How to Choose the Right European Medical School 2026

How to choose the right European medical school starts with India's rules, not the brochure. The course must meet the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021: at least 54 months, taught in English, with a 12-month internship at the same university. Only then compare fees, admission route, language and FMGE results.

Key takeaways: choosing a European medical school

  • NMC rules come first. The degree must last at least 54 months, be taught in English, include a 12-month internship at the same foreign university, and lead to a licence to practise in that country.

  • NEET UG is compulsory for India. Since May 2018, an Indian student who joins a medical course abroad must qualify NEET UG to sit FMGE later.

  • All training stays at one university. NMC rules say no part of the course or internship can be done in India or a third country. Rotations abroad can break this rule.

  • Fees differ widely. At our 23 partner universities, tuition for 2026/2027 runs from EUR 10,000 to EUR 24,250 a year.

  • FMGE decides practice in India. FMGE is the screening exam a foreign medical graduate passes before working in India. Nationally, 23.94% passed in December 2025, roughly one in four.

Steps: how to choose the right European medical school

  1. Qualify NEET UG. Without a qualifying score, you cannot sit FMGE later.

  2. Check the course against NMC rules. At least 54 months, taught in English, with a 12-month internship at the same university.

  3. Check the WDOMS entry. Search the medical faculty by name and country on WDOMS.

  4. Ask where clinical training happens. Every rotation and the internship should stay at the home university.

  5. Compare tuition and living costs. Use each university's own fee page for 2026/2027.

  6. Match the admission route to your profile. Entrance exam, marks and interview, or a NEET exemption.

  7. Look at FMGE results for the country. Use the NBEMS country tables, not single success stories.

What does the NMC require from a European medical school?

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is India's medical regulator. Its Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021 (FMGL) set the conditions a foreign degree must meet before a graduate can register in India. They were notified on 18 November 2021 and apply to students who joined a course abroad after that date. Our full MBBS in Europe hub page covers each country in detail.

NMC condition

What it means when you choose a medical school in Europe

Course of at least 54 months

The medical degree itself must run at least four and a half years. European General Medicine programmes usually run six years.

12-month internship at the same institution

The internship or clinical clerkship must be done at the university that awards the degree, on top of the course.

English medium

The degree must be taught in English. A course that switches to the local language part way through does not meet this rule.

Subjects equal to Indian MBBS

The course must cover the subjects of Indian MBBS, with hands-on training in Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry and other clinical areas.

Licence in that country

The graduate must be registered to practise in the country that awarded the degree, on the same terms as its citizens.

Whole course outside India, in one place

The entire course, training and internship must be done at the same foreign institution. No part can be done in India or another country.

Finish within ten years

The course must be completed within ten years of joining.

After returning, the graduate passes FMGE and completes a 12-month supervised internship in India. Our summary of the latest NMC rules for MBBS abroad explains each condition, and the NMC rules and regulations page holds the official notices.

How do you check a European medical school is listed on WDOMS?

The World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) is a global list of medical schools. It is run jointly by the World Federation for Medical Education (WFME) and FAIMER. Search the university by name and country. Make sure the entry names the medical faculty you will actually join, not only the wider university.

A WDOMS entry shows that a school exists as a recognised medical school. It does not, on its own, prove that a course meets the NMC rules above. You still need the duration, language, internship and same-institution checks. Our guide on how to check NMC and WDOMS recognition walks through both checks step by step.

Which clinical training rules matter when choosing a European medical school?

Clinical years are where many families get caught out. The NMC requires all training and the internship at the same foreign institution. Some universities offer final-year rotations in other countries. These can be valuable, but for an Indian student they can break the same-institution rule.

  • Rotations in another country. The University of Nicosia places some students in Germany, Switzerland, the UK or the USA in years 5 and 6, with an extra fee of EUR 3,000 to EUR 6,000 a year. An Indian student aiming for FMGE should keep every rotation at the home university.

  • Exchange semesters. An Erasmus+ exchange semester at another university also counts as training outside the home institution. Our guide to Erasmus exchange for MBBS students in Europe explains the trade-off.

  • The internship year. Ask the university in writing whether the final year includes a 12-month internship or clinical clerkship at its own teaching hospitals.

How much does language matter at a European medical school?

The degree must be taught in English to meet NMC rules. Patients in clinical years speak the local language, though. So medical faculties in Europe usually add local-language classes to the early years. These help students talk to patients and take a history on the wards.

Entry rules on English also differ. Comenius University Bratislava, Semmelweis, Pécs and Charles University First Faculty need no English certificate, while Poznań and the University of Nicosia ask for IELTS 6.5. Our guides to MBBS in Europe without IELTS and the local language for MBBS in Europe cover each university.

