Indian students can apply for MBBS in Finland, but the route is very different from the English-taught programmes most families expect. An Indian Class 12 certificate makes you eligible to apply, since Finland accepts a foreign qualification that gives access to university in your home country. You then need to prove Finnish (or Swedish) language skills and pass the national medical entrance exam, which is written in Finnish or Swedish.

The competition is intense. In spring 2026, medicine had 10.5 applicants for every place, the highest of any field in Finland, according to the Finnish National Agency for Education.

Medical Universities in Finland

Medical universities in Finland are five public universities that award the Licentiate of Medicine (Lääketieteen lisensiaatti). There are no private medical schools. The list comes from the joint admissions site of the Finnish medical faculties. Medical schools worldwide are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS).

First-year places are small. In autumn 2024 the University of Helsinki took 160 students (119 on the Finnish track and 41 on the Swedish track), the University of Turku 160 and the University of Eastern Finland 174, according to each university's announcements.

Tampere's medical faculty is part of Tampere University. It is sometimes wrongly listed as Tampere University of Applied Sciences, which does not teach medicine.

MBBS in Finland: Language of Instruction

MBBS in Finland is taught in Finnish at four universities and in Finnish or Swedish at the University of Helsinki. No university runs the medical degree in English. The University of Eastern Finland states that "there is no English track for medicine in Finland", and the University of Helsinki programme page lists the teaching languages as Finnish and Swedish.

This matters twice for an Indian student. First, you must learn Finnish well enough to follow lectures, pass exams and talk to patients. Second, the NMC only recognises foreign medical degrees taught in English, which is explained further below.

MBBS in Finland Fees for Indian Students

MBBS in Finland fees are zero for tuition. Finland introduced tuition fees for non-EU students in autumn 2017, but these apply only to degree programmes taught in languages other than Finnish or Swedish, as the Finnish Government confirms. Medicine is taught in Finnish or Swedish, so no one pays tuition for it.

For comparison, English-taught programmes at the University of Helsinki charge non-EU students EUR 13,000 to EUR 18,000 a year, according to the university's fees page. Medicine is not one of them.

MBBS in Finland Eligibility for Indian Students

MBBS in Finland eligibility has three parts for an Indian applicant:

• School qualification: a Class 12 certificate that makes you eligible for university in India is accepted, according to the Finnish medical faculties' eligibility page.

• Language proof: Finnish (or Swedish for the Helsinki Swedish track), shown for example through the national YKI test at level 4 in all four parts. There is no English route, as set out on the language requirements page.

How Admission to Medicine in Finland Works

Admission to medicine in Finland runs through one national joint application on the Opintopolku portal (studyinfo.fi). The steps below follow the official application guide.

1. Learn Finnish or Swedish to the level the faculties require, and pass the language test before the deadline.

2. Apply on Opintopolku in the spring joint application. For the 2027 intake, the window is 9 March to 23 March 2027, according to the University of Helsinki.

3. Sit the entrance exam. Just over half of the places go on Finnish school grades, but only Finnish, IB and European school grades are scored. Indian school marks are not, so Indian applicants compete through the exam. In 2026 it was a 4.5-hour computer exam on 25 May: 3 hours of biology and chemistry, then 1.5 hours of physics, based on the Finnish upper secondary syllabus.

4. Accept your place and apply to the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) for a student residence permit.

Around 70% of places are kept for people applying to university for the first time, according to the selection rules.

MBBS in Finland Course Duration and Structure

MBBS in Finland takes six years. The degree is the Licentiate of Medicine, worth 360 ECTS credits. At Tampere, the first three and a half years combine theory and practice, followed by clinical rotations in hospitals and primary care, as set out in the Tampere curriculum.

After graduating, a doctor applies to Valvira, the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health, for the licence to practise in Finland. Graduates apply online through Valvira.

Cost of Living in Finland for Medical Students

The cost of living in Finland for a student permit is set by the Finnish Immigration Service. You must show EUR 800 a month, or EUR 9,600 in your bank account for studies of a year or more, according to Migri. This figure rose from EUR 560 on 1 November 2024. Over six years, living costs alone come to roughly EUR 57,600, or about ₹63 lakh.

Is MBBS from Finland Valid in India?

MBBS from Finland is not valid for practising in India. The NMC's Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 set four conditions for the course itself: at least 54 months of study, a 12-month internship in the same foreign institution, a degree "with medium of instructions in English", and the subjects listed in the regulations. A Finnish Licentiate of Medicine is taught in Finnish or Swedish, so it fails the English-medium condition.

This means a student who finishes medicine in Finland cannot sit the licensing exam in India and register as a doctor here. The degree is valuable inside Finland and across the EU, but not as a route back to India.
