NEET 2027 CBT: What the Move to Computer-Based Testing Changes

NEET is leaving pen and paper

NEET UG will move from OMR sheets to computer-based testing, with 2027 as the working target. NTA Director General Abhishek Singh confirmed the direction on 14 September 2026: "NEET will also be moving to CBT very soon." A six-member task force chaired by Nandan Nilekani, formed in July 2026, is building the reform. The exam date, the number of shifts and the scoring method arrive with the official notification, which NTA has not yet issued.

Why the mode is changing

NEET UG 2026 was held on 3 May 2026 for over 22.7 lakh candidates and cancelled on 12 May 2026, after a circulated guess paper was found to overlap the real paper by up to 140 questions. The CBI arrested professors, a school headmistress who served as an NTA subject expert, and coaching operators. The re-examination on 21 June 2026 required the Indian Air Force to move question papers to centres.

22.7 lakh candidates, 1.25 lakh a day

NTA's computer-based capacity is approximately 1.25 lakh candidates a day. NEET UG 2026 drew over 22.7 lakh candidates across 551 cities in India, 14 cities abroad and more than 5,400 centres. At current capacity, that is roughly 18 testing days. NMC's own assessment put it at 20 to 30 shifts across a month or more, requiring around 20 separate question papers.

This is what decides your rank

Around 20 question papers cannot carry identical difficulty, so scores are normalised. JEE Main ran 9 shifts in 2026 on exactly this system: the NTA score is 100 multiplied by the number of candidates in a shift scoring at or below you, divided by the total candidates in that shift. Rank stops following marks out of 720 and starts following performance within a shift. Raw-mark cutoff tables and marks-to-rank predictors stop working the way they do today.

The Supreme Court ruling in the way

A Supreme Court ruling on NEET PG directed that the examination be conducted in a single shift, to avoid the arbitrariness that follows when candidates face papers of different difficulty. A multi-shift NEET UG meets that reasoning directly. The question of how a 20-shift examination satisfies a single-shift principle is an open legal question, not only an infrastructure one.

The objection that is eight years old

In July 2026 the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education recorded that computer-based testing could disadvantage candidates from rural areas, economically weaker sections, government schools and regions with low computer literacy. The Health Ministry raised the same digital divide objection in 2018, and NMC has held the pen-and-paper position since. NTA reports to the Education Ministry and NMC to the Health Ministry, which is why this reform has been announced before without arriving.

What a student does now

The NEET UG syllabus is unchanged and NEET UG 2027 carries no notification yet, so preparation continues as planned. Build screen time into practice through mock computer-based tests, so the interface never costs marks. Then plan the wider timeline honestly, because the mode does not move the seat maths: 11.21 lakh candidates qualified in 2026 against 63,296 government MBBS seats, close to 5.6 seats for every 100 qualifiers.
