Migration and Transfer Certificates: What They Are
Migration and transfer certificates, explained simply
Two documents, and two different issuers
The school issues the transfer certificate when a student leaves it. The board or university issues the migration certificate so a student can join another university.
You need it when you cross universities
University rules ask for a migration certificate from anyone who passed the qualifying exam under a different university or board. It shows the old body has no objection.
The deadline is written into the rules
Guru Jambheshwar University of Science and Technology asks for it by 31 January of the year of admission. Miss that and your entry to the exam is suspended automatically.
CBSE stopped printing it in 2025
From the 2025 examinations the Central Board of Secondary Education no longer issues a paper migration certificate. A digital copy is used, and the board charges nothing.
Universities that still charge, charge little
Kerala University of Health Sciences has set Rs. 1,105 for a migration certificate after a medical undergraduate course, and Rs. 2,205 after a postgraduate one.
A duplicate is hard to come by
Several universities will issue the migration certificate once only. A duplicate then needs a sworn affidavit that the original was lost and never used for an admission.
Want to compare India and abroad
Our comparison of MBBS in India and abroad sets out how many seats exist, what each route costs a family over six years, and how admission works on both sides.
