Minimum Attendance for MBBS: 75 and 80 Explained
MBBS attendance is counted per subject, not per year. The NMC floor is 75 per cent in theory and 80 per cent in practical, and there is no condonation. Here is how the rule works and what a shortfall costs.
75 per cent theory, 80 per cent practical, per subject
The NMC CBME guidelines of 12 September 2024 set 75 per cent attendance in theory and 80 per cent in practical or clinical work for each subject, in each phase in which that subject is taught.
Four more floors students forget
Foundation Course 75 per cent, AETCOM 75 per cent, Family Adoption Programme visits 80 per cent and electives 75 per cent. Falling short in AETCOM detains you from every subject in that phase, not one.
Internal assessment is the second gate
Attendance alone is not enough. You also need 50 per cent in internal assessment, combined theory and practical, with at least 40 per cent in each separately, to sit the university exam in that subject.
Between 60 and 75 per cent: remedial route
A student above 60 per cent in each component can be given remedial classes between the main exam and the supplementary, then sit the supplementary. Below 60 per cent there is no route into that year's exam.
Detention is not an attempt
An attempt is counted only when you appear for the university exam. A student detained for attendance has lost the year but not one of the four attempts allowed for first professional.
Medical leave does not reduce the count
During the course the NMC text has no exemption for illness; a certificate supports a remedial-class request. In internship, all leave including medical leave is capped at 15 days, and extra days extend the internship.
