History

Introduction

UCMS, New Delhi

University College of Medical Sciences, or UCMS, is one of those colleges serious NEET aspirants usually keep on their shortlist for very practical reasons. It is a government medical college under the University of Delhi, and it gives students the advantage of training in a large, active Delhi hospital rather than a quieter peripheral setup. That matters because MBBS here is not just about classroom reputation. It is about what kind of patient load, emergency exposure, and day-to-day clinical learning environment you are going to get.

  • MBBS Entrance Exam:NEET-UG
  • MBBS FeesApprox ₹45,000–₹70,000
  • Eligibility Criteria:10+2 + NEET-UG
  • MBBS Seats170

Established in 1971, UCMS is a constituent college of the University of Delhi and offers around 170 MBBS seats. For many aspirants, its biggest strength is the clinical training environment, since students learn at GTB Hospital, a busy government teaching hospital in Delhi.

Academic Excellence

Why Is UCMS Considered One of the Best in India?

UCMS pairs the roughly 1,700-bed GTB Hospital with very high patient volumes, round-the-clock emergency exposure, the academic credibility of the University of Delhi, and strong library support.

Large GTB Hospital Base

Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB) gives UCMS a very strong clinical base. It has grown from 350 beds at the time of establishment to around 1,700 beds, which makes it one of the largest government teaching hospitals attached to an MBBS college in Delhi.

Very High Patient Load

The daily patient load is one of UCMS's biggest strengths. GTB handles around 6,000 OPD patients a day, around 250 admissions a day, and bed occupancy of about 104%. For MBBS students, that usually means stronger day-to-day clinical exposure and a wider range of cases.

Strong Emergency Exposure

Emergency exposure is another major advantage here. Since GTB runs round-the-clock emergency and trauma services, students train in a hospital environment where emergency medicine, surgery, orthopaedics, obstetrics, paediatrics, and critical care are part of the daily learning experience.

Part of the University of Delhi

UCMS also benefits from being part of the University of Delhi. Established in 1971 as a constituent college of DU, it carries the academic credibility of a major central university. That matters to students because the college is not functioning in isolation; it sits within a larger and well-recognised university system.

Nationally Recognised (NIRF)

UCMS remains nationally recognised in medical education too. In the NIRF 2025 Medical rankings, it was placed around 38th in India, which keeps it in the known and competitive government-college bracket.

Strong Academic Support

The academic support system is stronger than many students expect. UCMS has a central library along with around 21 departmental libraries, so the college offers more than just hospital exposure. It also has the academic depth expected from a serious University of Delhi medical college.

History

History Information

Founded by the University of Delhi (1971)

UCMS was established in 1971 by the University of Delhi as its constituent medical college, with the larger aim of promoting medical education under one of India's leading central universities.

Early Years & Interim Hospitals

It began at the Chemistry Block of Delhi University, and because a medical college needed a hospital-based clinical training system, students were initially attached to LLRM Hospital, Meerut, and later Safdarjung Hospital as an interim arrangement.

The Move to Dilshad Garden & GTB Hospital (1986)

The long-term plan was always to link UCMS with a major hospital in East Delhi, and that vision took full shape when the college shifted to Dilshad Garden in 1986 and became associated with GTB Hospital, strengthening its role in both medical training and tertiary healthcare delivery.

Education, Research & Service Today

Over time, UCMS has grown into an institution known for combining medical education, research, and public healthcare service. Its broader vision is to serve the community by developing capable and responsible Indian Medical Graduates, while its mission focuses on excellence in education, research, patient care, and allied health sciences. In practical terms, that means UCMS was not founded only to award medical degrees, but to build a strong teaching and research environment that also contributes meaningfully to affordable and quality healthcare for the community it serves.

Housing

UCMS Hostel Facilities

UCMS has an institution-managed hostel system, which is a major advantage for outstation students. The college is located in Dilshad Garden, Delhi 110095, so the hostel setup is linked to the main UCMS campus environment.

Four Residential Buildings

The official hostel system reflects four residential buildings: Girls Hostel, New Boys Hostel, Old Boys Hostel and JRD Hostel.

College-Managed Accommodation

This structured setup makes accommodation more organised and college-managed, rather than something students have to arrange on their own.

Hostel Administration

UCMS also appears to have a proper hostel administration process, with separate systems for hostel-related management and payments.

Online Payments

An online hostel payment or mess payment facility is available, which makes routine fee-related processes easier for students.

Library & 24-Hour Reading Rooms

UCMS also has a library facility within the campus ecosystem, and the library includes reading rooms that are kept open for 24 hours, which is especially useful for medical students.

Settling Into College Life

From a student point of view, hostel life at UCMS matters not just for accommodation, but also for daily routine, budgeting, study access, and settling into college life. Since hostel allotment, charges, and room-related rules can change, students should still check the latest official UCMS notices before making final assumptions.

Scholarship & Financial

Scholarship & Financial Aid

Although UCMS is already far more affordable than private medical colleges, students can still apply for financial support through University of Delhi schemes and wider government scholarship routes. Since UCMS is a constituent college of DU, students should keep track of both DU-level support and national scholarship portals.

  • University of Delhi Financial Support Scheme

One of the most relevant support routes for UCMS students is DU's Financial Support Scheme. For 2025-26, students with annual family income of up to ₹4 lakh can receive fee waiver support of up to 100% of the actual fee, subject to a maximum of ₹15,000. Students with family income between ₹4 lakh and ₹8 lakh can receive fee waiver support of up to 50% of the actual fee, subject to a maximum of ₹10,000.

  • University-Level Scholarship Routes

Delhi University also releases separate scholarship notices for students through its Opportunities and Scholarships section. These include university scholarship routes and related application windows that students should track during the academic year.

  • Government Scholarship Routes

Eligible students can also apply through the National Scholarship Portal, where One Time Registration, or OTR, is required before applying. Depending on domicile, category, and eligibility, students may also find relevant Delhi government scholarship routes through e-District-linked schemes for SC, ST, OBC, and Minority students.

Application Process

Track DU Scholarship Updates

For institutional support, students should track the University of Delhi scholarships updates and the DU Financial Support Scheme notices.

Apply via NSP (with OTR)

For government-funded scholarships, students usually need to apply through the National Scholarship Portal, and the portal currently requires One Time Registration (OTR).

Delhi Welfare / e-District Routes

Students applying under Delhi government welfare-linked categories should also keep an eye on the relevant Delhi welfare or e-district routes where applicable.
