Hostel and Mess in a Medical College: The Real Bill
What hostel and mess actually cost you
The room is nearly free, the food is not
At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi the hostel rent for an MBBS student is Rs. 15 a month. Food runs to around Rs. 3,500 a month.
Other government colleges sit a good deal higher
University College of Medical Sciences in Delhi set rent at Rs. 600 a month in 2023, rising ten per cent a year, with mess charges of Rs. 2,500 a month.
The mess deficit clause catches families
A mess is run at cost. Where the real spend crosses the notified rate, residents pay the difference. That line sits in the same notice as the Rs. 2,500 figure.
Caution money comes back, the rest does not
University College of Medical Sciences takes Rs. 1,000 as hostel caution money and Rs. 2,000 for the mess. Both are one time and refundable. Rent and mess are not.
A bed, a table, a chair, a cupboard
At the All India Institute of Medical Sciences that is the room, with a ceiling fan, a light fitting and one plug point. Bedding is yours, and air conditioners barred.
Sign the inventory before you move in
The hostel asks you to check and sign for what is in the room. Do it on day one, because anything missing later is counted against the student who signed.
