Introduction

AIIMS Bhopal

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal, is a leading medical institution in India, founded by the Government of India in 2012. It was formed under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) with the aim of developing AIIMS-level medical institutions beyond the capital. It ranked 25th in the NIRF medical institution category for its research and professional practice, graduation outcome, outreach and inclusivity, and learning resources. The institution has a vast campus of approximately 170 acres, offering students advanced learning infrastructure, extensive clinical training at a tertiary care hospital, and highly qualified faculty. Reserving one of the 125 MBBS seats is extremely competitive due to the high NEET cut-off.

Academic Excellence

Why Is AIIMS Bhopal Considered a Good Medical Institute?

Beyond being part of the AIIMS chain, AIIMS Bhopal stands out for its Centre of Excellence status, a rising NIRF rank, a large high-occupancy teaching hospital, strong anatomy and faculty ratios, advanced research infrastructure, and government-funded affordability.

Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases

AIIMS Bhopal has the pride of becoming the 12th institution in India to be designated as a Centre of Excellence for Rare Diseases. Its NIRF ranking is also improving each year — it was 31st in 2024 and has now secured 25th position.

A Large, High-Occupancy Hospital

The institute runs a large tertiary care teaching hospital, AIIMS Bhopal Hospital, with approximately 1,250 beds and a high 97% occupancy rate. The hospital receives roughly 4,000–5,000 patients daily, letting MBBS students observe real clinical cases from the early years of their course.

Strong Anatomy & Faculty Ratios

The cadaver-to-student ratio is 1:12, which supports fundamental surgical and anatomical training. The faculty-to-student ratio is among the best in India — roughly 210+ faculty members for about 687+ students — and faculty are recruited through national selection processes.

Advanced Labs & Research Facilities

Students access advanced laboratories, digital classrooms, simulation centres, and research facilities, including a Regional Virology Lab and a Telemedicine Centre for remote patient care. The Translational Medicine department (founded 2019) focuses on infectious diseases, precision medicine, and tissue engineering.

A Strong Research Output

The institution has published more than 200 research papers in a two-year period and its faculty filed 7 patents in 2023. It has signed MoUs with IIT Indore, IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, and NIT Bhopal to promote research activities.

Affordable, Government-Funded Education

Because the institute is funded by the Government of India, MBBS education is highly affordable compared to private medical colleges. The Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Central Library — a three-storey, fully air-conditioned building seating 250+ students — holds around 11,667 print books, 313 theses and dissertations, and about 5,277 e-books.

  • Best decision of my life

Dr. Aditya Verma — MBBS 2017

The hospital sees 4,000–5,000 patients a day at 97% occupancy, so the clinical exposure from the early years is exceptional. Being an AIIMS, the academics are intense but world-class.

  • World-class clinical training

Dr. Sneha Patel — MBBS 2018

Government-funded fees of a few thousand rupees with AIIMS-level faculty and research facilities make it unbeatable value. The simulation labs and central library are excellent.
