How many MBBS seats are left after NEET UG Round 2

The national picture first

India has 1,40,214 MBBS seats across 836 colleges for 2026-27, with 63,971 government seats in 391 colleges and 76,243 private seats in 445. Around 11.21 lakh candidates qualified NEET UG 2026.

MCC counsels a fraction of that

Round 1 of MCC counselling opened with 31,728 seats. Round 2 opened with 24,244. The drop is what Round 1 absorbed, and the same pattern will shape what Round 3 carries.

How Round 2's 24,244 seats were made up

Round 2 carried 11,302 clear vacancies and 12,283 virtual vacancies, with 659 seats newly added by MCC during the round.

Clear vacancy and virtual vacancy are not the same thing

A clear vacancy is a seat nobody holds. A virtual vacancy is a seat currently held by a candidate seeking an upgrade, which is released only if that upgrade happens. Virtual vacancies are the larger share.

What last year's Round 3 looked like

MCC's 2025 Round 3 opened with 15,797 MBBS and BDS seats, made up of 4,821 clear vacancies, 10,737 virtual vacancies and 139 newly added seats.

When the 2026 Round 3 number arrives

Institutes verify the tentative seat matrix by 21 September 2026, and MCC publishes the Round 3 matrix as registration opens on 22 September.
