Five specialisations with the strongest case over the next decade

These were picked on numbers, not opinion

Each speciality here is ranked on two things NMC and NBEMS publish, how fast seats are being created, and how large the measured gap is between what India has and what it needs.

1. Critical care medicine

Critical care now holds 574 DrNB seats, more than DM Cardiology at 542, and is the fastest expanding super speciality NBEMS runs. India has 2.3 ICU beds per 100,000 people against 3.6 across comparable Asian units.

2. Oncology, radiation and medical

India needs about 4,034 radiation oncologists and trains from a base near 454 seats a year. Radiotherapy reaches 28.5% of patients who would benefit against an optimal 58.4%, and cancer cases are projected near 1.57 million for 2025.

3. Emergency medicine

Seats rose from 491 to around 655 in a single year, a 33% increase and the fastest growth of any speciality already at scale. India recorded 172,890 road deaths and 462,825 road injuries in 2023.

4. Psychiatry

India has 0.75 psychiatrists per 100,000 people against the 3 that WHO recommends, with a treatment gap between 70% and 92%. Seats grew 22% in 2025-26, one of the largest increases in the matrix.

5. Geriatric medicine

India's population aged 80 and above grows 279% between 2022 and 2050, and the elderly overtake children by 2046. The country currently produces around 20 geriatricians a year from roughly 66 seats.
