Apostille for MBBS Abroad: Documents, Steps and Fees

An apostille is the Ministry of External Affairs sticker that makes your Indian school certificates valid abroad. MEA charges Rs 50 per sticker, and the whole route runs in three official steps.

One apostille works in 130 Hague Convention countries

India has been in the Hague Apostille Convention since 14 July 2005. The HCCH status table listed 130 Contracting Parties on 30 June 2026, including Hungary, Georgia, Poland, Romania and Uzbekistan, so no embassy stamp is needed on top.

Documents MBBS students usually apostille before admission

MEA apostilles educational and personal documents. For MBBS abroad that means Class 10 and Class 12 certificates and marksheets, plus your birth certificate. Each one counts separately, and MEA never apostilles a photocopy, only originals or true copies.

Step 1: your state authenticates the certificate first

MEA apostilles on the strength of a state signing authority's signature, so your document first goes to your state's designated authentication office. CBSE documents from 2014 onwards skip the paper route and are verified online through e-Sanad.

Step 2: submit through one of four MEA agencies

Since July 2012 MEA takes no documents directly from applicants. You hand the original, a photocopy and a passport photocopy to an authorised agency, such as BLS International or IVS Global, in one of 16 cities.

Apostille fees: Rs 140 for a two-page certificate

MEA charges Rs 50 per apostille sticker. The agency adds Rs 84 per document and Rs 3 per scanned page. A two-page Class 12 marksheet therefore costs Rs 140 in official charges, last checked on 26 October 2026.

Start the apostille before your offer letter arrives

MEA asks applicants to apply well in advance, because every document is verified before it is stamped. Five two-page certificates cost about Rs 700 in official charges, so collect originals and begin state authentication as soon as Class 12 results are out.
