History

Introduction

TRIHMS Naharlagun

The Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun is the first and only government medical college in Arunachal Pradesh, and it gave the state the ability to train its own doctors for the first time. Established in 2018 by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and named after Tomo Riba, the state's second Chief Minister, TRIHMS is located at Naharlagun in Papum Pare district, in the twin-city region with the state capital Itanagar. The institute is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It admits 100 MBBS students each year through its roughly 500-bed teaching hospital, having doubled its intake from 50 seats in 2024. In June 2026 the NMC also permitted TRIHMS to start postgraduate MD and MS courses, a major step for medical education in the North-East.

Recognition & Prestige

Rankings

TRIHMS is a young, single-college institution, so the most meaningful 'ranking' is its standing within Arunachal Pradesh, alongside its scale:

  • #1

Only government medical college in Arunachal Pradesh

TRIHMS does not yet feature in the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) national Medical rankings, and no verifiable IIRF rank number has been published for it. This is expected for a college that only admitted its first MBBS batch in 2018. As the first and only government medical college in Arunachal Pradesh, it is effectively #1 in the state by default, which is how the ranking tile is framed. The teaching-hospital bed count is shown as ~500 per multiple public sources — confirm the current bed strength and any state-level ranking before publishing.

Academic Excellence

Why Choose TRIHMS, Naharlagun, for MBBS

TRIHMS is the institution that ended Arunachal Pradesh's dependence on other states to train its doctors. You choose it because it is the state's only government medical college, it is NMC-recognised and Rajiv Gandhi University-affiliated, its fees are among the lowest in India, and it is growing fast, having doubled its seats and just added postgraduate courses.

Arunachal Pradesh's First and Only Government Medical College

TRIHMS is the first and only government medical college in Arunachal Pradesh. For a student from the state, it is the single local route to an MBBS without leaving the North-East; for the state, every doctor it trains is one fewer that has to be recruited from outside.

NMC-Recognised and Rajiv Gandhi University-Affiliated

TRIHMS is recognised by the National Medical Commission and awards an MBBS degree affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar. The degree is valid for registration, for NEET-PG, and for the NExT examination, exactly like any other Indian government medical college.

A Growing Institution: 50 to 100 Seats, and Now PG

TRIHMS doubled its MBBS intake from 50 to 100 seats with NMC approval in 2024, and in June 2026 was permitted to start postgraduate MD and MS courses across 11 subjects with 23 seats. A student joining now enters an institution that is expanding its faculty, departments and specialist training year on year.

A 500-Bed Teaching Hospital for the Whole State

Clinical training takes place at the roughly 500-bed TRIHMS teaching hospital, which functions as a major referral centre for Arunachal Pradesh, with an emergency and trauma centre, diagnostic laboratories and specialist services including radiotherapy. Students see a wide case load drawn from across the state.

Among the Lowest MBBS Fees in India

TRIHMS is a state government college and one of the most affordable in the country, with annual fees reported in the region of ₹20,000 to ₹57,000 depending on the source. The full course costs a small fraction of a single year at a private or deemed medical college.

Training for the Health Needs of the North-East

Arunachal Pradesh is a large, mountainous, sparsely populated state where healthcare reaches remote communities. Training here gives students real exposure to community medicine, public health and the logistics of frontier healthcare, which is strong preparation for postgraduate work in those fields.

The cohort is small, so teaching is personal and you get real hands-on exposure. The hospital has good facilities, even radiotherapy, which you do not expect in a young college.
