RMO Full Form: What a Resident Medical Officer Does

RMO full form and what the job pays

RMO is short for Resident Medical Officer

RMO stands for Resident Medical Officer, a doctor posted in a hospital to look after patients on the ward. It is a job title, not a degree.

An MBBS degree is enough to apply

You need an MBBS degree and the 12-month internship that follows it, set by the NMC Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations, 2021. No postgraduate degree is needed.

Council registration is not optional either

You also need permanent registration with a State Medical Council. Section 34 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 bars anyone unregistered from such a post.

Central government pay starts at Rs. 56,100

The AIIMS Deoghar advertisement of 7 March 2026 and the Safdarjung Hospital notice of 3 June 2026 both put entry pay at Rs. 56,100 a month, Level 10, plus allowances.

State and private pay is set by each hospital

No regulation fixes RMO pay outside central government posts. States and private hospitals set their own, so two RMOs in a city can earn very different amounts.

The NMC does not define an RMO post

The Post Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 define junior resident and senior resident. RMO is in neither, so the title means different things in different hospitals.

Our RMO guide covers the eligibility, the step by step route from MBBS, the hospitals that recruit, the allowances on top of basic pay and where the job leads next.
