in two parts of 150, taken on the same day. The October 2026 session is on 31 October 2026, and NBEMS plans to declare the result by 30 November 2026.

Do I need NEET to work in India after MBBS abroad?

Yes. Indian citizens who started a foreign medical degree on or after May 2018 must have qualified NEET, and the NEET result is valid for three years from its declaration. The FMGE bulletin treats the NEET result as your eligibility certificate, so qualify NEET before you join a university abroad.
