South Africa has a small group of long-established, world-ranked medical faculties, all accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA). They award the six-year MBChB in English, but admit only a very limited number of international students each year.

The MBChB in South Africa is a six-year, English-medium degree combining basic sciences and early clinical exposure, followed by clinical years in teaching hospitals, and then (for those practising in South Africa) internship and community service.

Important: MBBS in South Africa is a direct-entry MBChB after Class 12 (some faculties, such as Wits, also run a graduate-entry GEMP). In South Africa the degree is followed by a two-year internship and a one-year community-service placement; international graduates returning to India instead complete the FMGE / NExT and Indian internship requirements.

Academic Qualification
Applicants need excellent Class 12 results in the sciences, an evaluation of their qualification by the South African Matriculation Board, the National Benchmark Test (NBT) and English proficiency. Indian students must also qualify NEET-UG if they plan to return to India.

Age Requirement
Candidates must meet the following criterion at the time of admission:
- Minimum age 17Applicants are generally at least 17 by the start of the course; there is no fixed upper age limit.
Entrance & Application Requirements
Applicants complete the NBT and a Matriculation Board evaluation, meet the English requirement and, at some faculties, attend an interview.
NBT + Matriculation Board
The National Benchmark Test plus a Matriculation Board certificate of exemption are required for admission to South African medical faculties.
NEET-UG (for India)
National Eligibility cum Entrance Test — mandatory for Indian students who plan to return to India, and required for later FMGE / NExT eligibility.
For Students Planning to Return to India: NEET-UG is required because the NMC makes it compulsory for Indian students abroad. Under the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations 2021, the qualification must meet the required length and be completed with internship in the same country, after which you must clear the FMGE (or NExT) to practise in India.
