FMGE Licence Rule: The Degree Must Work Where You Studied
FMGE eligibility: the licence rule that decides it
Your admission date decides the rulebook
For anyone admitted on or after 18 November 2021, eligibility is judged strictly under the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate Regulations 2021, as amended since then.
One missed provision makes you ineligible
FMGE is the exam a doctor trained abroad must pass to work in India. Anyone who does not meet a provision of those 2021 regulations is declared ineligible to sit it.
The degree must let you practise there
Your medical degree has to be one that lets you register as a doctor in the country where the college sits. That is the test, not the name on the degree.
The Indian Embassy has to confirm it
The Indian Embassy in that country has to confirm the degree lets you register as a doctor there. That check happens before you are allowed to sit the exam.
A later finding cancels the result
If it turns out at any point that the degree does not allow you to register as a doctor in that country, the bulletin says your result and your candidature are cancelled.
Ask this one question before you enrol
Ask the college in writing whether its degree lets a graduate register to practise medicine in that country, and keep the answer. That is what the rule turns on.
Want to know more about FMGE itself
Our FMGE guide covers who must sit the exam, what the eligibility rules say about a course taken abroad, the exam pattern, and the pass rates from recent sessions.
