Failing a Year in MBBS: The Rules Nobody Explains to You
What happens if you fail a year in MBBS
The supplementary comes in six to eight weeks
A supplementary is the second chance exam after the main university exam. The 2024 curriculum guidelines put it within six to eight weeks of the main result.
Clear it and you keep your own batch
A student who passes the supplementary rejoins the main batch. A student who fails it in first year drops to the junior batch, because there are no supplementary batches.
First year is the one hard gate
A candidate who fails the first professional exam cannot join second year at all. Every subject of first year has to be cleared before the next phase of teaching begins.
Later years let you keep training
Fail the second year exam and you may join third year teaching, but you cannot sit its university exam until you clear. The same gate sits inside third year.
Four attempts, and four years, for first year
No more than four attempts are allowed to pass first year, and first year must be cleared within four years of admission. Not appearing does not count as an attempt.
The outer limit is nine or ten years
The National Medical Commission regulations of 2023 say nobody may stay on the course beyond nine years from admission. Its curriculum guidelines say no graduation after ten.
