MBBS Intern Stipend

A Stipend Is Not Optional

Under the CRMI Regulations, 2021, every MBBS intern must be paid a monthly stipend. The amount is fixed by the appropriate authority, which may be the state government, the university or the institution.

The Case Behind It

The Supreme Court has been hearing Abhishek Yadav and others v. Army College of Medical Sciences since 2022. In September 2023 it directed that college to pay interns Rs 25,000 a month from October 1, 2023.

The Court Lost Patience

In October 2025 the bench told NMC to get up from its slumber, after hearing that over 2,000 interns were unpaid, around 4,000 received half the amount, and about 1,000 were made to return the money to their institutions.

NMC's Latest Count

In June 2026, NMC told the Supreme Court that of 756 undergraduate medical colleges, 573 had no dispute over stipends, 176 were newly established, and 7 were not paying. Show cause notices went to those seven.

Rs 1 Crore Penalties

In March 2026, NMC imposed a penalty of Rs 1 crore each on seven medical colleges for failing to disclose stipend details on its portal despite earlier directions.

No Fees for the Internship Year

In April 2026, NMC clarified that MBBS fees cover only the 4.5-year academic period. Colleges cannot bill tuition for the one-year internship, which is a service period and not teaching.

Where It Stands

The batch of petitions was listed for further hearing on August 24, 2026. Stipend parity for foreign medical graduates is part of the same case.
