New PG medical seats: 5,000 more by 2028-29

The Cabinet cleared it a year ago today

The Cabinet approved 5,000 more postgraduate seats and 5,023 more MBBS seats on 24 September 2025. They arrive in stages between 2025-26 and 2028-29.

The bill comes to Rs. 15,034.50 crore

The centre carries Rs. 10,303.20 crore and the states Rs. 4,731.30 crore, with a ceiling of Rs. 1.50 crore per seat created under the scheme.

PG capacity has grown faster than MBBS

Over the past decade India added 43,041 postgraduate seats, a rise of 143%. MBBS seats rose 127%, or 69,352 seats, so the specialist side grew faster.

The recent five years alone added 29,080

A health ministry update dated 13 February 2026 records 29,080 extra postgraduate seats and 48,563 extra MBBS seats between the years 2020-21 and 2025-26 alone.

The shortage this is meant to close

Community Health Centres are rural government hospitals. Each is meant to have four specialists. In 2016 they needed 22,040 and had 4,192, so one post in five was filled.

Where exactly those specialists are missing

Surgeons were short by 4,626 posts and physicians by 4,585. Paediatricians were short by 4,416 and obstetricians and gynaecologists by 4,225 posts across rural India.
