History

Introduction

Osmania Medical College, Hyderabad

Osmania Medical College is one of India's oldest and most regarded government medical institutes. It has a long history in medical education and is still a well-known name in the field. It was created in 1919, but its roots go back to the Hyderabad Medical School, which was founded in 1846. It was ranked #48 in the NIRF 2025 medical rankings, which shows how well it does on a national basis. The college has about 250 MBBS seats and is part of one of the largest government medical education networks in Telangana.

  • MBBS Entrance Exam:NEET-UG
  • MBBS FeesApprox ₹1.5 lakh to ₹1.6 lakh for the full course
  • Eligibility Criteria:10+2 + NEET-UG
  • MBBS SeatsApprox. 250

One of Osmania's best features is the large amount of clinical exposure that MBBS students get. The college is connected to about 10 hospitals, which together have more than 6,000 beds and see more than 1,500 patients every day. This means that students learn in a hectic, real-world clinical setting from a young age. This kind of experience over the course of the program helps students become more confident in their clinical skills, understand how hospitals run better, and learn more meaningfully in a variety of departments and with a variety of patients. Osmania is a great place for students who want to attend to a government medical institution in Hyderabad where they can learn in the classroom and in the hospital at the same time.

Academic Excellence

Why Is Osmania Medical College a Strong MBBS Option?

Osmania pairs a long medical legacy with broad clinical training across a ten-hospital network, a wide case mix, a strong postgraduate environment, and active public-health and lab work.

A Long Legacy

The Hyderabad Medical School, which opened in 1846, is where Osmania Medical College got its start in 1919. That legacy makes it part of one of the longest medical school traditions in the country, and it has been a part of Hyderabad's academic and clinical scene for a long time.

Broad Clinical Training

The college's clinical training environment is its best feature since it is so broad and varied. Students train in a bustling government medical system where they see patients every day. The system has more than 6,000 beds, over 1,500 outpatient visits a day, and about 250 MBBS admissions a year. That usually means better bedside training, busier departments, and more consistent clinical experience every day.

A Ten-Hospital Network

Osmania is connected to about ten hospitals, such as Osmania General Hospital, Niloufer Hospital, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Government ENT Hospital, the Institute of Mental Health, TB and Chest Hospital, MNJ Cancer Hospital, and the Sir Ronald Ross Institute. This allows MBBS students access to a much larger clinical basis instead of just one facility for training.

A Wide Range of Cases

That bigger network of hospitals also implies more cases to see. Students can witness a wide range of patients in general medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, ENT, psychiatry, chest medicine, oncology, maternity care, and infectious diseases. This helps you get a better overall knowledge of clinical work throughout time.

Strong Postgraduate Environment

Osmania also has a great environment for graduate students. According to its NIRF 2025 filing, it has about 250 MBBS seats and more than 400 postgraduate admissions in a wide range of fields. It also has 1,168 students in MD, MS, and DNB programs. This makes the academic setting more lively, with busy teaching units, better case-based discussions, and regular exposure to a medical training environment at different levels.

Public-Health & Lab Work

The college's work in public health and labs also helps to improve the academic environment. The Telangana State Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Network's main office is in its Department of Microbiology. That teaches students that the school they are attending is not only educating in the classroom and taking care of patients in the hospital, but also keeping an eye on things and doing public health work.

Infrastructure

Instead of having one hospital, Osmania Medical College has a broad teaching network. Ten hospitals are connected to the college. They are Osmania General Hospital, Niloufer Hospital for Women and Children, Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital, Government ENT Hospital, Institute of Mental Health, TB and Chest Hospital, Government Maternity Hospital, Modern Government Maternity Hospital, MNJ Institute of Oncology, and the Sir Ronald Ross Institute of Tropical and Communicable Diseases.

One of Osmania's best features is the clinical scale. The college says in its NIRF 2025 medical submission that the average number of people who came to the OPD in 2023 was 10,800, and that the average number of hospital beds was 6,052. That kind of clinical background usually means that MBBS students see more cases and have a busier hospital learning environment.

History

History Information

Roots in the Hyderabad Medical School (1846)

The story of Osmania Medical College begins well before the present-day college name. Its roots go back to the Hyderabad Medical School, which started in 1846.

Teaching in Urdu, the Hakeem Qualification

In its early years, teaching happened in Urdu, and the qualification awarded was Hakeem.

Becoming Osmania Medical College (1919–1920)

After Osmania University was established in 1919, the medical college took shape in the following year, and that earlier medical tradition gradually evolved into what students know today as Osmania Medical College.

A Large Government College Today

That long institutional history still matters when students look at Osmania today. This is not a newer college still building its academic identity. It has grown inside Hyderabad's public medical system over decades and now stands as a large government medical college with 250 MBBS seats, 1,168 students in MD/MS/DNB programmes, and a #48 rank in the NIRF 2025 Medical category.

Scholarship & Financial

Scholarship & Financial Aid

Although Osmania Medical College is far more affordable than most private medical colleges, scholarship support still matters for many students. At Osmania, the clearest publicly visible support within the college itself comes through the alumni network. Take a look below:

  • Alumni-Linked Student Support

The Osmania Medical College alumni association offers scholarship support for 4 economically underprivileged MBBS students. That is not a large scholarship ecosystem on paper, but it is still a concrete support route visible from the college side.

  • Merit Recognition

The same alumni-backed system also supports 29 gold medals for toppers across UG, PG, and super-speciality courses. This is not a fee scholarship in the usual sense, but it does show that academic recognition and merit-based encouragement are part of the student ecosystem.

  • Telangana Government Scholarship Routes

For many students, the more important scholarship route is the Telangana ePASS system rather than a college-only fund. The official portal runs post-matric scholarship services and currently provides fresh and renewal routes for categories including SC, ST, BC, EBC, Disabled Welfare, and Minority students. The portal also lets students check application status, print acknowledgements, and upload pending documents.

Application Process

Apply via Telangana ePASS

Students who want government-funded scholarship support usually need to go through the Telangana ePASS portal rather than a separate Osmania Medical College scholarship page. The portal handles fresh registration, renewal registration, application-status tracking, and document uploads for post-matric schemes.

Keep ePASS Prerequisites Ready

For fresh applications, the current ePASS prerequisites ask for details such as the SSC hall ticket information and the student's Aadhaar number. For some categories such as SC fresh applicants, the name in Aadhaar and SSC records must match, and biometric authentication at Mee Seva may form part of the process.

Track College Notices for Alumni Support

For college-linked support such as the alumni-backed MBBS scholarships, Osmania does not appear to publish a detailed public application workflow, so it makes sense to track college notices and stay in touch with the relevant student or administrative channels when such support opens up.
