TRIHMS Naharlagun
The Tomo Riba Institute of Health & Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun is the first and only government medical college in Arunachal Pradesh, and it gave the state the ability to train its own doctors for the first time. Established in 2018 by the Government of Arunachal Pradesh and named after Tomo Riba, the state's second Chief Minister, TRIHMS is located at Naharlagun in Papum Pare district, in the twin-city region with the state capital Itanagar. The institute is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar, and recognised by the National Medical Commission (NMC). It admits 100 MBBS students each year through its roughly 500-bed teaching hospital, having doubled its intake from 50 seats in 2024. In June 2026 the NMC also permitted TRIHMS to start postgraduate MD and MS courses, a major step for medical education in the North-East.

How to Apply
Admission Process for MBBS
Admission to MBBS at TRIHMS is entirely through NEET-UG merit. Of the 100 seats, 15% fall under the All India Quota, allotted through the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) of the DGHS, Government of India, and 85% fall under the Arunachal Pradesh state quota, counselled by the state Directorate of Health Services / APDHTE. The state quota is heavily protective of local students, with 85% of the state-quota seats reserved for Arunachal Pradesh Scheduled Tribe (APST) candidates. There is no private or NRI quota. Candidates must meet domicile and category requirements for the state seats.

The student must have passed Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology and English as compulsory subjects, from a recognised board.

Career Pathways After MBBS at TRIHMS, Naharlagun
Graduates are eligible for NEET-PG to pursue MD, MS and diploma programmes across India, and TRIHMS now offers its own PG seats in 11 subjects, so a small but growing number can specialise in Arunachal Pradesh itself.
After the compulsory rotating internship, TRIHMS graduates register with the NMC or their State Medical Council to practise. They can then specialise through NEET PG (MD, MS or DNB) and go on to DM or MCh super-specialty training through NEET SS.
The Arunachal Pradesh Health Service, the National Health Mission and other North-Eastern state health services recruit medical officers; TRIHMS graduates are especially valued for their understanding of frontier and tribal healthcare. Note that state-funded seats may carry a service obligation.

Post-Matric Scholarship (SC/ST/OBC), Government of India
The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (SC/OBC) and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (ST) fund Post-Matric Scholarships for professional courses including MBBS, covering tuition and a maintenance allowance, applied for through the National Scholarship Portal (scholarships.gov.in).
