What FMGE is

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination is the screening test every Indian citizen or OCI who completes a medical degree abroad must pass before practising in India. It is a computer-based test conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences.

The date is out

FMGE January 2027 is scheduled for 9 January 2027. Registration is expected around October to November 2026, with admit cards in January 2027 and results in February 2027. The application fee is Rs 6,195.

Work backwards from that date

A January exam means registration opens roughly three months before, and serious preparation should already be running by then. Students who wait for the notification to begin preparing are choosing a two-month runway for a test built on six years of curriculum.

The number that should set your standard

In FMGE June 2026 the overall pass percentage was 12.78%, confirmed in Parliament. Around 36,300 candidates appeared and roughly 4,600 passed. This is the exam standing between a foreign medical degree and an Indian medical licence.

The detail behind that number

Government data placed in Parliament confirms around 88% of FMGE June 2026 applicants were repeaters, and that freshers passed at more than 35%. The headline measures repeat attempts. First attempts perform nearly three times better, which is why the first attempt should be treated as the attempt.

FMGE is not the last step

After clearing FMGE, a foreign medical graduate must complete a 12-month supervised internship in India and register with a State Medical Council before practising. Separately, NMC intends to replace FMGE with the National Exit Test, so plan for a common and harder standard rather than a permanent screening test.

The rules that decide eligibility

Minimum 54 months of instruction. A 12-month internship at the same foreign institution. The entire course completed abroad at one institution. English medium throughout. Course finished within 10 years of enrolment. Plus NEET qualification. Break one and the licence does not follow the degree.
