The postgraduate bottleneck, in one line

About 2.73 lakh doctors sat NEET PG 2026, the entrance exam for specialist training, against roughly 82,059 seats. Two in three will not get one this year.

More seats are coming, but not this year

The Cabinet approved 5,000 extra postgraduate seats on 24 September 2025, phased across to 2028-29. That eases the ratio over four years, not in this cycle.

The public system is short of doctors

Community Health Centres are rural government hospitals. Figures showed that 22,040 specialist posts were needed there, against only 4,192 posts that had actually been filled.

A medical officer post starts earning now

State health services recruit MBBS graduates directly as medical officers. The post pays from day one and counts as service, which some postgraduate quotas later reward.

Licensing abroad runs as a parallel track

A doctor with an Indian MBBS can sit licensing exams in other countries. Each has its own exam, timeline and cost, and none needs an Indian postgraduate seat.

Non-clinical work is a real career

Public health, health policy, medical writing and clinical research all recruit doctors directly. The degree itself is the qualification in that work, not the specialisation.
