History
Introduction
Surat Municipal Institute of Medical Education and Research (SMIMER) is a municipal medical college owned and run by the Surat Municipal Corporation — one of very few fully municipal-run medical colleges in India — in Surat, Gujarat. Established in 1999, it is approved by the National Medical Commission (NMC) and affiliated to Veer Narmad South Gujarat University, Surat, and admits 250 MBBS students a year on NEET-UG merit through the 15% All India Quota (MCC) and the 85% Gujarat state quota (ACPC Gujarat). It also runs postgraduate (MD/MS) programmes. Clinical training runs at the attached SMIMER Hospital.
SMIMER's state-quota tuition is around ₹8.5 lakh per year — higher than Gujarat's state government colleges — with management-quota seats at a higher fee; hostel, mess and deposits are extra. Clinical training runs at the attached SMIMER Hospital, a multi-specialty teaching hospital that serves Surat and south Gujarat, giving MBBS students high-volume exposure across specialties. Its municipal-government ownership, NMC recognition and NEET-UG admission make it a well-established option for an MBBS seat in Surat.
