South Africa has a small group of long-established, world-ranked medical faculties, all accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). They award the six-year MBChB in English, but admit only a very limited number of international students each year.

The MBChB in South Africa is a six-year, English-medium degree combining basic sciences and early clinical exposure, followed by clinical years in teaching hospitals, and then (for those practising in South Africa) internship and community service.

Important: MBBS in South Africa is a direct-entry MBChB after Class 12 (some faculties, such as Wits, also run a graduate-entry GEMP). In South Africa the degree is followed by a two-year internship and a one-year community-service placement. This is not the 12-month internship at the same university that the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021 ask for, so the degree does not lead to practice in India.

Academic Qualification
Applicants need excellent Class 12 results in the sciences, an evaluation of their qualification by the South African Matriculation Board, the National Benchmark Test (NBT) and English proficiency. NEET UG is not part of admission here, and because this degree does not meet the NMC's rules, NEET UG does not open a route to practise in India from it.

Age Requirement
Candidates must meet the following criterion at the time of admission:
- Minimum age 17Applicants are generally at least 17 by the start of the course; there is no fixed upper age limit.
Entrance & Application Requirements
Applicants complete the NBT and a Matriculation Board evaluation, meet the English requirement and, at some faculties, attend an interview.
NBT + Matriculation Board
The National Benchmark Test plus a Matriculation Board certificate of exemption are required for admission to South African medical faculties.
NEET-UG
NEET UG is not part of admission here, and because this degree does not meet the NMC's rules, NEET UG does not open a route to practise in India from it.
Practising in India: A South African MBChB does not meet the NMC's rules for practising in India. The six-year course is long enough, but graduates then do a two-year internship at accredited hospitals and a year of community service (South African Government), not the 12-month internship at the same university that the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021 ask for. Foreign nationals are placed in internship posts only after all South African citizens and permanent residents, and only 2 foreign nationals were placed between 2019 and 2024 (parliamentary reply, 7 March 2024). Without that internship there is no full HPCSA registration. South Africa is also not covered by the FMGE exemption for postgraduates from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA.

Study Visa
Student Visa Overview
International students study in South Africa on a study visa (study permit). Once you have an offer, you apply through the South African High Commission / VFS in India, showing your admission, funds, medical cover and character documents.
Secure an offer from an HPCSA-accredited university; the official admission letter is required for the study-visa application.
Arrange your Matriculation Board evaluation, Class 10 and 12 certificates, passport, passport photos, proof of funds and a medical / radiological report.
Register with a South African medical-aid scheme (mandatory for the study visa) for the duration of your studies.
Submit the study-visa application with your admission letter and documents to the South African High Commission / VFS Global in India.
Provide biometrics and a police clearance certificate, and complete any verification requested.
Travel to South Africa, register at your university, and renew the study visa each year for the duration of the course.

How to Practise
Your Path After the MBChB in South Africa
After the MBChB
Finish the six-year MBChB at an HPCSA-accredited South African university, including the clinical years.
Register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as an intern. Foreign nationals are placed in internship posts only after all South African citizens and permanent residents, and only 2 were placed between 2019 and 2024.
Complete a two-year internship at accredited South African hospitals under HPCSA supervision.
Complete a one-year community-service placement to gain full HPCSA registration. This route does not lead to practice in India: the degree does not meet the NMC's FMGL Regulations 2021.
After full HPCSA registration, pursue registrar / specialist training in South Africa through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA).
Alternatively, prepare for licensing exams such as the USMLE (USA) or PLAB (UK) to train abroad.
Start clinical practice or enter a registrar / PG training programme in your chosen specialty.
