IGGMC Nagpur

Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, Nagpur, was started in 1967 and is operated by the Government of Maharashtra. The legacy of the site dates back to Mayo Hospital, one of the oldest and most historically significant hospitals in Central India, and it is one of the two government-run medical colleges in Nagpur, ranking among the top ten government medical colleges in Maharashtra. It is recognised by the National Medical Commission and affiliated with the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The institute includes a Nursing College, a Medical College, a teaching hospital, and the Dr. Ambedkar Hospital and Research Center, offering undergraduate, postgraduate (about 21 disciplines), nursing, diploma and BSc PMT programs.

Mayo Hospital — 15 OPD Chambers

IGGMC & Hospital, popularly known as Mayo Hospital, is the teaching hospital, with about 15 OPD chambers across specialties (orthopaedics, paediatrics, surgery, medicine, immunisation and others) and approximately 723 teaching beds.

Special OPDs & High Footfall

Special OPDs run for epilepsy, diabetes, geriatric medicine and allergy. OPD patient inflow is about 1,600–1,800 a day and IPD inflow about 90–120 daily — giving students broad clinical exposure.

Dedicated Casualty Block

A separate casualty block (~750 sq ft, about 20 beds) offers resuscitation kits, ECG machines, defibrillators, ventilators and surgical instruments, with a patient inflow of approximately 300 daily.

High-Volume Surgery Department

The surgery department is noted as one of the most active and high-volume departments in Maharashtra (about 5 units), giving students wide clinical exposure to mixed medical cases.

Research Opportunities

Students get research exposure — one MBBS student was selected for the international IFMSA Research Exchange Program 2026–2027, a student won best paper at VENTCON 2026, and workshops cover cochlear implants and basic & advanced life support.

How to Apply

Admission Process for MBBS

Admission to MBBS at IGGMC is through NEET-UG followed by counselling — All India Quota via MCC and Maharashtra State quota via the state CET Cell. Students fill and lock college preferences; seats are allotted on NEET rank, availability and reservation norms. Allotted students report for document verification (Scrutiny Officer verifies originals; the Nodal Officer confirms admission), deposit fees by DD plus ₹2,900 in cash, and submit the receipt to receive the admission letter.

Infrastructure

The IGGMC campus houses the hospital with about 15 OPD chambers and ~723 teaching beds, a ~750 sq ft casualty block (~20 beds), an IPD building for surgical cases (with lecture halls, laboratories and surgical instruments), and separate departmental buildings for radiology, medicine, ENT and gynaecology. The main college building has the dean's office and a multipurpose first-year block — dissection hall on the ground floor, anatomy on the first, central library on the second, biochemistry on the third, and lecture halls, biology lab and anatomy research lab on the fourth. The campus also has an ATM, a nursing college block and a canteen; there is no separate sports ground, so students use the space between the girls' and boys' hostels.