How do fees compare between European medical schools?

Each university sets its own tuition. The table shows 2026/2027 fees from the universities' own pages. Rupee figures use the European Central Bank rate of EUR 1 = Rs. 108.82 on 30 September 2026.

Living costs add to tuition. Charles University puts Prague at about EUR 550 a month in a dormitory, up to EUR 1,000 in private housing (Charles University, costs of living). Rīga Stradiņš University suggests at least EUR 1,200 a month in Riga, including rent (RSU, life in Riga). Our tuition fees page and the guide to the cost of living in Europe for Indian MBBS students give full totals.

Which admission route suits you at a European medical school?

European universities use one of three routes. Your marks, NEET score and English level decide which suits you best.

Admission route

Examples from our partner universities

What it involves

Entrance exam

Comenius Bratislava, Semmelweis, Pécs, Szeged, Charles University, Masaryk, Zagreb

LSMU Kaunas

An online test of 30 Biology and 30 Chemistry questions, waived for a NEET UG score of 650 or more (LSMU Medicine admission page)

Our guide to MBBS entrance exams in Europe explains each test format.

What do FMGE results show for European medical schools?

FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) is run by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS). Nationally, 6,709 of 36,037 candidates passed in June 2025 (18.62%) and 10,264 of 42,868 passed in December 2025 (23.94%). The country tables in the NBEMS FMGE Performance Report 2025 show European countries with small numbers of candidates:

What if you choose the wrong European medical school?

  • No qualifying NEET score. A student who joined after May 2018 without qualifying NEET UG cannot sit FMGE, so cannot practise in India.

  • Course shorter than 54 months, or not in English. The degree does not meet the FMGL rules, so the graduate cannot get permanent registration in India.

  • Training split across countries. Rotations or an internship outside the home university break the same-institution rule.

  • Need to move university. Transfers are possible in some cases but carry their own NMC conditions. Our guide to medical university transfer to Europe explains them.

Conclusion: how to choose the right European medical school

Start with the NMC checklist: a qualifying NEET UG score, a course of at least 54 months in English, a 12-month internship and every year of training at the same university. Then compare tuition, living costs, the admission route and FMGE results. If you want help matching universities to your NEET score and budget, you can book a free consultation with our team.

Frequently asked questions about choosing a European medical school

How do I check if a European medical school is valid for India?

Check the course against the NMC Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations, 2021. It must last at least 54 months, be taught in English, include a 12-month internship at the same university and lead to a licence in that country. Also check the medical faculty is listed on WDOMS, the World Directory of Medical Schools.

Is NEET required to study at a European medical school?

Yes, if you plan to practise in India. The NMC Screening Test Regulations, amended in 2018, require every Indian citizen joining a medical course abroad on or after May 2018 to qualify NEET UG. Without a qualifying score, the graduate cannot sit FMGE, the screening exam for foreign medical graduates.

Is a WDOMS listing enough to choose a medical school?

No. WDOMS, run by WFME and FAIMER, lists medical schools worldwide, but a listing does not show that a course meets NMC rules. You still need to check the 54-month duration, English teaching, the 12-month internship at the same university and that all training stays at that one university.

Can I do clinical rotations in another country during MBBS in Europe?

Not if you want to practise in India. The NMC FMGL Regulations, 2021 require the entire course, training and internship at the same foreign institution, with no part in India or a third country. Placements abroad, such as some University of Nicosia rotations, can break this rule.

Which exam do I take after a European medical degree to work in India?

You pass FMGE, the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination run by NBEMS, then complete a 12-month supervised internship in India. In December 2025, 10,264 of 42,868 candidates passed, a rate of 23.94%, so roughly one in four. Graduates aiming elsewhere sit USMLE, PLAB or the European country's own licence exam.

How much does a European medical school cost per year?

At our 23 partner universities, 2026/2027 tuition runs from EUR 10,000 a year at UMF Cluj in Romania to EUR 24,250 at Charles University First Faculty in Prague. That is about Rs. 10.9 lakh to Rs. 26.4 lakh at the 30 September 2026 ECB rate, before living costs.

Do European medical schools teach the local language?

Yes, most do. The medical degree is taught in English, as NMC rules require, but patients in hospital speak the local language. Medical faculties usually add local-language classes in the early years, so students can talk to patients during clinical rotations.

Which European countries does futureMBBS work with?

futureMBBS works with 23 partner universities in nine EU countries: Czech Republic (5), Hungary (4), Poland (3), Slovakia (3), Croatia (2), Latvia (2), Romania (2), Cyprus (1) and Lithuania (1). All are public universities except the University of Nicosia in Cyprus, which is private.
