A day in third year at Charles University Prague

Third year is where the wards begin

The First Faculty of Medicine says the first three years are theoretical and pre-clinical, and the second half is clinical. Third year sits on that line.

Pathology first, then a real patient

Third year brings pathology, microbiology and pharmacology. It also brings the first bedside subjects, in medicine and surgery, where a student meets a patient at last.

Czech is a graded subject, not a hobby

Czech runs four practical hours a week across both semesters and ends in an exam. Patients on the ward speak Czech, so the language is part of the training.

The hospitals are spread across the city

Teaching runs through the General University Hospital in Prague, which has taught medical students since 1791, and through Motol, Thomayer and the Na Bulovce hospitals.

The term dates leave very little slack

The winter term runs from 28 September to 18 December 2026. Examinations run to 21 February 2027, and the summer term starts the very next day.

A tram pass costs 130 koruna a month

A student aged 18 to 26 pays 130 koruna for a month of Prague transport, or 1,280 for a year. A hall bed starts at 107 koruna a day.
