Senior Resident vs Junior Resident: The Real Difference
Senior resident or junior resident, explained
Junior resident means a broad speciality student
The Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 are blunt. Students who pursue broad speciality courses, meaning an MD or an MS, are called junior residents.
Senior resident needs the degree already
The National Medical Commission says a senior resident shall hold a postgraduate degree in the respective broad speciality. That one line is the whole difference.
Super speciality trainees are senior residents too
A doctor doing a DM or an MCh, the super speciality degrees, is also called a senior resident, even though they are still a student.
Resident stipend is set at par by rule
Postgraduate students must be paid a stipend at par with students in the state or central government medical institutions in that state or union territory.
The ladder runs junior, senior, super speciality
A super speciality course needs the matching MD or MS first, which the rules call the feeder degree. So the junior resident years are what make you eligible.
Want the RMO comparison as well
Our guide to becoming an RMO doctor sets out how the resident medical officer post differs from the resident grades inside a teaching hospital, and what each one pays.
