NMC seat matrix update: 1,40,664 MBBS seats

The headline number, as of 21 September

NMC's updated seat matrix, issued on 21 September 2026, puts India at 1,40,664 MBBS seats across 839 medical colleges. That is 1,27,028 renewed plus 13,636 increased.

Government colleges outnumber private ones

Government colleges hold 64,121 seats across 447 institutions. Private colleges hold 76,543 across 392. Private colleges are fewer, but they carry the larger share of seats.

Where the 13,636 extra seats came from

The increase splits 2,936 in government colleges and 10,700 in private. It includes 3,850 seats at 41 newly established colleges, 850 government and 3,000 private.

The matrix moved twice in twelve days

The 9 September matrix read 1,40,214 seats across 836 colleges. The 21 September version adds 450 seats and three colleges, so the later figure is the one to quote.

What it means against this year's NEET result

Around 11.21 lakh candidates qualified NEET UG 2026. Against 1,40,664 seats, roughly one qualified candidate in eight can be seated, and government seats cover one in seventeen.

Going above the approved intake is non-compliance

NMC states that any admission beyond a college's approved intake capacity is treated as non-compliance. The matrix is the document that fixes each college's intake.
